We visited this camp site and considered to stay overnight. After walking through, we decided against it. This campsite is rundown!! No proper ablution, fireplaces falling apart, surrounding fence broken or non-existent.Rubbish laying around everywhere!.

We spent 1 night here in mid February. We were heading for the falls when we were flagged down by a couple of guys who needed assistance with a 2 wdr. vehicle that was bogged down in some deep sand at Hippo pools campsite. After getting them out they left, and we decided to stay the night. We were the only guests apart from 3 stray dogs. The sites are only marked by a water tap and we were told by the Himba woman at the reception hut that we could camp anywhere. The only facilities are the basic showers and ablutions which are also used by non residents. A couple of cars called in during the evening to use the facilities, and the next morning one of the showers was flooded. Other than that it is a very peaceful site directly on the Kunene river. The falls can be reached by both foot and by car, but while we were there they were almost non existant, just a trickle.

Just for one night is OK but need better management. Ablusion block is new but dirty, not toilet paper, place for fair need reparation . We were only guest there and enjoy nice nature around with fisheagle, kingfisher and milions of quelea roosting in reed. In night we observe genet searching around campsite.

I visited Hippo Pools this year for the second time in my life. It's a Campsite no lawn but right on the edge of the Kunene river. It has a beauty of its own. It's quite primitive but one needs to look at the place in the context of the environment and the fact that it's owned and run by the community. I was happy to be there, it force you somehow into a position where you appreciate what you've got. There are showers and ablution facilities to serve the most basic needs. I had to level the spot for my tent, but realised that this is Africa and not for sessies. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and being so close to nature. The sunset over the Kunene was beautiful with the echoes of the constant call of the Fish Eagle made it priceless. I will go back there again any day.
