Loved it so much last time we booked a week this year. Exactly as we found it last year except the doors and windows of all the rooms have been upgraded. Hire car (VW Tiguan 4motion) coped well with the dirt track down the mountain. I would advise that if you don't have a good 4x4 hire car or have... More

Small stones beach very clear blue/green water great shady trees near the water. The hotel is elevated about 10 metres above the small protected bay within 1 km walk from the ferry service from Chora Sfakion. There is a water taxi available from the ferry port but we chose to walk which was enjoyable. Food at the restaurant was elk... More

For me, the best thing about the Old Phoenix is its location on a small cove on the west side of a peninsula that is covered - literally covered - with ancient ruins. It is accessible by boat or an easy path (30 minutes around the peninsula) from Loutro, where the ferry boats dock. The rooms are simple, and kept... More

We rented a brilliant villa on a hill top on the North of the Island, remote, outstanding views, brilliant sunsets. Sea to the front, snow topped mountains to the back, everything we had at home, TV, WiFi, good kitchen and a perfect pool. I’m not going to review this villa as it’s already hard to secure due to it’s ability... More

This is a quite and remote place perfect for relaxing vacation. Rooms are basic and food is ok but ,,,, service is not good. Waiters do not give you the feeling you are welcome. They get upset very often due to heavy work load and make it uncomfortable guests. Food is very limited and variety should be larger. Can't be... More

My first trip to The Old Phoenix Hotel located in the perfectly formed Finix Bay in South Western Crete, where the mountains descend to meet the Libyan sea, was by canoe from Loutro. I had read an article about this ‘hush hush hideaway’ in the Sunday Times Traveller Magazine and I had paddled over from Loutro to Finix for a... More

Great location if you want to get away from it all, do some gorge walking (Aradena and Imbros very accessible) and generally relax. Reasonably sized rooms with commanding view of Finix Bay, air conditioning if required (not necessary as overhead fan) my only criticism as such being no shower cubicle i.e. the usual hand held shower. Beautifully clear water (saw... More

I had been looking forward to staying at the Old Phoenix for a few years now, having stayed at Loutro and Hora Sfakia in the past, and having heard so much about it. After a night in Loutro last week I walked over to the Finix Bay, and asked for a room at the Old Phoenix. It took them 15... More

We found the standard of the rooms to be excellent. The big downside of this hotel is the quality of the staff, all but one of the staff ( a mature staff member) were unfriendly and not at all welcoming. Unfortunately we only met the only friendly member of staff when we were leaving. When asking a question or ordering... More

We flew into Chania on the north side of Crete, took a taxi down through the mountains to Svakia, then a ferry around to Loutro before final leg of the journey on another ferry to The Old Phoenix, which is nestled in its own bay. Was it worth the effort? Yes, of course! So what's here? TV - no. Radio... More
