We had booked cottage Sol for 10 days. The cottage was pleasant and the beds, shower and facilities were quite okay. The terrace at the cottage had a fantastic view and there is nothing that can beat having a cup of coffee and staring to the ocean when you wake up. It is very nice to eat on the terrace and we often had dinner there in the evening and were able to use the BBQ. The pool at Calhau Grande was very beautiful. Everything is super well cared for and you see that a lot of love and care is put into the cottages, the garden and the swimming pool. The pool is clean, the sun loungers are very comfortable and the view on the ocean s magnificent. Sofia and her family are very friendly people who take a lot of time for you, give you good tips and they were very hospitable. During our stay the cottage was cleaned a few times by the cleaning lady was very pleasant. If you go to Calhau Grande you definitely need a car and it might be handy to have some experience with driving uphill. And please note that it takes some steps uphill to walk from the parking to the cottage. But the tranquility, the beautiful views and the privacy are more than worth it. All in all, we had a fantastic time at Calhau Grande and hope to come back someday.…
I can't rate our stay highly enough! This is not for people looking for a typical resort type holiday, or for anyone with an aversion to steps (Although I promise the views are worth it!). This is for people who want to be able to do things in there own time, and to enjoy the island for what it really is. Stunning! The rural location is a challenge if you're not a confident driver (make sure you follow Sofia's map. DO NOT TAKE THE ROAD BEHIND THE COTTAGES) but we got the hang of it pretty quickly. The moment we turned up, Sofia was able to calm our nerves after the drive, and was so welcoming. She showed us around the herb garden, and told us what makes the best teas. There's also a little honesty box area where the locals bring up fruit and veg for you. We had some corn, sweet potatoes and bananas, but they had all sorts. The pool was extremely quite during the day, and we often had it to ourselves. The view from our room (and I think from all of them) was beautiful. I could have sat out on our terrace all day watching the busy bees on the roses, and looking out to the vastness of the sea. When you go out of the town to the busy tourist areas you really appreciate the uniqueness of what they have created here. It's so relaxed and welcoming, and one of the best holidays we have had in a long time. I was very sad to leave it behind, but we are sure to go back. …
We spent 4 days in Calhau Grande, from the warm welcome to the end of our stay it was a four-star experience! The location is perfect for discovering the west cost, the quality of the accommodation exceptional and the view on the ocean, during breakfast and dinner: amazing ;)! By walking 20min distance you can find a nice supermarket with fresh vegetables and fruits, delicious traditional bread..very convenient!
We booked the Calhau Grande Cottage for one week and were extremely pleased with it. The cottages have lots of character and are nestled in the hills near Arco de Calheta, where they provide a good base to explore the western side of the island. Our cottage was very comfortable with two bathrooms (one upstairs and one next to the living room) and a well equipped kitchen. The owner Sofia has clearly paid much attention to every detail. The garden gives a great view over the ocean and there's even a nice outdoor kitchen! All in all, very much recommended!
Calhau Grande is very well located, in a part of the island where the weather is sunny. The ocean view is just amazing. This place is very quite, clean, charming and maintained. Rooms are fully renovated and equipped with all you need in holidays. The pool is perfect. I don't want to forget Sofia and her mum for their hospitality and kindness :-)
