We stayed just one night as part of a birding tour, mainly so we could do some river boat tours near the hotel. We found the hotel really attentive and going out of their way to make sure we were looked after. The grounds are nice, with a swimming pool which we used. It was very hot while we were there, and it was good to have an air conditioned room. The room was clean and spacious. We ate at the restaurant, and whilst the food was good the selection for vegetarians is limited and may be a problem getting variety is staying multiple days. Showers were good and WiFi worked perfectly. My only complaint is the in-room security box. The one in our room appeared to be broken, and I would not have used it anyway because the flimsy design could probably be broken with a decent sized screwdriver. Didn't concern us too much, but probably something the hotel should include in their upgrade list. Overall, an excellent hotel that we would recommend to anyone visiting the Cano Negro area in Costa Rica.

I’d bet this is currently the best place to stay in the town. The rooms are nice with comfortable beds, strong AC unit, and clean. The resort is very well maintained and the staff are incredibly friendly and kind. It was a highlight of our stay to be able to talk to the resort owner and several staff members where they shared their stories and taught us about the area. A hidden feature of this resort is actually its food. The chef there is beyond talented and impressed us with every meal. My significant other and I are big foodies (I used to work in fine dining and we’ve had several Michelin star meals), and this chef knows how to cook. This would be the lodge I’d recommend anyone stay at when visiting the area.

We spent two nights at the Natural Lodge in Cano Negro. The road to get there is a bit brutal but it was well worth it when we got there. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful. The pool was great. The rooms were basic but clean and comfortable, with air-conditioning. The restaurant was good and the staff at the lodge and the restaurant were great. The bird activity is fantastic and we saw two different types of monkeys right on the grounds of the hotel. The only thing I would recommend is that Wifi be made available in the rooms. We did the Cano Negro boat tour where we saw many many different birds. The guide (Jimmy) was super knowledgeable about the various birds and the surroundings. I highly recommend taking this tour.

Joseph, the manager, is amazing. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable. However, the mattresses are a bit hard and thin. If you want to take boat rides in the refuge, you are about 5 mins from the boat launch. A great place for birders. Great wildlife on site.

I was a bit surprised how small the Cano Negro community was, the Natural Lodge is the largest hotel in that area. I wasn't sure what to expect, but after a very minor issue with the first room we were offered, we had a good visit.
As others have mentioned, the rooms are very basic, but I've found that to be common in Costa Rica. Having said that, we were there to experience that part of Costa Rica, and the Lodge certainly provided us with a good place to stay. The room was clean, the beds fairly comfortable, the AC worked well and the grounds were well maintained. We saw a lot of birds and some Spider Monkey's playing in the trees right outside our room.
We ate several breakfasts at the Lodge while we were there, one day breakfast was a buffet and the other a la carte. I beleive the Lodge determines that by how many folks are staying in the Lodge. We also had dinner one evening, the food was good.
Overall, the service was very good, everyone was friendly and helpful. We thought Cano Negro was a wonderful place and hope to return for another visit. I'd have no hesitation about staying at the Lodge again.

I was at the lodge for five nights in May 2022. For three nights I was the only guest, the other two nights there was one couple. Nonetheless, the restaurant prepared tasty meals, including breakfast. Two good restaurants are within a 10 minute walk. The staff were helpful and very nice, muy amable. My room was basic but adequate, what I expected. The bed was comfortable and the a/c worked very well. There was plenty of hot water. Birding in the area is outstanding, and the lodge can arrange birding outings. I went on two birding tours, including one that went into the reserve. The reserve has many shorebirds and is an interesting wetland environment. The lodge is only a three hour van drive from Arenal.. It is not necessary to drive to Cano Negro. The lodge made my arrangements to travel by van to and from the lodge. If you are looking for Costa Rica wildlife and birding off the beaten path, in an interesting area of the country most tourists do not visit, you should certainly visit this lodge. pura vida

The beautiful hotel complex is ideally located near the boat dock for bird watching on the Rio Frigo. Numerous birds can be admired in the restaurant and monkeys can be seen climbing the tall trees in the garden. A beautiful pool, friendly staff and good food make the stay very pleasant.

We had a great time. I went there with my wife and my 5 years old daughter. The employes are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is good, rooms are clean, the pool is nice. We had a boat tour on the river, guide was very informative, he took the time to give us extra information for every bird we saw. I highly recommend visiting this hotel, specially if you are a bird lover.

Wow, what an amazing place. The lodge is so peaceful, in a magical setting. The rooms are simple, but comfortable. We enjoyed the pool and sitting in the restaurant/bar area looking at the bevy of birds. The restaurant is really good - no need to eat anywhere else - and the bar tender makes superb margaritas. The early morning boat tour with Jimmy is truly awesome!
