fairly nice rooms. The mosquito netting is made from some material that does not allow air to flow so rather hot. nice hammocks on patio. Floor fan was mounted on ceiling, which did not really help unless one stood directly under it, difficult with the beds positioned the way they were. Food was very good, staff was helpful. Owner was very creepy, however, He kept saying ' it is your room you can do what you want' but he's a total control freak. We didn't want people coming in our room because of covid and said so but they came in at least 6 times. They decided they needed to spray under the bed because of mosquitoes under the beds? (I certainly don't want to breathe poison while i'm sleeping!!! AND if you tuck the netting under the mattress it is irrelevant. The owner actually sat in on our evening bird checklists and said 'yes' every time we saw a bird and then contested some of the things like names, etc. Rather odd. Kept trying to get us to use different things like 'lime in soup' and bitters and would become quite insistent and bullying. He also sat with us at the table as if it were a bed and breakfast. the group was actually joking about being able to escape the place (aka jonestown) and, in fact, when our driver showed up an hour late we were sure that it was a plot. Also he insisted on giving us a rather weird tour that involved 15 minutes pointing out the 3 things in the gift shop and gravesites and the one fish he had left in the pond. very strange place. not sure what else is in the area, however. wifi was free but only available in the dining room. owner restricted hours because he didn't want the users to interfere with the group leader's activities (group leader could have cared less) - another example of control freakiness. Electricity only available from 6 pm - 11 pm so fans didn't work either and room was very hot. why not electicity in the morning? would be nice to be able to get dressed and pack with some light! (He did provide LED lights, however, which was nice)…
Colin and staff were very welcoming. Even rum drinks were gratis. Covid had hit them hard but are spiffing up the place for more active tourism. The casitas were very nice with cross ventilation. The windows had no screens - but good mosquito nets & few mosquitos. Only cold water (typical for the countryside) and plentiful food. The only down-side : Chiggers! We left covered with itchy red welts.
The only thing amiss with our visit to Rock View Lodge was that we only stayed for one night. Our prior schedule had gone awry & our stop here was arranged at short notice. . The Lodge is in Annai , adjacent to the airstrip & yet feels quite remote as you are in the midst of lovely grounds filled with trees & flowers. . The guest accommodation which is in 2 blocks of 4 rooms is extremely comfortable/cosy with all the facilities one would expect & fronted by covered verandahs with chairs & tables. . The sprawling gardens contain a swimming pool, fish ponds, many mature trees, quiet spots to relax & a mound which winds up through thick growth to reach a little circular viewpoint which commands far reaching views over the airstrip & beyond. . Our host, Colin is charming & made us very welcome. He is a mine of information & a great stalwart of the Rupununi region. He has built up Rock View Lodge from a virtually " blank canvas " to the lovely location that it has now become. . Dining takes place communally . The food was top notch & served with much style & panache. . In addition to all the above, Rock View Lodge has it's own small shop & bar which are not only available to guests but serve the local community. . A very pleasant interlude in the evening was an invitation to partake of rum & lime drinks with nibbles upstairs with Colin. . We only had time for an afternoon & early morning Bird watching session in the grounds of Rock View but many excursions are possible including a visit to a Guyanan Cock of the Rock lek. I should imagine there are numerous activities possible as Colin has extensive knowledge of the region. . We saw plenty of Macaws & Parrots in the grounds & some Toucans. . Incidentally, the resident guide, Hendricks is excellent.…
I am extremely thankful to Colin and Andrica as they extended substantial help to me arranging the cost-effective motorcycle rides near Annai in Guyana, even if I did not stay at the lodge. They replied to my emails very fast and was able to find me the lowest cost ride from Annai which is nearby Rock View to Karanambu. When there was a problem (driver did not come), Andrica helped me contact the driver. They were also able to help me find a ride from Karanambu to Lethem, though I did not get to use it due to communication problems. Without their help, my travel in Annai would be a lot more expensive and may encounter a lot of troubles. I hope I could visit the lodge to express my thanks next time.
We spent 3 days and nights in this lodge, 6 of us, and had a wonderful time. The owner, Colin Edwards, greeted us and he and his staff made us very welcome. The Rupununi style of Lodge with individual separate comfortable rooms and a communal Dining/ living area in the middle of nowhere was exactly what we had, with the central lodge a real central meeting place. Delicious food and local rum was very welcome. We loved the swimming pool which was very welcome after our explorations. The Lodge is obviously the center of the community, employing locals with special mention to the super guide Henrik and his wife who was incredibly efficient. A highlight was visiting Henrik's village. sharing Republic Day with the village and a trip up the mountain to Henrik's farm where his wife showed us how to prepare cassava and we saw all the things he grew, cassava, bananas, peppers, corn and much more. We watched cashew nuts being roasted and generally loved being there. Thank you Colin for making our stay so memorable…
This is a special location. Whilst it is looking slightly jaded, Colin and his family make you very welcome. Hendrix the guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We felt at home and relaxed from the moment of our arrival. Food and accommodation were very good. The pre-dinner drinks was a nice touch and we have fallen in love with Rum Swank (Rum and Lime Juice),
This is an excellent Lodge. Whilst it looks a little tired and dated the hospitality and trips from the lodgeb are second to none. The owner, is very much a supporter of the local comunity and is passionate about local people, their crafts, their produce and food. The local wild honey up is the best I've tasted. Lunch and dinner are both based around Amerinduian cuisine. Hendricks is the man who is the star bird spotter and it's well worth going out 9n early morning walks and afternoon bird watching sessions. Staff are helpful, friendly and efficient. .Exdellent host, excellent food and excellent activities. You can fly into and out using the community airstrip (not the owners as previously posted). Indeed local community village is worth a visit.
On arrival at Rockview Lodge, we were greeted by Colin, who could not have been a better, more considerate host. From the moment we arrived, both he, his family and staff took great care of us. The food was excellent, prepared by Andrea and the company of Colin made each meal a delight. Rockview itself is a very beautiful place, with a wonderful viewing platform, whereby you can view the surrounding area and mountains. Our son Daniel had also visited a few years back and had enjoyed this oasis of tranquility in the Savannah, along with the wonderful hospitality. This felt like home from home and we especially loved meeting Colin’s little grandson, Josh. Based on our experience, no journey to Guyana would be complete without a visit to Rockview. We both look forward to returning one day in the future.…
I flew into their private airstrip for a few hours and met the owner Colin, who regaled me, the pilot and guests over lunch with stories of his trips around Africa. Had a quite excellent buffet lunch, and was invited to see the homely accomodation of 2 bed rooms with outside verandas. Rock View is very eco friendly with a wild monkey in the trees and their very own fish farm. I was very impressed by the owner, his staff service and accommodation and flew out wishing I had arranged to stay over in this lovely location. On my next visit to Guyana, I will definitely be back.
Colin has built an oasis at the northern edge of the Rupununi savanna! The Rock View Lodge has a beautiful garden, with the amenities that a familiy (we were travelling with our 3yo daughter) needs, like shady pavillions or a shallow pool. The meals are great local cooking, introducing you to the guyanese and amerindian cuisine. Most of the ingredients are from the local gardens or from the village of Annai. Activities offered at the lodge are thoughtfully tailored to the individual needs and interests. With our young daughter we had leisurely walks in the forest and the savanna. Seeing the wild monkeys climbing above us in the woods was a delight for our daughter! The guides are very knowledgeable locals from the villages nearby. The Rock View Lodge is smartly positioned for further trips into jungle (Iwokrama) or savanna. We will make sure to drop by for a couple of days on our next journey to Guyana!…
