Wonderful experience! The camp is located into Yala National park allowing for a very calm and relaxed setting. The tents are very comfortable and clean with linen, amenities and air conditioning. The staff goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable; food was so delicious and our vegetarian needs were accommodated with no issues. The food is freshly home made and we were impressed by the variety of curries and quality at each meal. Raj was extremely knowledgeable and helpful though-out our stay; during the safari he helped us spotted birds and animals and gave us details on the wild life. We were so lucky to spot both a bear and a leopard in the same day!

This could have easily been a 5-star rating if the service and food quality had lived up to the price tag, which unfortunately they really didn't. Read on for details. First some positive highlights: the private setting of the camp by the lake and the well-equipped tents are wonderful. After encountering so many plastic bottles everywhere in Sri Lanka, we were delighted to find glass bottles here not just for water but for soft drinks as well. The sunset bar service by the lake was lovely, and the staff served up some excellent cocktails for us by the fire. The safari jeeps are in great condition and our driver made every effort to adapt to our requests. Now on to the first disappointment: dining. Resorts we have stayed at that cost more than US$1,000 per night typically offer an excellent breadth and quality of food. What we found at Leopard Trails, on the other hand, was just about at the same level as the $150 hotel we stayed at the night before in Ella. Just a few examples: Breakfast: we were unable to get a proper soft-boiled egg (came hard-boiled both times), nor a sunny-side up fried egg (came completely hard cooked). The only bread option was factory white toast, whereas other hotels at this price level would serve a variety of home-baked breads and pastries. The sausages tasted like they probably contained more factory additives than real meat. Other common breakfast items such as yoghurt or muesli were not offered. Lunch/Dinner: all four meals we had were variations of local cuisine (curries, rice, roti, stewed vegetables). They were good, but quite basic. At this price level, other hotels serve significantly more refined dishes and more variety, including at minimum one non-local option per meal. The only options for kids were fries with nuggets and fries with hot dogs - again something that's totally fine at $150 per night but not at $1,000+. The second disappointment was that two experiences advertised on the website were not available: (1) bush walks and (2) the junior ranger program. We were looking forward to experiencing the environment on foot, as that's something we enjoyed a lot on other safaris. When we inquired about this option, our guide told us it's "not really something we do here". The junior ranger program sounded like a lot of fun and promises keeping kids engaged while parents enjoy some relaxation time - but turned out to simply consist of the guide pointing out animals to the kids during the normal jeep drives. The third disappointment was the service level, which probably varies a lot based on the guide/host you are assigned, since they look after you around the clock (from check-in to the safari drives all the way to meal time etc.). Based on reading some of the other amazing reviews here, it sounds like we were simply unlucky on this front. Our guide was friendly but totally dazed and not in tune with any details. We weren't given a room key during check-in and as a result were later locked out after housekeeping came. No information about the camp was shared proactively, so we had to probe and guess every little bit ourselves (how to store valuables, what are the meal times, what can the kids do between jeep drives). Similarly on the safari drives: we had to probe rather than being given information proactively, and every question about the park or the animals was answered with a one-sentence response, so we felt like we really weren't learning as much as we could be. Coffee/tea was only offered at the end of breakfast. The safety card in the room advised walking with a flashlight at night, but the one in our room was missing. When we requested a flashlight from our guide, the response was "I guess we must have run out of flashlights". The system of having the guides act not just as rangers but also as front-desk & restaurant hosts is quite a unique one. It must work well for Leopard Trails, but the big downside is that the entire guest experience is dependent on what guide you get. Overall, it's a truly beautiful place with incredible potential but needs a higher-caliber chef, some investments in quality food ingredients, and better screening/training of the guides.

What a fantastic experience! We were slightly apprehensive about staying in the jungle in a tent but the whole trip was amazing. We were met by our host Nolan who looked after us so well. The tent was great. Not exactly roughing it with air conditioning and en suite bathroom!! The outside shower was different! The game drives were great fun in the jeep and we had a couple of close encounters with elephants which was brilliant. We didn’t manage to spot a leopard but saw lots of other wildlife. The food in camp was also very good and the staff all friendly and helpful.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in March, it was one of the best and most memorable experiences we’ve ever had. The safaris were led by Dhanula, who was our exceptionally knowledgeable guide, as well as our friendly and charming host. The driver, Izu, was incredible too - his driving skills were amazing! Willpatu National Park is diverse and beautiful; you will see plenty of deer, water buffalo, a wide species of colourful birds, and hopefully, like us, elephants, leopards and the rare sloth bear. Our tent had everything we needed, including a large A/C unit and a refreshing shower under the stars. The food was delicious, but above all, the attention to detail, providing an extremely personal service, was top notch. Thank you Dhanula and your excellent staff for such a wonderful stay - we’ll be back.

Our two nights on an all inclusive basis at this lovely luxury camp were very special, with excellent service and delicious food in a very romantic setting. Hurricane lamps lit our way back to our “tents” each evening and the pre-dinner drinks around a campfire on the decking were magical. We had an air conditioned pool suite (“Ebony”), which was very spacious and comfortable with a small private pool with views over wetland. The location is secluded and feels quite unique. Krishan guided us out on 3 safaris - one to block 1 (tracks very rough due to recent floods) and two to the quieter block 5 - we saw lovely birds, crocodiles, elephant, wild boar and were lucky enough to see a pair of leopard cubs on our last drive - & Krishan kindly provided better photos than we could get! We would point out however that our lovely tent pool needed a pump whose noise detracted a bit from the wonderful setting, and two of our safari trips had 6 guests, so Krishan had to ride in the cabin with the driver which we felt on those occasions gave us a less rich viewing experience. Overall, we had a thoroughly indulgent stay, were very well looked after by the super team, and enjoyed meeting other lovely camp guests - we would highly recommend.

This is a very nice lodge. The tents are fairly basic in comparison with where we have stayed before but the bed was comfortable. Outside shower. The food was good quantity and quality. Drinks were basic and ok. The guide and driver was good, knowledgeable and tried to get us to see as much as possible. The viewing wasn't the best but they have struggled following the monsoon rains so not sure if that was truly the normal experience. In Sector 5 there is very little places to go so if the animals are in the road then you will see them if not you won't. In sector 1 it is bigger so better but again in many cases thick scrub so unless they are near the roads you may struggle to see anything

Our stay at leopard trails was quite amazing and a memorable experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives our guide kristan and driver rodi knew the roads of the various blocks of the game park, like the back of their hands and were so incredibly skilled at finding us leopards, elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, monkeys, and a very large variety of bird species. The accommodation at leopard trails was very comfortable The food was very delicious and the service from all the team very attentive. I would highly recommend leopard Trail safaris. The facilities at Leopard trails are second to none. You would never know you were sleeping under canvas. Our room was luxurious with all that we would expect from a 5 star hotel. The good was also five-star quality.I have no idea how they manage it, but they do. Staff were amazing as well. Could not do enough for us. Now, on to our actual safari experience. Wow, just wow! Early starts with our guide Hasanthe and our driver. Such a knowledgeable pair. Both worked as Spotters, and we were amazed at how they did it. We saw so much, including a large male leopard just crossing the road before us. Elephants, including a Tusker who are now rare. Close encounters (safe, of course) were fantastic. I have so many photos and fantastic memories, but one of the best will be hearing a leopard calling her cubs to her. Whilst we didn't see her, the excitement of sitting just probably feet away hearing the call was haunting. I would recommend this experience to anyone.
