I arrived with a friend. We expect a double room with twin beds. One of the owners told us they only had a double room with a double bed for the price we agreed by phone or a double room with twin beds for a considerable high price. We decided to take the double room with a double beed. The next day, the other owner told us that we could move to a new double room with twin beds. We would have appreciated if they had told us about this option the day our arrival, and not one day later. That made us think the other owner hid us some information in order to rent a more expensive room. Also take into account that the quality of rooms depends a lot on which room you are, even if they have the same price. Our first room was hot and difficult to ventilate. Our second room was cooler and easier to ventilate. A general problem is the position of AC: they point to the beds and blow the (cold) air over your face and body. Breakfast is very simple and products are not fresh but industrial.

Just a few minutes walk up from the port, this is an oasis away from the day trippers which make the harbour busy even in the off season. Although I was on my own I had booked a large studio that sleeps three (two singles and a large sofa) as it came with a patio and small kitchen. The bathroom was also large - you could fit three in the shower - and beautifully appointed. The kitchen area was small with small fridge. Although there was a small stove top the two very small pots provided are really just designed for boiling an egg or water. There was also a kettle and items for coffee and tea. Plenty of plates and cutlery and a few small drinking glasses. The outdoor area was on a shared patio with plenty of room and three comfortable deck chairs and table. As mine was at the end it was relatively private. The smaller rooms share communal courtyard space with chairs and tables dotted around. The whole courtyard area is is a lovely, quiet shaded place away from the heat and bustle just a few minutes walk away at the port. There are an abundance of bars and restaurants nearby at the harbour and in the back streets. There a number of supermarkets a few minutes away but I found the small one right on the port as good as any. Breakfast is served on your patio and is normally extra but as I was just a single in a three person room the host provided me with breakfast without charge. It would certainly be worth paying for. Very good WiFi suitable for streaming.

Room Tip: Choose the larger rooms if you want your own patio area but the communal courtyard is lovely

A short walk from the harbour and in a quiet cul de sac. The rooms are cleaned every day with fresh towels. Great shower. Air con and tv (not that we watched it). The location was ideal and the island is idyllic. Thanks Stella. We will be back.

I had gone to their own website to book our room, as I find that small properties prefer that, so they don't have to pay any extra fees to other services. I got through the reservation process (including entering my credit card) and received an email from them that said "Your Booking is AWAITING confirmation from the hotel!" and that "Alkionides pension informs you that a booking has been Placed in our reservation system. Hotel: Alkionides pension - for Room: Double or Twin Room. The Reference Number (referred as Booking ID) for your booking is: XXXX. IT WILL BE CONFIRMED WITHIN 24 HOURS AND YOU WILL RECEIVE A FINAL NOTICE VIA EMAIL." So I think, hmmm... Ok. And move on to other pieces of our trip. Two days later I realized that I hadn't heard back from them so emailed them to ask for the confirmation. What I received instead was a terse email: "We don't have available room for this night. We already cancel your reservation". Well if you don't have availability, WHY did you not show that on the website, like everyone else? And were you going to tell me that you cancelled my reservation so I could look elsewhere? I'm mostly just annoyed that I have to start all over trying to find a room on Hydra for one night (which apparently is an issue, many places seem to have a 2-4 night minimum - which I suspect might be the problem here. She got someone who wants to stay longer). I can't change my itinerary at this point, so I just have to keep looking, but I"m pretty annoyed. And disappointed, it looks like a nice place to stay.

Planned to have the Hydra donkeys lug our suitcases up the hill for us, but when we showed them the address, it was too close for them to make their normal fee. We had a basement room - large, great A/C, comfortable. We paid extra for breakfast - worth it, but it is served personally, not in a buffet. So there may be a wait. Asked Stella where the nearest laundromat was and she said she would do our laundry for us. There was a reasonable charge and we appreciated her personal touch. She prefers euros. Despite what the reservation said, she does not take a pre-payment on your credit card. Great place. Highly recommended.
