I arrived to stay at Secret Garden on May 25 of this year, planning to stay for a couple of nights while I found a longer term spot to stay in Koh Samui for my vacation. I ended up staying all 6 weeks in Secret Garden and can't wait to get back! Note: I'm a seasoned traveler who has been coming to Koh Samui for more than a decade at this point. So I know a few things about the island. I've stayed at resorts that were 3-4x the price of Secret Garden around Bophut, Chaweng, and Lamai, as well as some of the highest end places on the island (Four Seasons and W). Obviously the 20-30k baht per night places are better, but I genuinely think Secret Garden beats all of the 2-5k/night beach resorts around the island for a few reasons. First, the bar/restaurant. As many other reviews have noted, the staff at this resort are all amazing. I'll restate that here. The kitchen staff make some of the best Thai food on the island (all the western dishes were good too, especially the pizzas, but when in Thailand I prefer the local cuisine). I occassinaly eat vegan meals, and they were super accomdating at making vegan pad thai, fried rice, curries, etc. The bar mixes up great cocktails and has a nice selection all around with things like ciders, wine, sangria, etc. Second, it's a relatively small, quiet, and cozy resort (there are only like 10-15 rooms) but it feels a lot bigger. They do live music 3 nights a week with a good mix of local bands and draw a pretty big crowd (probably around 100 people on average) - a mix of locals/expats and people from other resorts in Bang Rak. It's the place to be right now. Over the years of coming here, Bang Rak was never much of a spot to visit. It was a sleep stretch of beach with a few resorts and not much else. That's not the case anymore. There are a lot of great places on the beach to get food/drinks within a short walk (down the beach if you want) of Secret Garden: Chi, Tembo, B. House, The Deck (just opened, can't walk to it from the beach, but it's 5 minutes by bike, just a little ways past B. House). And there are plenty of nice little watering hole bars along the road (not on the beach side). M&M bar is right across the street). And finally, it's a 10 minute motorbike ride into Chaweng, or Choeng Mon, or Fisherman's Village. So it's a nice central area for the main places to go right now on the north side of the island. Third, the rooms are great. I've read some reviews that complain about traffic noise, but I didn't notice it at all. With the A/C and the ceiling fan on, which is a must, the outside noise isn't noticeable, even during the day time when there are people out and about. The bed is incredibly comfortable, way more so than you normally find in Thailand. The bedding is high end and soft, and the room is spacious and nice with a smooth, concrete floor throughout. The overall aesthetic inside the rooms reminded me of some of the high end resorts I've stayed at in Mexico in the past. The rooms also work great with the restaurant as the staff are happy to bring meals/drinks to your room. Fourth, I'd just note the overall atmosphere. It's not a "party resort" by any stretch of the imagination. It's nothing like Ark Bar, for instance. For a few hours, a few nights per week, there is live music, and a decent sized crowd in the restaurant/bar, but it's easy enough to ignore if you don't want to partake. The rest of the time, the resort is quiet/sleepy. Occassionally, a group of the guests will get together and have drinks by the pool, or on someone's porch at the resort, but that's part of the appeal. It's a great resort to meet new friends at and has a very diverse/cool crowd. Throughout my stay I had drinks with an older couple from Scotland, a newlywed couple from Pakistan, and older English gent, a group of Australians, some people my age from Hong Kong, and so on. There were a mix of families, couples, and solo travelers at the resort. Essentially, all people on vacation, in good moods, happy to socialize and make friends. It seems kind of obvious, it being a tourist island and all, but not a lot of resorts really do a good job of being a great social venue, a great restaurant, and a nice relaxing/quiet place to sleep/get things done at. Secret Garden does all this and more, and I can't wait to go back! A big thanks to all of the staff and the managers/owners (John and Johan, both of whom are great guys that have been in Koh Samui a long time, so they have tons of helpful information when it comes to arranging things like boats, jet skis, excursions, restaurants, etc.) I almost forgot to mention, THE BEACH. It's perfect. Soft sand, clear water, gentle waves. it's perfect for swimming (many of the beaches on the island aren't) and laying out, and it's never busy or crowded. Have fun.

Firstly, let me say that ALL the staff here are amazing and we were well taken care of. Unfortunately, since our last visit before Covid, there seems to be a new part owner who has decided to let out some of the bungalows to long term tennants who think it's OK to drink and smoke in the pool the whole day which means nobody else would want to enter as its a very small pool. They also think it's OK to leave the glass bottles at the edge of the pool for the staff to clean up. The food is OK, but not up to the same standards as before Covid. We understand times have been hard but the atmosphere has changed and the famous Sunday night buffet and music has been replaced with music 3 times per week which in our opinion is a bit over the top, and takes the shine off the special Sunday's we once enjoyed a few years ago. The noise was also an issue as there was work staring at 7am until late in afternoon which was right next to our bungalow. As the bungalows have straw rooves you hear everything from the road, the music in the restaurant, the workmen next door and the new so called tennants who get louder the more they drink!. I'm afraid that this once beautiful boutique little resort has become a hang out for the owners pals and its such a shame. With all the new restaurants and other quieter hotels to chose from they need to make some changes and decide if this should stay the beachfront boutique it's once was or let it become a run of the mill average overpriced place on the beach that's lost its charm and character. We missed the original Secret Garden Beach resort we fell in love with 😞

It’s hard to write this review. The property itself is very nice, romantic and has a great atmosphere in store for its guests. The restaurant is lovely, with great food and wonderful service. So why this bad score you ask? Well the bungalow is bad. It’s so much noise it almost feels like you are sleeping in the middle of the main road. The traffic noice is crazy and the constructions work starts at 7am next door. When your neighbour in your connecting bungalow arrives home from clubbing at 3am drunk you hear every single noise he make. I will highly recommend their restaurant, but don’t bother to sleep there. Better options very nearby.

It’s hard to review a property from a positive perspective when you’ve spent most of the time stuck in your room due to monsoonal weather. Of course the resort can’t help this but it does make you view your surrounds differently. Firstly the staff are great, particularly Fah & Ko Ko at reception, housekeeping and the restaurant were attentive too. I stayed in a beachfront bungalow. It was a fantastic size and nicely laid out (albeit needs a freshen up) with huge windows facing the water. The little porch would be lovely in the right conditions but there was no protection from the wind and rain and due to its exposure wasn’t used. The open toilet so close to the restaurant was a little off putting. The restaurant is large, again facing the water and I ate here at least once a day because of the convenience due to weather. The menu was extensive and the food was reasonable, prices need to be updated on their website tho. The location is OK but I didn’t have transport so felt a little isolated although there are restaurants and bars close by. I was told there was live music certain nights of the week and I was there for two of those and if you want a restful night, you won’t get it as you are next to the restaurant and the music is loud! That said, Koh Samui is quiet, really quiet which I thought would be appealing but in all honesty after 3 visits, I’m not sure I would return. It’s expensive to fly in and out and once there, expensive to stay, eat and get around!

This is a resort of around 15 bungalows set around the pool. The bungalows are lovely and kept spotlessly clean and all of the staff are very friendly and helpful. The resort is set on the beach in Bangrak and has a lovely restaurant and live music 3 times a week. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance and you are close to the pier for catching a ferry to the other islands. We will definitely be back

We enjoyed a lovely Friday nite at this lovely spot. Service was initially a bit slow but got better as the nite progressed. A lovely breeze was present the entire evening & we actually went to hear performer Oliver as well as check out the location. Very impressed by his selection, especially The Joker, Living Thing & Down Under. We'll definitely return to hear him again, great voice & skills. We also had a few drinks which were reasonably priced in addition to the Oriental Platter which was quite tasty. Glad we made it.

Really a great find in Bangrak - we keep going back! Very relaxed atmosphere, friendly environment, nice music and delicious food. We have only visited their restaurant & beach club - that said, the adjacent accommodation seems to be very nice.

Stayed here three nights as part of a COVID Era road trip. Overall, I will give the property and staff five out of five, particularly considering the current price. The property is lovely and the staff are so nice and laid back, I could have easily stayed here longer. The bar restaurant area is beautifully appointed and stylish. Never tried the food but the beer was always ice cold 🍻. I chose one of the less expensive bungalows away from the pool as I figured it would be more quiet and have a bit more privacy. The room itself was large and comfortable and would be perfect for a long term stay. However, the bathroom was pretty average and could use some maintenance. Suggest the owners refinish the floors 😉 If I were just rating the property on the basis of the accommodations, I would give it a 3.5 out of five. Would stay here again for sure 👍👍👍

On the ferry over from Koh Phangan we were recommended Secret Garden and it did not disappoint. Our room was basic and comfortable, the pool and surrounds nice, staff very helpful. What was awesome was the food in the restaurant. We ate here 2 out of our 3 nights, they are closed on Mondays, and had breakfast twice. Avocado on toast with poached egg was great as were the omelettes. The Asian platter which consisted of chicken satay, spring rolls, fish cakes and the money bags is highly recommended. Both Thai and western menus had great yummy options. We will come back here.
