Relais Il Canalicchio stands like a small gem inset into the summit of a hill. The picturesque town built around the Castello di Poggio, which dates to the 10th-11th centuries, dominates the town with its imposing tower and a splendid little church close to the vineyards and olive groves at the centre of the lush Umbrian countryside. The luxury Relais has almost completely remodeled and enclosed the town of Canalicchio, an intact and resplendent oasis of peace, where only the twittering of birds interrupts the relaxing stillness. Inside, the historic and rural origins of the place are obvious; it still has its apparent castle-like structure and boasts an enormous and exquisite millstone, the old press and some lovely arches, evoking the enchanting atmosphere and charm of times gone by.

Exceptional place lost in the countryside south of Perugia. Beautiful experience. Excellent restaurant. Unique view (from the high hill amazing view through the horizon) and environment (everything in the traditional stone brick architecture with amazing designs). Truly a Good time.

Be very careful! On approaching the property we wondered what we were letting ourselves into. The car park was overgrown and the place was deserted. Reception were particularly unhelpful...restaurant closed at 2pm and even though we arrived just before that time, there qA no offer of food or room service. We had prebooked a meal for 7.30pm (in January!) only to be told that they had a block booking, the restaurant did not open til 8pm and even then we would have to come along after 9pm and choose from a set menu that was for the block booking. Booked a Country Superior Dependance. The room was terrible. It was clean but it was sparse and barren compared to the web pictures. The sofa was stained and ripped and the terrace was dressed with 2 half empty tubs...the hotel later explained due to the weather albeit no other hotel on our trip had such issues. The living room would challenge anyone's idea of comfort. We requested a room change but could only be offered a similarly uninspiring room without a balcony..but the promise that we could change the next day. On reflection we decided not to stay. Reception then tried to offer other rooms albeit they had earlier said we had seen the one available. Reception, after a prolonged call with the hotel director, insisted on a 2 night no show cancellation charge notwithstanding that we had shown up and the hotel had been unable to offer the accommodation booked as described on its website. Despite numerous exchanges since, the hotel insists on keeping its 2 days payment. Frankly they need the money to put some furniture and feeling into the room that we were offered. Just compare the pics! As I say...this is the only hotel I have ever walked away from.

Spent a week here and absolutely loved every moment. I would highly recommend this property and destination. Best time to visit would be late May and early June before the crowds and heat. Just exquisite views of the country side and not far from Florence for a day trip. Will definitely visit again!

I stayed at this hotel for a destination wedding that was taking place near by so it was nice to have a large group of people there to mingle with as this hotel is very small and very quiet, almost to quiet, unless you don't mind that kind of atmosphere. It was personally to "in the middle of nowhere" for me and I would have only stayed maximum 2 nights if I had a choice. With that being said, it had a very historical authentic Italian village feel and was extremely well maintained. Very nice enchanting décor thought-out and very clean everywhere. The pool was small but nice and necessary as you can imagine in July how hot it was! The views from from the hotel were gorgeous as it is located on a hill in the countryside so you are surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The sunset's were stunning! The food was quite good as well.

The place is gorgeous, surrounded by olive trees in a medieval village. We stayed in the new part near the swimming pool in a nice flat. The services weren't very accurate: if you are a luxury location, I think to find a clean swimming pool and more tidiness in the garden around the pool. I suppose that the relais open only same days ago, but when you open everything must be ready. If the plumber arrive at 7.30 to do some work and you are on holiday...it won't be very appreciated Good breakfast and friendly staff. I didn't try the restaurant

I cannot say enough good about Relais Il Canallcchio! What a BEAUTIFUL place, a must stay if you are in Umbria. Off the beaten path, so that makes it ideal to get the peace and quiet you desire. The inn is wonderful! Great food and service. Cannot wait to go back again!

We enjoyed our stay here but found the food not of the usual standard for Italy. It was very repetitive and we ended up eating at the restaurant at the bottom of the drive like other hotel guests. Rooms are rather dated and not all rooms have WiFi. The grounds are rather run down, which is a pity as this is a wonderful spot and convenient for exploring the countryside. The shuttle driver need to allow more time for connections. We nearly missed our return flight. The hotel is reasonably priced.

I gave been bringing groups of travelers to Italy for 20 years. Usually I choose a hotel within walking distance of local restaurants or bars. I was reluctant to book this hotel because of its isolated locale. I was so pleasantly surprised! The setting was breathtaking, the staff was warm and accommodating, the food was excellent. The cooking class was great- each person prepared their own food, which eliminated too many hands in the food! After our daily excursions, we all enjoyed the ambience and tranquility of this beautiful hotel. There was a piano player in our group which also helped pass the evenings. Even the staff joined in our sing slings. I will definitely bring another group here in the future.
