It is with some regret that I'm writing a review of this place, my first ever review in tripadvisor in fact, since this place sooner or later will not be a secret anymore. However, whenever there's a hotel doing something right, travelers should go out of their way to support small hotels and their families that live from it. My main objective in choosing this place was to stay as close to Parque Nacional Juan Castro Blanco as possible, which it did comply very adequately, being the only family run hotel in the area, less than 1km from the park entrance and 8km going up the mountain from the turnoff on the main road that leads to Ciudad Quesada. However this place did much more than comply. If you're looking for simple, clean, accommodation with hot water, no tvs nor telephones, home-cooked typical Tico breakfast included, fresh trout from their farm, in an absolutely spectacular natural setting with dozens of endemic tropical birds like the Quetzal, Euphonias, Silky Long Tailed Flycatcher and other birds, looking out at the pristine green mountaintops from your large cabin window, then counting all of the millions of shooting stars at night surrounded by total peace and the whispering wind, then this is the place for you. I could hear the Quetzal right outside my cabin, but I never had any luck in seeing it. Receiving a cellular phone signal should not pose a problem, you can see the tower on the top of one of the mountains. We could've even had the possibility of watching a movie on our tablet, but we didn't find anything that we wanted to watch that night. We had enough signal, however I suspect that it would get cut off now and then because of the windy night. 4x4 is not necessary to drive up to these cozy cabins. It does get cold, so dress accordingly and bring warm pajamas. It is important to take note that there are two types of cabins, make sure to get the new log cabins, #3 or #4. It looks like they're also building two more rooms modeled after these new rooms, however they're not open yet, they won't have the nice mountain view that the cabins #3 and #4 have. Cabins #1 and #2 were the first ones built, but they're not as nice. Also, the newer cabins have a modern hot water system, no suicide showers in these cabins (however the older ones might have those showers). The cabins are spartan in accessories, there is no soap nor towels nor shampoo, so bring those items with you. There is toilet paper though, no worries there. I felt like the pillows were a bit lumpy, it would be nice if they could improve on the pillows and the blankets. Another space for improvement is that we could hear clearly the voices in the cabin next door, they share a wall. So if you want acoustic privacy, take this into consideration. The owner Douglas and his family are very nice Costa Ricans that have lived in the area their whole lives, if you don't want to walk in the national park by yourself they would be more than happy to arrange a tour for you, don't forget to buy some chocolate or candies from his daughters. They easily made a vegetarian dinner for me, which was delicious. There was a group of Costa Rican women that didn't seem to like their trout dish, however, they seemed like the kind of people that shouldn't be at that hotel in the first place, people that are snobbish and hard to please. Cabins #3 and #4 have three twin beds and one queen bed, therefore you can get 5 people in a room if necessary. Breakfast is included in the price. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend this place, I live here in Costa Rica, and will be coming back in the future.
