We stayed here for our final night of our Jules Verne Garden of Eden tour. The hotel is located an hour's drive from the main road and is along a very bumpy road. The gardens surrounding the ecolodge are beautiful with lots of herons and other birds to watch from the viewing deck. Bedrooms are basic with mesh on windows, but no glass which helps to keep the rooms cool. The food is all home-made but no choice and there is only beer or wine to drink. Lots of noises from all the birds and monkeys during the evening and early morning, which is just what we expected. Coffee, tea and biscuits available all day.
This is a beautiful eco lodge and fairly remote. I loved the simple but delicious food, which mostly originates on site - everything freshly made. Being regularly welcomed with delicious freshly made juices was a pleasure. It's a wonderful place for seeing birds and the tour of its own farm was fascinating. I loved just sitting and watching the birds and the butterflies from the main lodge's seating area. The staff were lovely. There are some downsides - visiting in the very rainiest part of the rainy season meant that walking around the grounds involved a lot of mud. And the drive there, up narrow mountain roads, was simply terrifying - not just because of the steep drops, but because of the many landslides and places where the road had been almost washed away. And while the rooms were charming and clean with comfortable beds, they were also very dark despite the outside wall being almost entirely a window space. The lack of glass in these window spaces (there was insect netting) meant that I could hear all the conversation from the next room and the sitting area downstairs. …
I wasn’t very impressed. Service was poor The lodge is circular and mist rooms have a view. Not mine. Do not book room 6. There is no view. Just the rain forest trees a yard away from the window mesh. Dark and dreary all day ! Light so poor I couldn’t even see inside my suitcase without head torch on Steep curved open tread stairs and they seemed surprised when I asked for help to haul my suitcase up The area is beautiful But after very wet weather the paths impossible due to mud The lake dam had burst and workers were trying to dredge the mud and restore it. we visited after horrendous rains where lake dam had burst and lake was being rebuilt - by hand ! Roads horrendous. But I was impressed how quickly they were working to get roads repaired Food was very basic. It was ok. But just put in front of you. No asking ! Do you like that ? For example omlette. Just brought out. And the girl seemed surprised and very grumpy when only 2/6 of us actually liked omelettes ! I was one of them I asked to change to a room which wasn’t so dark and dreary. Our group of 6 seemed to be the only ones staying in the lodge. We used 4 rooms between us There were other rooms empty but they refused to move me ! I’ll post a picture of my. None existent view ! I couldn’t do the farm walks/ bird walks. Paths were too slippery. So felt very much stuck there Bird life is amazing. The noise at night incredible Weather was still very wet with storms We ordered a bottle of wine to share with our meal. But they hadn’t any more ! They did get a few more bottles delivered for the next evenings meal ! Coffee in a heated flask available all day which was nice and very nice cookies. I asked for milk and it took ten minutes to get milk from the fridge which was three yards away ! The lodge is beautiful Bathrooms great But sorry they need to address guests concerns more We were also asked in a very reluctant way. Do you want your rooms cleaning ? Dry towels ? Err yes. With the humidity towels are wet ! Bin needs emptying (no flush toilet paper so bin needs emptying yes!) Bathroom was lovely but again my view was just trees through the mesh. No glass I’m afraid I was glad to leave and left rather hungry Glad I had some cereal bars in my suitcase…
We had an incredible time during our stay! Maicol was the BEST host we could ask for - he was kind, attentive and very thorough. He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. When the rains altered our plans and we were nervous, Maicol took the time to talk us through everything - even staying late to draw us a map in case our directions were not clear. He followed up the day after we left to make sure we arrived to our next destination safely. We felt very well taken care of! The views are spectacular! It was an unforgettable experience wake up to that kind of beauty. The food was incredible - so fresh and very esthetically pleasing. We had the pleasure of doing a bird watching tour with Andrés. He was amazing! He was very thorough and followed up with a guide so we could remember what we had seen. He may have made a birdwatcher out of me! When our plans changed, he stepped in to take us on the Chocolate Factory tour. Incredible!!! We learned so much and the chocolate was delicious!! Our only regret was running out of time to buy some to take home. We are still talking about it! Staying at Macaw Lodge is an experience I will always remember. Thank you to all the staff who helped make it so special!…
Can highly recommend this Lodge👍 Superb surroundings- nestled in a private reserve, where you will experience amazing Cabinas, really good home cooked food (also for vegetarians), stunning nature, exquisite for bird watching. There are self guided trails into the rainforest and around the property, where they also grow cocoa and make their own - really tasteful - chocolate😋..the owners have worked years to replant the area with endemic trees and plants, and now the place is filled with life again. It’s a super wonderful place - absolute tranquil, a little piece of Paradise on earth, where people are extremely devoted to protect the nature and the wildlife🙏 Here you also find Yoga decks. Super friendly staff and a place you hesitate to leave again, as everything is perfect🙏
Macaw lodge went above and beyond for our stay!! After accepting our group last minute for a month intensive of all of us occupying this amazing space, they exceeded our every expectation. The staff was so happy to help, from building a platform for our highline, to building an amazing bamboo structure and so much more. The chocolate coffee bars were just such an intimate way to have really feel the energy of the land on the inside. The waterfalls, the yoga shala, everything was so scenic, it was so much better than anything I could dream of- it was real, rainbows, toucans, macaws and all.
Todo 1 mes en este maravilloso lugar. A complete month in this place changed my life, nature speaks loud here, this a great place to explore nature and explore your inner word supported by this safe magic land!!! Beber agua de manantial es una gran bendicion, la cascada increible!!! Im an artist and connecting with nature is a big part of my creative process, im grateful for the opportunity to learn so much in this place!! Gracias pablo por todo tu trabajo
I had a beautiful stay at the Macaw lodge during an immersive with a larger group. The grounds and water ponds were beautiful and the chocolate made on-site delicious. The owners are very lovely, but the best bit was taking a shower with toucans sitting in trees outside the window and Macaws flying around the property.
I was in Macaw Lodge for a month! The hospitality is amazing, every single member of the staff greets you with a big smile and they are always willing to help. You sleep awesome in their cabins and you fall sleep to the sound of nature. The place is magic, nature is everywhere. There is a waterfall 10 minutes from the main lodge, its an awesome place to reset tour mind. There are a lot of beautiful birds and animals. Their chocolate is amazing! Don Pablo took us on a tour and explained us how they grow cacao and how they do chocalte. Thank you so much this experience, I hope I can be back as soon as possible! Pura Vida!
Macaw Lodge is in a really stunning location with the cabins all spread out. The one we had was a bit of a trek away from the lodge but it had a great view as a result. The trails on site are good for a variety of birds and it's good to have a river close by. It was incredible hot while we were there - very muggy, so be aware. It was also very noisy at night bizarely (blame the cicades in the trees around us). I get the impression this would be a popular location for dedicated birders.
