The welcome is lovely: the accommodation modernised and well-designed and GOOD, the position is perfect and the value for money excellent. It is particularly cheerful to wait on the cliff for the baker to arrive to buy fresh fodder for breakfast. Love it.

Il Place is comfortable and clean. Opposite the most beautiful beach on the south coast. Kind welcome. There are also umbrellas and games for the sea. The kitchen is well equipped. All new. Great choice for frangokastello. Opposite the tavern where you eat better than in all of Crete

Once you've made the drive over the mountains (scary at some points), the view of the Libyan Sea greets you. Soon after, you then make out the shape of the ancient castle, which gives the village its name - Frangokastello. My wife and I found Paradisos Apartments by accident, whilst driving around Crete. That was twelve years ago and every year since (bar one) we have returned to this idylic spot on the south coast of Crete, but now with two young children.
Location; A couple of kilometres from Frangokastello castle. Perhaps two hours drive from Chania. The apartments are as close to the sandy and safe beach as you can get, without getting your feet wet! Little to no traffic and situated well off the 'main' road.
Rooms. Clean and simply furnished with everything you need TV (which we've never used), ditto the air-con, ceiling fan (we prefer), kettle, small electric stove, all utensils cutlery etc, fridge/freezer, shower room, inside and balcony table and chairs. Regularly cleaned and given the time spent in them, suit us perfectly. Each low rise apartment has a good sized balcony, ideal for that 'night cap' before bed, or alfresco breakfasts. Tap water is drinkable, with a slight, but pleasant soda taste.
Facilities. Well, if the beach isn't enough in itself!! There is a tarmac, flood-lit tennis court available at no charge to guests, but best played in the cooler evenings or dates more off peak season. A small, unassuming and ever so laid back taverna is a stone's throw from each apartment. Nothing pretentious at all, but good, well cooked, home style food, served with a smile. A childrens play area with swings etc. Bike loan is free, ideal for short periods like trips to the local shops. There is no swimming pool or fitness centre, why would you need them with the beach so close? There is internet connection and access to a lap-top PC within the office.
Night life. Non-existent!! It really is a case of 'bring your own' entertainment. We find that at the end of an evening's meal, we usually end up chatting to the other visitors, who are mostly, German, Austrian, Italian and Greek; many of whom are also return visitors. It's so relaxing to only be disturbed at night by just the sound of crickets in the olive grove or the odd dog barking from a distant house.
Beach. We find the sandy, clean beach provides all we need for a great day. It's ideal for smaller children and less able swimmers, as it slopes gently into the sea - no sudden drop surprises! Never over-crowded, even in peak season and the soft sand is limitless - no rocks or pebbles to contend with. Some advice would be to bring some shading, like a sun brolly or small pop-up tent. There is an (unofficial but tolerated) nudist section, but situated at the very far end of the beach, so the choice is yours!! There are thankfully no sunloungers etc, so you'll also need to bring your own beach towels and other 'comforts'. Although there are steps down to the beach, some older or less able people may find it difficult to access. That said, there is another beach within eay walking distance. Although more accessible, it does have the dreaded rows of sun loungers!
Area. There is little in the way of other outside activities, although a trip to the nearby harbour town of Hora Sfakion makes for a good day out. A visit to other beaches in the area is also worth it, but none match up to the one near Paradisos. About six other tavernas are located within easy walking distance to Paradisos. They are perhaps slightly more 'sophisticated' but a few do enjoy very good reputation; ask other visitors for recommendations.
Downsides. Well, there really aren't many - if a quiet holiday is what you're after. The one thing worthy of mentioning is the Sfakian wind, which can blow for up to two, even three days at a time and non-stop and all along that section of coast. When I say wind, we're talking Scirroco proportions! On the upside of this however, when it does blow, it makes us plan a day out to Plakias, Hora Sfakion, or Kalikratis, the mountain village.
Overall. If a relaxed, peaceful couple or family holiday is your ideal, then this is the place for you. If you love to be loud, dress up in your glad rags and party into the small hours, you'll be very disappointed. The apartments and local area are very safe for younger kids too. One last thing, this small collection of family (Andreas and Katerina) run apartments does a friendly welcome and hospitality that ANY 5 Star hotel would be jealous of. No, I'm not related or have any vested interests in Paradisos Apartments, it just provides us with everything we need and nothing we don't! The only thing we really DON'T LIKE about Paradisos and Frangkastello is the day it comes to leave!

We have spent 9 nights here and the only thing that was wrong was that we had to come home. We stayed in an unmodernised apartment which was superb and for three nights in a modernised apartment, also lovely. High quality through out and lovely ambience

We stayed for a week at Paradisos and Katarina, the owner, was very helpful, courteous and friendly right from the start. The studio is set in an olive grove and Katerina provided us with bottles of home-grown virgin olive oil and wine as a welcome pack. The studio was simple, clean and very comfortable with all the necessary amenities including a good free WiFi connection. The balcony looked into the olive grove with a view of the sea and was very private. The rooms were quiet and pleasantly cool. The cicadas singing in the trees was the only noise. The beach is just a short walk away and is quite sheltered, set in a small bay with headlands at either end. We snorkelled quite a lot around the headland and often virtually had the place to ourselves. We met several other guests who had been coming back regularly for many years. The Paradisos and Fata Morgana Taverna is on your doorstep and is friendly and welcoming with good quality local food at reasonable prices and an excellent view over the bay.

I stayed there in september 2013 the third time. I enjoyed the holidays there every time very much. A lovely, quiet place, the services (bike for free, etc.) are very good and the owners, Katarina and Andreas, are very kind. My parents stayed there many times (two times for some months) and were also very satisfied.

Beautifully decorated apartments in a great surounding right next to the beach. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The kids play area and free bicycles were great for us and the proximity of the beach was also very helpful. The garden around the appartments was very relaxing and the little details added to the enjoyment.
