One of the best places to visit in springtime is Elba, and the RTA Minihotel Lacona is the ideal place for family and friends to stay. Katia and her family welcome you like part of their family. The setting is relaxed and perfect, the mini apartments are clean and have beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding nature. A short trail leads you to the beach, where there is also parking for Hotel guests if you go by car. In high season the Mini-hotel offers a cooler respite from the more crowded beach area, an oasis of color and soft breezes. Plus Katia and family offer you treats from their garden and pantry to try! All in all an ideal base from which to visit the island. We can't wait to come back!

We stayed ten days at this hotel in 2010. The hotel was clean, but not luxury. We had a kitchen in the room. We were close to a small town and not far from a number of beaches. Very kind and friendly owners.

Room Tip: The hotel is in a quiet area. All rooms are quiet. Maybe get one at second floor for a nicer view.

We visited the Island of Elba at the end of October 2010 and, on the suggestion from a friend, we stayed at the Mini Hotel. The hotel is situated in a beautiful location on the Island, centrally positioned to explore its rugged beauty and its various attractions, whether old quaint towns or beautiful sandy beaches (Lacona, Cavoli, etc.). Our self-contained apartment unit on the main floor was quiet, spacious and had all the conveniences we needed. The furniture was basic, but it was very comfortable. It also enjoyed a spectacular view over the sea and the gulf of Lacona. We did not meet the owner of the Hotel, signor Gentili, and his wife Karin, with whom we had been in contact by email, as they were traveling out of the country. But his daughter Katia, her husband, Alessandro and their two children, were very kind and were ready to answer any question we had. In the evenings, we joined them in the café/lounge and enjoyed their company and that of other guests. WIFI was not available in the apartment where we were staying, but it was available and free in the café/lounge. This was our very first visit to Elba, and we loved it. To do justice to the Island, it has to be explored by car. In that context, the location of the Mini Hotel is perfect. We were on the Island at the very end of the season, when everything tends to shut down for the year. Our next trip to the Island will be a bit earlier, while still avoiding the summer month’s crowds. We would not hesitate to stay at the Mini Hotel and to recommend it to friends.

We stayed with our toddler for one week. Accommodation on the second floor was spacious and very clean with beautiful sea views across two bays. Only complaint: hard pillows. I would say you would definitely need a car here (we hired at Pisa airport and took the ferry from Piombino). Allow 1.5 hours driving from Pisa to Piombino. The ferry is quite expensive (approx. 120 euro return with car) for the one-hour crossing. I originally bought a return ticket in Piombino for 49 euro but the ticket office failed to tell me that this was only valid for return within three hours! But this is Italy after all. I had to pay another 72 euro for the return sailing. Be careful of the turn into the Mini Hotel from the public road - it's on a very sharp bend. Lacona is quiet and well situated being about equidistant from Portoferraio, Marina di Campo, Porto Azzurro and Capoliveri. Marina di Campo is the most touristic of these, Capoliveri is very pretty located on a hill but can be difficult to find parking there. Apart from Italians, tourists in the main are German, Swiss and Austrians. In Marina di Campo we tried three times to go on the advertised 2-hour boat trip on the 'Mickey Mouse'. Well named as it never happened despite being twice assured by the operator that the engine would be fixed "domani". Porto Azzurro was our favourite nearby town with a beautiful marina. The town comes to life at night when people come out for the ritual 'passaeggiata', eat their nightly 'gelato' and browse the stalls selling mostly knick knacks. But watch out for cyclists in the 'pedestrian' zones as they seem to believe they have a right to squeeze between the people! The nearest shop to the Mini Hotel is pretty bad and overpriced though it has an ATM. You really need to drive to one of the nearby towns for shopping. Overall a pleasant stay on Elba.

We arrived without a clear picture of where and what the hotel is. We had just got married and were looking for a real chill out week. The Hotel is halfway up a hillside near the elusive settlement of Lacona and has stunning views over 2 bays and the most beautiful countryside. It is self catering, with a bar but the nearest shop and bank is 15 minutes walk downhill, so you either need a car or to be active and enjoy a healthy walk. The 2 beaches are large and good quality 20-30 mins walk downhill from the hotel. The apartment we stayed in included a living room/kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom. It was spotless with all fixtures in good condition with ample cooking stuff. The landlady was incredibly helpful and really took care of her guests. We were lucky enough to be present for one of their their barbecue which they laid on free for all their guests (30 ish). Reccomended for active people or those willing to hire own transport, occasional buses do run but may take a bit of planning. We spent 4 days exploring the local area then hired a car for the last 3 (E45 per day) and had a great time.
