Authentic XIX century manor built in curios Gothic Romantic style, encircled by lakes and giant desolated forest park. If you admire the real-thing bric-a-brac, that’s a place for you. If you can’t survive without round a clock room service, shiny lobby or midnight pub crawl; better stay away.

General.
Be prepared for very secluded stay. Even on week-ends and major holidays you often find the castle at your own use, with no-one else easily visible or reachable. Just wander along giant empty ballrooms, play piano or dance, stare at lakes and marvel amazing full-oak staircase leading to 2nd floor rooms. It feels like you rented entire castle for you own holidays.

Rooms.
Fine décor (especially Tower suite), real antiquarian furniture, ceilings going 6 metres high, bubble bath (probably suites only), stuffed forest chicken mounting a cabinet and quite tranquil atmosphere of lovely by-gone times.

Service:
Heartfull, but limited to food, swimming pool/sauna and room cleaning. That is not a full-option hotel you used to know, more close definition is “castle home stay”.

Food.
Restaurant in the basement normally stay open for a couple hours lunch time and little longer for a dinner. If no guest is scheduled to appear, everything might be already closed by 8 p.m. Food is fine: modern international cuisine with some local twists. If you stay long days, you may ask cook for you favourite home recipes. Most probably you’ll marvel the results – it would be as tasteful and homely as your grandmother’s special event dinner.

Arrival.
If there is no-one around entire building, just stroll in front of guest parking or try to reach the basement restaurant. Attendant will appear sooner or later.

Environs:
Large forest park ideal for nature lovers; two lakes, horse-riding which is open even for children (they keep white pony for such cases). Rabbit feeding (ask permission first !) will keep your children happy for hours. Overall, it’s very peaceful around.

What’s bad:
If you wish to wander little further then castle’s park, beware of dogs. Local village monster mongrels show their attitude without hesitation. Just find yourself anywhere closer then 100 meters to their fence (or worse, unfenced grassland), and be ready for highly stressful experience. Always carry large sturdy stick and learn Latvian for “Nikns Suns”.

Hints.
Take Tower suite. It’s entirely worth the money asked. You get palatial premises, not a servant’s corner.

OK guys, if you're going to Riga, this place is worth considering. Birini Castle is a little run down but it is brilliant... the sort of place the very highest Soviet officials would have stayed for their summer holidays.

The castle itself dates back to the late 1700s and the main building is awesome. The hotel rooms in the main castle do need some modernisation however... but next to the hotel is a more modern hotel block with much more modern rooms, all rooms are ensuite in both the castle and the coach house.

The setting is stunning, with the main castle looking out over its own lake. There are acres of land to explore as well... great for the kids and in the summer this place must be very popular indeed with nature trails, boating and pony riding all thrown in.

The food here is excellent, on the night we stayed there, we had the whole restaurant to ourselves but it was brilliant. There is a sauna and pool onsite but the bad thing is that you have to pre-book it and it isn't free. I'd like to see this FOC to all guests.

See -- for more info and pics.

This hotel is ideal for wedding receptions. The Castle is situated in extensive grounds beside a lake and woodland. It has all the appearance of a fairy-tale wedding venue, complete with extras such as the arrival of the bride and groom by a horse and carriage. The rooms in the main Castle building are extensive and supplementary rooms are available in smaller adjacent lodges. The wedding banquet was lavish with a mixture of true Latvian food accompanied by pork, chicken and vegetables. The portions were very generous, far more than we could possibly eat. The buffet breakfast was possibly the most lavish I have ever seen – an unbelievable choice of hot food, cold buffet, cereals and fruit. The service was good but the establishment clearly works to a specified time schedule and is not so flexible for out-of-hours service or changes to meal times.

Dirty linen in the bed: it looks like it hasn't been changed since the previous occupants. Full of other people's hair and a dirty pillow. No air conditioning. It was hard to sleep.
No soundproofing. There is no elevator, we were placed on the 4th(?) floor, there are many stairs. The room consisted of two rooms, both filled with beds and not enough space. There are sockets 10 cm above the floor and behind the cabinet; there are very few of them.
Breakfast was very poor, we left hungry.
The services stated that the staff spoke Russian, but in reality no one spoke.
Pros: free parking, park for walks and you can swim in the lake. Delicious food in the restaurant.

We were very excited about our stay in the castle and got there after a day trip. The castle looks like a pink princess castle with a nice park and lake. When we arrived, the first trouble started. We originally booked a room in the castle. The lady in the hotel said it was a wrong information and we have to stay in a separate building. We argued and got a better room shown. Unfortunately there was a wedding on this day and it was very loud. We would not have had any possibility to move freely trough the castle and park due to the wedding so we canceled the booking. We drove back to the next town for another hour and had to look for another hotel. The lady was nice in the end and tried to help. Anyway it shows a really bad organization since we booked the room one day before and those details were missing.

Me and my husband visited castle for a romantic getaway. Everything was much better than we expected. We took special romantic package with dinner in the restaurant. We stayed in a tower suite. The room was wonderful you could feel real castle spirit in it. Upon arrival we were very nice greeted and received the bottle of wine and a plate of fruits in the room.
The staff warned us that it will be a wedding reception at the time of our stay. We were nicely surprised that even though the reception was behind the walls of our room we could not hear any noise or were disturbed during night sleep.
The restaurant is very small and cosy. The food was excellent and the prices are reasonable.
The castle has its own park and there is big are were you could take a nice walk.
I strongly recommend it for romantic getaway!

I stayed one night at the Birini Castle. The castle looks very nice from the outside and has a fine view over a little lake. The hotel rooms (except te suites) are in a building next the castle. The rooms are not cheap (70 Euro) but our room was very old und very run-down. It was clean and had everything you needed (light, table, television), but it's in desperate need of a make-over. Breakfast is served in the cellar of the castle. The restaurant is nicely done, but the breakfast is nothing to write home about - we left hungry and had a decent lunch somewhere else. I will not be back until they' ve invested in the refurbishment of the place.

We were originally booked for one night, but stayed for three - we loved it here! The castle was gorgeous, the staff friendly and the food at the resturant outstanding!

We really enjoyed our stay - we swam in the lake, had beers beside it, explored the castle (we stayed opposite the castle, in cheaper accomodation!) and just sat by the lake and relaxed!! I found it really hard to find reviews of this place, so I'm letting people know it was well worth a visit - the grounds are amazing (we went bush-walking etc), the indoor pool and steam room very relacing, and we enjoyed exploring the local area as well!

I would highly recommend as a place to stop and relax for a few days, if you driving through Baltic area (as we were), or want a reaonably priced counry-castle experience!

Location is veru good , but stuff starting from the entrancein the teritory is not polite and customer oriented ! Birini probably could be excellent variant for big group celebrations ( marriage, aniversary, funeral), but not the place for families . Payments already asked before You even see the castle....We were not satisfied and went to another castle just near to that one - Igate - with nice park and good restaurant on the entrance.

My wife and I stayed here and loved our stay. The castle is a beautiful setting overlooking a relaxing lake and in the middle of a large park with many trails to explore. We immediately felt our stress melting away. The indoor pool is great for a morning workout and the trails are perfect for a run. The restaurant was also very good with solid options for lunch/dinner- although it is the same menu for both.
