Only one man has made his home for thirty-five years amongst the world's highest concentration of leopards in the wild. Noel Rodrigo personally guides guests into Sri Lanka's most dramatic landscapes and natural habitats for elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles as well, in the utmost comfort, thanks to his former career as a first class airline cabin manager. Setting Noel's safaris to Yala and Wilpattu National Parks apart however are not merely the Toyota jeeps customized with camera support points and powerful binoculars for every guest, nor the South African tents outfitted with king size beds, en suite bathrooms, cooling units and private decks, nor even the healthy homemade Sri Lankan cuisine and imported wines. "I don't want my guests to feel any difference," says Noel of his elite team, recognized for their expertise by leading travel agents and international publications including Robb Report, Tatler and How To Spend It. In close coordination, Noel and these equally attuned animal trackers and bird specialists lead twice-daily game drives - most see a leopard, often many -- while hornbills, kingfishers and peacocks flutter overhead. "Elephants may come to drink at the waterhole by your tent," Noel tantalizingly warns his guests of all ages, honeymooners, families and friends among them, at his well appointed camps in the Sri Lankan jungle and high upon the Knuckles Range where nature photography lessons, cooking classes and equatorial stargazing are among the additional activities on offer amidst these timeless natural surroundings.

Once again Noel Rodrigo's Leopard ~Safaris has done us proud. The two day stay at the Safaris, filled with activity for children and adults alike, left us wanting for nothing more than that it would never end. Plenty of animal sightings, including leopards, excellent genuine Sri Lankan food, extremely comfortable accommodation and dedicated staff made our visit memorable in every way. Having this extended stay at the Safaris made it more leisurely and specially enjoyable. A great and never to be forgotten experience.

It was the first time I slept in a tent in the jungle and could not almost sleep at night because of all those non-familiar noises around, but it will be an experience I will treasure and remember for a lifetime. I will never forget the dedication of all the staff in the camp put in making my stay there unforgettable: from the tent upgrade, to the dining under the stars and breakfast in the wild. Special thanks to ranger Pasi who made his best to make me happy and spot a leopard, which was my biggest with. Could not see one , but saw lots of other wonderful animals and... well, I have another reason to come back. I would recommend it to anyone who loves nature and wildlife in an "easy" and really comfortable environment.

It is all about expectations. The more you pay the higher the expectations. Previous ratings also play a vital part. Based on the price paid (600usd per night) you expect a really good treat. This place is not even close to luxury as it is stated a luxury camp. The facilities are pretty worn and the basic accommodation is in a tent. Food is very basic and you are eg served one small slice of pineapple per person to your breakfast. The safari experience is the same as on every other lodging -more cars than animals The camp is situated just outside Kataragama and outside the NP. Staff is however very service minded and there best based on the circumstances. Eventually you find yourself camping outside the village eating at best average food paying 400 usd a night net (safari 185 usd). You do that only once. Then you realize that there are no ratings after 2017. Very strange.

Response from SriLankaLeopard, Owner at Leopard Safaris by KK Collection
Responded Jan 8, 2020
Dear Jeanette, Thank you for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor, and kind comments regarding our lovely staff and their service, however we are terribly disappointed to hear your expectations were not fulfilled in terms of value. Our package is an all-inclusive rate of accommodation, daily safari (including ticket price and charges), activities at camp, as well as all you can eat food and drinks – alcoholic and non-alcoholic. We apologise if you feel there was not enough pineapple on your plate, and would have been more than happy to have brought more had you asked. Our food is far from ‘basic’, and it is authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, sourced from local farmers and our own permaculture garden, as we state on all our online presence. Indeed most of our guests say about our food that it's 'the best they had in Sri Lanka' - but then again, everybody is different. The $185 USD extra charge – that we are still awaiting your payment to be credited – is for the additional private safari you had booked while at camp. This is to cover the cost of the park entrance fees, jeep fees, driver fees, taxes, petrol, and government charges. In terms of the safari experience, the amount of jeeps allowed inside Yala at one time is unfortunately not something we are able to control or monitor, as we are not owners of the National Park (hence why we are also located on the border outside the park). However, we do use the ‘quieter’ entrance than most safari companies in order to avoid this crowd. Our jeeps and guides are equipped for maximum wildlife viewing with minimal animal disturbance. Please do check our TripAdvisor reviews again as I think you may be mistaken regarding our reviews. We have indeed had many fantastic reviews after 2017, including Hall of Fame Award last year (receiving the Certificate of Excellence 5 years consecutively). We would love to have another chance to not only fulfil your expectations, but also exceed them. If we do have the pleasure of having you back at our eco campsite, we would recommend a Luxury Lodge Tent should you wish to have a real ‘luxury’ experience – as you chose to stay in our more rustic Classic Mobile Tents. Warm regards, Noel & team

We spent two days in Yala camp in the luxury tent/lodge with our two children. It was incredibly spacious, had a really luxurious feel about it, comfortable beds and was very clean. The safari experience was superb. We did a drive every morning and evening. They were all different. We were lucky enough to see leopard, but largely due to some impressive knowledge and tracking on the part of Noel, we came up very close whilst all the other jeeps were looking the other way! The guides had a good knowledge of the wildlife and the driving itself was an adventure for the kids. The bird life is definitely a highlight. The food was some of the best we had in Sri Lanka, very authentic and made with all local ingredients. We ate out under the stars every night which was wonderful. The company of Noel and his wife added to the enjoyment and it was clear they had really thought through the little things, from the seating area, the "cooling off pool" after a long hot drive, and the facilities within the sleeping quarters (ear plugs for those who couldn't sleep with the night time sounds, a safe, plug sockets by the beds etc). We would definitely recommend it.

What can I say, this was one to tick off on the bucket list, I was one of a group of 6 over 60's ladies, we were welcomed with a drink and a cold towel and our friend Pasi and Sameer from Wilpattu Camp, we were shown to our tents, then a quick lunch and straight out for the first of 4 game drives over two days, hopefully to see an elusive leopard. After the game drive in Zone 1( no leopard sighting) we had a most delicious evening meal with wine, early to bed, early to rise for next game drive (no leopard), bucket shower on return with nice warm water, followed by a smashing breakfast, relaxing rest of morning then lunch and an afternoon game drive, oh, it rained hard too, so rain capes on in the jeep, this time we were hot on the leopards trail but so many jeeps ahead of us that we couldn't see it (such a shame). Our last day Pasi and Sameer took us to Zone 5, we had the nod about a leopard sighting and followed the directions, what a good choice Leopard found sunning himself and playing around like a cat, when the leopard vanished Sameer told us we had been watching it for an hour (it felt like 5 mins), definitley the highlight of our trip. by the way we also saw loads of other wildlife too. Again the staff were polite, attentive and fun, very informative about the area and the wildlife, this is definitley one you should stay at in this area.
