This was our second visit to NBR. The first time (2017) we stayed only two nights and we vowed to come back and stay for at least a week (European families often stay for two or three weeks at a time). The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable--AC, hot and cold water, nice showers, comfy beds, fully equipped kitchens or kitchenettes, and a nice buffet breakfast each morning. The location could not be better--you are steps from a beautiful crescent beach alongside a quiet fishing village that still has enough small shops, bars, and restaurants to keep you feeling like you're on vacation. You share the beach (and the village, of course) with the locals, but that's a major part of what makes this a charming and genuine Caribbean destination. Ancle, the manager, and Tracey, who runs the front desk, were gracious and helpful throughout every last detail of our stay, including assistance with our rental car and helping us find restaurants on short notice (we were there in the off-season). Ancle picked us up and dropped us off from the airport (about an hour's drive) and helped us load up on supplies along the way, even suggesting a stop here and there for some great local goodies, like "doubles" and fresh coconut water. (If you don't know about doubles and roti you should make every effort to acquaint yourselves!) My crew, believe it or not, comes for tropical research (we study dragonflies) and NBR is perfectly situated in Castara, a short drive to unspoiled wilderness, beautiful rivers and waterfalls, and several great beaches. There's good snorkeling, fishing, turtle-watching, and the NHB has a local population of huge rays (very safe) that cruise the bay from time to time. Use website to scan rooms, it's accurate. Gas and bank both 1 hr away, so plan wisely. ATMs iffy.Local market takes CC, but most don't. I'd say you could hardly do better. Enthusiastically endorsed!

Hi John It was truly a pleasure to have you returning and allowing us to be a part of your longer holiday experience along with your buddies . Thank you John for allowing me to juggle my memory on the dragon fly , locally named " Battty mamselle" , which led me to remember our prolific calypso writer " Lord Kitchener " who penned a song on this fly describing a lady, maybe our readers can search it on youtube . You always make me tic with the kind of conversations we do have , always with deep issues and thought provoking to find some of the answers to match. Thank you for your enlightening discussions John we look forward to accommodating you again Ancle

I laughed out loud when I arrived because this place was so ridiculously close to the beach and idyllic and beautiful! You cannot get any closer to the beach! We were lucky enough to get the grouper room and it is RIGHT on the water where you can watch pelicans diving in shoals of fish and the stingrays sliding around the ocean floor in Little Bay right next to the resort. I also saw a turtle while snorkeling! Room was huge, full kitchen plus a barbecue outside. It felt like we should be running a beach front restaurant! The service was friendly and great. Ancle himself drove us to our next destination and he gave lots of insight on history of the area, his life, philosophy, you name it! I am counting the days until my next visit.

Having returned from a second stay at The Naturalist, we just had to rave about it on Trip Advisor. Love, love, love this friendly beachside resort on the best little beach in Tobago. It’s so comfortable, friendly and safe, we can’t think of a better spot. We love the bay, with its sting rays and lovely snorkelling, and since this little resort has a perfect view of it (glorious sunsets!) why stay anywhere else? Comfy mattresses, perfect air conditioning for those who want it, my friend even wanted to buy the pillow, it was more comfortable than anything she has bought in the UK! Great breakfasts, and the owner, Ancle, is a most gracious host. Oh, and mustn’t forget Tracey with her big, big smile. We are loath to tell anyone about it because we want to keep The Naturalist all to ourselves, but that would be selfish. Enjoy this little slice of paradise, everyone - it’s hard to find anything like it.

Recently returned from a 2nd wonderful stay at the Naturalist in its incomparable setting right on the beach at beautiful Castara. For us, it has the perfect ingredients - locally owned, part of village life, relaxed simplicity yet with all the necessary comforts: good mattresses, air con, well equipped kitchenette, great shower and shaded outside seating area. Fantastic aesthetics with views from the upper balconies along the sweeping bay from where you can watch the fishermen launching their boats and nets, local kids playing football and stunning sunsets. It's rich in natural life with lush foliage behind the hotel full of birds, pelicans diving into the sea and large rays swimming by. If I sound mesmerised, I was! We again felt very well cared for by gracious Ancle George with all his local knowledge and kind, competent Tracey. Between them they keep an attentive, low key presence and are always willing to help with plans or issues or to chat over breakfast. The apartments are kept clean and well maintained. The Naturalist has developed over time and there are a variety of rooms at different prices (as shown on the website) so it is important to choose carefully. I've only stayed in an upper floor sea facing apartment with large verandah, well worth the higher rate. There's a friendly, authentic atmosphere and the high number of returning guests shows how very much it appeals to those seeking such an experience. It's an amazing beach for swimming and there are a few delightful places to eat close by (memorable fresh fish!). Castara has enough tourist infrastructure for comfort whilst retaining its own local life and character - a rare mix. Wherever else I travel I will always hope to return here. Thank you Ancle and Tracey!
