We spent 4 nights at Villa Sumrak, which was the last stop on our 2 week trip to Croatia. We truly saved the best for last. Let’s start with the usual stuff: - Room: quiet, spotless, comfortable, spacious. We had a sitting area and small kitchen in our room as well, but we didn’t make as much use of those spaces because we were too busy enjoying the outdoor patio space and the excellent cooking of our hosts! - Meals: For a little bit extra you can have breakfast every morning and dinner every evening. The breakfast is more than plenty to fill you until dinner time, and dinner is fantastic as well. We had a 3-course meal every night and were not disappointed. Miro (the father) is very knowledgeable about wine, and had a little something for everybody, even someone (like me!) who claims not to like wine. - Location: Villa Sumrak is in a quiet location near the northwest part of Plitvice National Park. Google maps didn’t have a problem finding the place, and if we could find it in the dark, I’m guessing most could also find it with ease. Because you are on the northwest side of the park, you are usually able to see the falls in the opposite order as many other visitors, minimizing crowds and lines. If you aren’t sure what to do in the park, (or with your day in general) Marko (the eldest son) is more than happy to help you plan during or after breakfast. What makes Villa Sumrak the best spot to stay, however, is truly the family themselves. They are always working to make sure you enjoy your stay. For example, we made a miscalculation on travel time and ended up arriving quite late. We didn’t realize we had the wrong number to call them and let them know until we parked in their parking area. Come to find out, Marko had been also been attempting to contact us to make sure we were okay and weren’t lost or broken down on the road somewhere. While we were fine, I honestly think that if we WERE broken down, Marko and his brother would have come and helped us. The whole family sets such a high standard of service to their guests, it is rare to see any of them even sit down. My husband and I love to travel because we love to discover new places, have new experiences, and make new friends. I feel like we achieved all of these things while staying with the Sumrak family. After this awful pandemic, it was so wonderful to sit and share a bottle of wine (or two) with such pleasant company. I strongly urge you to not only stay at Villa Sumrak during your visit to Plitvice Lakes, but to stay with them an extra day or two, take some time to relax, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and the peace and quiet. You will be glad you did.

We spent two nights at Villa Sumrak when we visited Plitvice Lakes last week, and really enjoyed our stay. We had a huge apartment that was very quiet, wonderful natural light and comfortable beds and furniture. It also had air conditioning, but was cool enough that we did not need it. The location was great for visiting the parks, about a ten minute walk to the boat that took you to the upper lakes. A couple minute drive to parking if you did not want to drive. We took both breakfast and dinner during our visit, and Marko and his siblings did a wonderful job preparing meals. Grilled steak one night and mixed grill the second night, along with salad and dessert. They do have vegetarian offerings as well. Nice selection of local beer and wine that you could do by the glass of the bottle. Breakfast was a mix of breads, meat and fruit, and they prepared eggs however you wanted them as well. It was so nice not having to drive into town for meals, as we could grab sandwiches and snacks in the park during the day. Overall a great stay, and we will return to the property if we ever get a chance to go back to the lakes.

Don’t consider staying anywhere else in the Plitvička lakes. You will be welcomed here by Miro and Marina and feel at home immediately. We had the studio room for our family of four - huge room, bathroom, kitchenette, sofa, dining area. Very clean and airy. The lakes are a 10-15 min walk away - unreal scenery - and there is a hidden entrance to get you right there. The main driving entrances are a 10 min drive away. We had a delicious dinner - home cooked and grown. My vegetarian daughter had her favourite meal of the trip - mushroom risotto - prepared especially for her. Breakfast was delicious too. I wish we could have stayed another couple of nights, we will definitely be back.

If you are reading this you are probably considering a visit to Plitvice lakes. I have 2 recommendations (1) stop considering and decide to visit, and (2) decide to stay at villa sumrak. Plitvice lakes are quite simply magnificent, and quite intimate, you can get up close and personal. The issue is how to do this when up to 12,000 others wish to do the same. As we drove to Villa Sumrak we passed entrance gate 1 and then 2, on we drove. Villa Sumrak had our entrance tickets, we were going to have to come back. NO! At Villa Sumrak you can enter at gate 3, with a handful of others. You can get great views of the largest waterfall and also of the lower lakes. And by timing things you can miss the worst of the crowds. And also you can stay at a lovely B&B, with spacious comfortable rooms, great shower, good evening meal and lovely hosts. Recommended!!

Vila Sumrak is a very cozy and neat little house in the Plitvige National Park area. Location is quiet and beautiful, the room was tidy, clean and comforting. Moreover, the owner Mr Miro is welcoming and comforting. He will give you all kind of needed information and advice. Although Vila Sumrak doesn’t have a restaurant, the family does cook dinner and you can join it, provided you inform them by the morning so they can get the food at the market for you too. We felt very relaxed here. However, there were two black marks I’d like to point out: the day we fully spent there, there had been a serious emergency, as one of the houses nearby took fire and burnt completely. The consequence was the fire brigade shut the electricity down in all the village, and the water is delivered to the rooms by an electric pump, so both electricity and water were missing. I believe it would have been professional to makes us find a bucket of water upon return to the house, instead of expecting us to ask for it. After all, it’s unpleasant to be without electricity, but it’s impossible to be without water. Secondly, we discovered the rooms aren’t cleaned and tidied at all daily, unless you explicitly ask for it. This is not specified anywhere, and when we questioned this, we were told we should have put a ‘please clean our room’ card outside of it: unfortunately, no such card was in the room for us to use, so why should we have thought about it? Considering this place is 4-starred, and we spent almost 150 Euros per night (breakfast is NOT included), I don’t feel ashamed in stating that the price spent is not adequate to the service received.

This is one of the most genuine family hotels we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. The whole family were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Within 5 minutes of arriving, we literally felt our whole selves relax. Whether this was due to the amazingly beautiful landscape or the genuine calm, friendly manner of the two brothers who greeted us (my daughter and I both felt that this family are gifted with ASMR triggering voices) - who knows! We sat outside on arrival in a beautiful garden with ‘welcome drinks’ and were talked through a map of the area (and given a copy) and things to look forward to. If you don’t have park tickets then the family offer to buy them for you when they go early in the morning to buy for the next day. If you do (and I would advise prebooking) then they will explain how best to enter and navigate the parks ?one day or two); we only had one day and their advised route enables us to experience everything. Absolute unexpected bonuses were the directions to river swimming (10 mins by car) and some truly amazing viewpoints over the falls (15 min walk). Both are fully recommended by us, swimming in the river was such a unique experience, the colour of the water and the feel of your skin when you get out were just lovely. Our room was beautiful (deluxe double with extra bed for our 12 year old). The attention to detail was just lovely. The beds were comfortable and the shower was huge. Bottles of toiletries were provided as well as plentiful towels and extras including sanitary protection and cotton wool. The room had air conditioning, TV, fridge, hairdryer, safe, desk, chairs, a suitcase stand and wardrobe. Even a small stool to enable young children to reach the sink and a stool if needed to use the shower were provided. Rugs and soft furnishings alongside beautiful photographs made the room feel very special. Parking was very close to our room and easy to find. Food - breakfast was lovely and a range of foods were available (extra fee payable) including juice, fresh coffee, a range of teas, cereals, bread, meat, cheese, cookies, eggs, sausage, fruit and so on. It’s served buffet style from 8am. Each evening the family cook dinner (be sure to request it the evening before), there is no menu but you can ask what will be served each day. The spit roasted lamb with bread, salad and potatoes was delicious. Desert is homemade and tasty (with a good natured family rivalry of whose is the favourite). Juices, local wines and beer are also sold and were all deliciously chilled. There is a local restaurant (5 mins by car) with a full menu if you prefer though personally, I would eat at Villa Sumrak. Negatives?? I’m truly picking hairs here: our towels weren’t changed / bins weren’t emptied after our first night (better for the environment and we didn’t really mind); I got bitten quite a few times during our evening meal (note to self - bring repellant) and we weren’t quite sure where to go when we arrived (down the steps and around the back). Overall, would we go back? Absolutely. Would we recommend to our closest friends / family? Definitely. A lovely family who are happy to chat, give guidance or leave you alone (whichever you prefer). This was a truly special, special place to stay where we felt like we mattered. Precious memories made.

the rooms are perfectly clean and newly renovated. we had a delicious barbecue in the evening where marko (the host) explained the national park and the best way to get around to see the nicest spots and how to avoid the crowds in the park. he also organized the tickets for us. it is only a 15 minutes walk to one of the entries to to the national park (entrance P3). we wished we could have stayed longer at villa sumrak! hope to see u soon!

This is a beautiful family run villa located on the more quieter, scenic and accessible part of Plitvice lakes. We had a warm welcome and was made to feel comfortable from the first moment we arrived. The tasty dinner was homemade using the traditional BBQ grill. The rooms were spacious and clean. Access to the lakes was a kilometer away and within walking distance. The closest entrance to the lakes was the quieter of the three so gaining access to the boat was much easier. We would definitely recommend Villa Sumrak as a place to stay in the lakes.
