We stayed here before in 2018 and it was a four star experience, hence our return. In particular the staff had been very friendly and we felt the service was very personal. We didn’t get that this time and the hotel has has gone a bit downhill, but it wasn’t unpleasant, just let down by quite a few service failings. The suites are comfortable - get one on the beach (whether beach facing terrace or beach balcony - which looks over the beach, but doesn’t actually have easy beach access). Those have a large bed in the main living room with a separate twin bedroom, which is ideal for kids. Very comfortable, but not luxurious. Dusk view are lovely. Minibar is free for snacks and soft drinks, but replenishment is spasmodic (maybe every other day?). Kids club is a real highlight. The opening hours, which kids they will take and the activities programmed bear no relation to any published information, but our daughter (3) loved it and it is free for three hours (max) per day. The resort is quite small with only two child-friendly restaurants (plus a pizza restaurant open at lunch which only serves pizza). One of those restaurants is only open for dinner five days a week. Service is a bit hit and miss - long wait for a high chair every time. Wrong orders brought. Good tasty food though, but pretty generic and limited vegetarian options. Five star hotel prices without the full experience. The beach is great - soft sand and very shallow for a good distance out, but not crystal clear. There is supposed to be beach service throughout the day, but we waited hours for even a bottle of water and were only once offered anything more. The pool is also well laid out and we didn’t have any problems getting loungers (nothing like earlier feedback on this point), but there isn’t a separate pool for small children (outside the kids club). Spa was good - plunge pools not available due to COVID and changing rooms adequate, but massage treatment good. We didn’t reserve a transfer (in fact specifically refused one), but one turned up on arrival (we assumed free of charge, but we were charged US$116 for no discernible benefit whatever from an airport taxi at a regulated fixed fare of US$31.). Almost all the guests were from the UK. Like all of them we had an evening flight, so asked for a couple of hours extension on a noon checkout, which was refused because our suite would be occupied that night (presumably an evening arrival, so this seemed like a missed opportunity for goodwill). I wouldn’t say no to coming back, as we had a great holiday, but the hotel is very expensive and for that it feels a bit tired and I expect seamless and personal service we didn’t really get. Just trading off past reputation and not making much effort, which is a shame. We came with kids (during UK school holidays) and almost all guests seemed to be UK based with primary school age children or younger, so probably not ideal for those without children.

The Carlisle Bay in Antigua re-opened on 1st October 2021 - we arrived on the 2nd when there were only 3 people at the hotel. As our vacation continued more and more people arrived and by the date of our departure (after two weeks) the place was full as the UK half term holidays kicked in. The hotel managed it all superbly. Of course there were glitches - there always are - but for the most part it was seamless. Because of Covid we weren’t able to visit other restaurants in Antigua so all our meals were at The Carlisle Bay - luckily they have four separate restaurants so we had sufficient variety - best of all was the Jetty Grill where they served Caribbean food, it was always packed. Brian and his team are to be commended - always pleased to see you and always helpful.
