We had a very enjoyable stay at The Palms at the end of our holiday in Sri Lanka, the staff really went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. Sadly initial impressions weren't great as reception was undergoing some works and our room had a few issues. Some aspects of the hotel are looking slightly dated. However Ruchira the manager took charge of the situation and arranged a room transfer, and from then on nothing was too much trouble. Special mentions to Dilshan at the bar and Shan at the pool who could not have been friendlier towards us. The food in the restaurant was excellent, really nice to have an egg station at breakfast, a range of authentic Sri Lankan food and beautiful fresh fruit that was presented with such care. Top tip: head round the beach to Coral Reef seafood restaurant for amazing sunset drinks.

We arrived at the Palms Hotel and were quickly welcomed with flowers and a warm reception. Drink on arrival and bags taken to our room. The hotel is amazing. We have spent two weeks there for our Easter Holiday. Nothing was too much trouble, it was clean and the food was delicious. The staff at the hotel cannot do enough for you. Special mentions to Asanka in the spa, gives the best massages, facials and leg and foot massages. Shan at the pool was very attentive and so was Noyal at the bar. All of these staff shone for us and couldn’t do enough to be helpful during our stay. However all staff were very friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble. We were welcomed to the new year celebrations and we loved every minute of it. We were made to feel very welcome and also made to feel very special. Ruchirer and her team were always so helpful. Checking that everything was in order. I have left the hotel feeling very sad as we felt that many of the staff not only were outstanding, they enjoyed being there and everyone had a smile. The warmth and welcome we received will stay with us all the time. We loved it so much we will be back for another holiday very soon. Thank you The Palms for making our holiday so special. Aaron and Gary

We stayed at the Palms in mid-February 2022, two weeks after the hotel re opened to foreign guests following Covid. This, I believe, is highly relevant to this review. We were based at the Palms for two weeks. On arrival we were given a first floor room. It was a good size and had everything we needed. Like most of the hotel, however, it was a bit tired and could have done with a minor refurb. We had requested a quiet room and for a couple of days it was great. At the weekend the hotel is used as a beach break by Sri Lankan folk and by groups of Indian clients on tour. On the Saturday night a Bollywood Disco was held in the function room which we discovered was about 30 feet from our room. Definitely not quiet that night. Similarly on the Tuesday there was a live band downstairs, the night prior to us going on an early start tour. Again, little sleep. We spoke to the reception staff prior to leaving and they had no idea if there would be any music at the weekend when we returned and suggested we asked again when we got back. On returning three days later we were told there would be no music at the weekend. Wrong! Again, a Bollywood type DJ downstairs. By then we were totally out of patience and I spoke to the resident manager who moved us to another room that evening. On arrival at the “new” room the balcony faced right opposite the Beachboys hut, on the beach! Thankfully they had no beach parties while we were there. Little thought given to allocation, there then, considering at least half of the hotel was empty.. I labour this point, as it reflects the overall attitude of the management and the reception staff especially. Some of the staff just seem to be going through the motions and seem demoralised. The hotel and head office were told that my wife is gluten intolerant and also had a dairy allergy. Nothing was in place when we arrived, there was no chat with the chef and we were just left to get on with it. The restaurant supervisor said he would walk around the buffet with my wife each day, after it was brought to his attention, but he only did it for one night. Most of the supervisors have a mobile glued to their ear 24/7. Occupancy at the hotel varied from 30 to 60 people a night, obviously more at the weekends rising to maybe 120. From memory there are 105 rooms, so the management cannot say they were busy! On a positive note, the rest of the staff were great and could not do enough for you. Room boy, bar staff, pool boy, waiters were all super. Maybe they tried harder with a view to a tip, who knows. At least they would chat with you. Local drinks etc were fine and plentiful. No waiting for a drink. At the time of our visit, the food was predominantly local and Indian cuisine. Not a problem for me as I am a curry monster. For anyone not enjoying spicy food, it would be a struggle. There was normally a pasta dish of some description, some fish and a very chewy beef dish. Lunchtimes, depending on occupancy there would be a buffet or a fixed menu. The fixed menu was basically a five-course meal with a choice of two main courses and desserts. The food was extremely well presented and was very nice. Lot to eat for lunch though! Strange there was nowhere to get a snack type lunch though. Again, presumably reduced service due to occupancy. Breakfast was fine. Outside the hotel, the resort was fairly quiet. That being said, we ate/drank out a few times and had no issues with service, food, drink or anything else for that matter. This was my fifth visit to Sri Lanka and I thought I knew what to expect. On balance I am prepared to give the hotel the benefit of the doubt in view of their recent re-opening and the ongoing problems with the economy in the country. Would I return to The Palms? No. The holiday, a covid belated honeymoon, cost a considerable sum of money and we certainly did not receive value for money. We/I have probably stayed in over a dozen hotels in Sri Lanka over the years, and this is easily at the bottom of the list. Hopefully once they have “warmed up” to tourism again it will be once again deserving of some of the earlier reviews that I based my decision to book on. Alternatively, with hindsight, maybe they could have followed the Eden’s example and closed down for this season for a refurbishment? As a footnote, if anyone is staying in the Beruwala/Bentota area, I have a good friend of 15 years standing who is a licensed guide/driver. II am very happy to pass on his details if you PM me.
