I have had the honor of staying at the San Mauro estate twice now - once as a romantic retreat with my husband some years ago (when we decided we HAD to return some day), and second time most recently (Sept 2019), with our two children and extended family. It is worth noting that this is a big trip for us from the U.S. and worth it. It is a very intimate experience with beautiful views, a historic church on site, personal service from the Sinkovic family, incredible small-batch wines, and an on-site restaurant serving homemade Istrian food. The rooms are not luxury (ex: no A/C or laundry), but are very clean and includes small kitchenettes if you want to bring some basic foods with you. The stay is comfortable and affordable, and includes a lovely breakfast in the morning in their restaurant or balcony. They even provided us an in-room breakfast take-away option when we had to leave incredibly early on our last day. Regarding children: though the hotel does not offer "kids activities," we brought our 5 and 7 year-olds and they were easily entertained by the truffle pigs and exploring the beautiful grounds on-site, and by taking day trips to nearby villages in the area. Lastly, we asked for support with the Sinkovic family (Sergej and his brother are fantastic and both speak English, Croatian, Italian, and German) to organize some activities for our group and they really outdid themselves, with very little direction from us. They coordinated multiple wine tastings and meals at nearby villages and wineries, bikes for cycling through the wine country, and hosted a ceremony and party for our group with gorgeous flowers, appetizers, drinks, and a 6-course meal following the ceremony. Flowing wine, incredible conversations, and food that will not be forgotten. Tip: I encourage you to reach out to Sergej or the family to customize your experience. We consider them friends - they are that inviting. Enjoy! Now to get their wine imported to us...…
We were invited here as part of our close friends' 10th anniversary celebration. The owners were incredibly hospitable and the food was plentiful and delicious. The owner's wine is excellent as well. This property is in a tiny village that sits in Croatia's wine country. It feels a lot like Chianti in Italy or Sonoma Valley in California. The rooms are comfortable and breezy, with nice balconies with views over the surrounding country side. Several large hogs live outside (they are used to find the truffles), they amuse the kids and provide good photo subjects.
My wife and I stayed here, quite unexpectedly, ten years ago on our honeymoon and decided then to return here for our 10-year anniversary. As part of a six-month trip around the world, picking this place to return to says a lot, We returned to San Mauro looking forward to sharing this experience with our family and friends, as we turned this anniversary trip into a family trip (kids, grandma, siblings) and destination event (friends from near and far). We had a ton of hopes/expectations for the four days we stayed with the Sinkovic family farm/San Mauro Agroturizam. It was an experience way beyond what we hoped for. From planning the logistics with Sergej, to all the events we did during our stay, to the amazing ceremony we did at the church nearby, to the unbelievable dinner the last night, the Sinkovic family went far above and beyond our expectations and treated us like family. The long conversations late into the night with Sergej only accentuated our love and appreciation for all the Sinkovic's did for us to make this an incredibly special experience. The accommodations are modest, and comfortable, so those expecting 4-5 star, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a special place, with views of the surrounding wine country, in a place in the world that has not yet been impacted by the tourist masses, there is probably few places on earth like San Mauro. It is highly recommended and very worth the effort it will take to get there. Our family has made San Mauro one of our most treasured destinations.…
Location suits us & is very nice area. It is not a hotel. We had a very comfortable double bed with our own bathroom & kitchenette. Would want to cook there but the rest was comfortable. The owners friendly & helpful and they make very nice wine. The last time I was there was Dec 2017. We will stay there again. Fab views from the windows and a snoring pet pig below :)
I can't put a review about the food because i didn't get the chance to taste it,as i weren't feeling welcome. At first we were ignored as we waited to be seated by the waiter, and when finally the waither noticed us he sent is to find our own seat(i don't mind that). When we were ready to order the waiter told us that he wasn't sure that the kitchen will be able to push our food out. Although the restaurant had only 3 tables with people. We left as we didn't feel welcome and won't recomend this restaurant to anyone.
It's special, where else are you greeted by a pig at the front living in a wine barrel !? So what you get when you stay here is a good room (not the most fancy but good), tremendous atmosphere with a beautiful location and views from the balcony, great cuisine sourced locally, great wine made by the owner a professional oenologist, and warm and welcoming hosts. A true agroturismo place. Don't forget the local truffles too. Its in a quiet rural area in an elevated position and very popular with local people who come for meals and drinks - surely a good sign.
Great local wine, cheese, olive oil. Try the wine degustation, barrique malvazija, Terran, muskat, and palinka rakija. The Sinkovic family welcomes you with great hospitality. We stayed at the terrace for the whole afternoon / evening, with great view on the gulf of Trieste.
Small agrotourism with domestic istrian cuisine... specially dishes with truffle. After several years quality is the same. Nice view during summer days. Friendly stuff. Products are available for purchase.
We´ve spent unfortunately only 1 night at Sinković family place.. Yes, the rooms are not "fancy", but the food, wine and family members pay it back! We were so satisfied, that we are in every way comming back.. Don´t be touchy about the rooms, and just enjoy the nature and what Sinković family offers... Lucie and Patrik - CZ
Had a very nice stay in San Mauro. Food and wine (in particular the home produced muscat) was great and very well priced. Very kind hosts who made a great effort to speak English with us. Location is beautiful on the edge of many fantastic wineries. Cycling is a big activity in the area and hosts didn't have much information on wine tours and other activities so you had to find out for yourself. Room wasn't great (we stayed in apartment). It was clean but aged feeling about it and wasn't aired very well. Shower leaked and bed quite hard. Also no air conditioning or fan and very warm at night even in June. Not a farm per say. More an old house that produces wine and great food, with two pet pigs. Okay for the price.
