Lovely hotel and staff. The room was fantastic! Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was good. On-site shopping was excellent! The only criticism is, we feel the hotel was understaffed, particularly in the restaurant. Otherwise, a lovely stay. .

The hotel is right on the beach and has a good pool area with plenty of sun-loungers both round the pool and on the beach. While I was there the sea was very choppy so not suitable for small children and I understand this is often the case in that area. The pool bar serves snacks and drinks but is clearly a "family" area. The main bar next to the lobby was comfortable and the service and drinks there were excellent. It was not "all inclusive" but had reasonable prices. The rooms are built in two wings enclosing some very nice, well maintained gardens. Everything was clean and well maintained. Rooms are spacious with plenty of seating and lots of hot water. I went out of season so it was very quiet (which I loved). The staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful and special mention must be made of the man in the shop who seemed to have endless time to help everyone.

It was our second visit to this hotel. It is the largest hotel in the area, situated on the beach with a spacious pool area and pool bar situated above beach level. Ample sunloungers and other facilites are provided here and on the beach. The location of rooms is very varied all in a setting of beautifully kept gardens. Some rooms have garden view and a few have sea view however the location of some of these might be a bit noisy. We had one of the side sea view rooms roughly in the centre section of the hotel which was very pleasant with it's own balcony where you could sit and relax, eat or read. The entire hotel is pefectly maintained, everything works and an army of cleaners keep it perfectly clean. It might be a good idea to avoid rooms on the lowest level throughout the hotel unless you are not too fussed about light levels. This is because, although when the hotel was built they may have been much the same as rooms on the higher levels from a light point of view, The growth of plants in the nearby gardens seems to shade some of the rooms. Next to our room block was a well stocked shop with very friendly staff selling just about everything you are likely to need and at reasonable prices. The room was spacious and comfortable with tbe exception of the bed, basically just a wooden board topped with a very hard mattress and it creaked whenever you moved. Definitely NOT four star standard. They seem to be the same throughout the hotel. They are not acceptable and must be changed. If this hotel was a premier inn in the UK with these beds they would be obliged to refund the entire cost of your stay under their guaranteed good night's sleep policy. Almost without exception the staff were efficient, polite and extremely helpful. The hotel owner apparently lives on site and can often be seen patrolling the grounds. He does not seem to interfere in tbe running of the hotel as far as the guests are concerned. The pleasantly situated Restaurant is well run and the variety of food on offer at dinner is good and varies from day to day. The standard of food is good but not of a four star or even three star hotel level, more like a good quality self service cafeteria. There is no a la carte menu so if you fancy a nice steak you are out of luck. So now we come to to the anomaly of the breakfast buffet. Again the food is not up to three or four star quailty. There is plenty of choice though. The meat and cheese of the continental breakfast are poor quality but the pastries, bread and cakes are good. Fruit is available but not a great variety. The cereals are very poor, an attempt at do it yourself muesli by providing oats, raisins and dates, no nuts or other dried fruits. Very poor and soggy cornflakes, puffed wheat and a few others, nothing crisp but soggy. A vat of so called "Quaker", supposedly porridge but not cooked at all. Just raw oats swimming in warm milk. Cooked food variable but mostly poor. Omelets and fried eggs can be cooked to order. Now we come to the unbelievable saga of the boiled eggs. There were two trays of eggs labelled 5 minutes and 8 minutes. This doesn't even make sense because if they were really boiled for 5 minutes they would be hard so what would be the point of having two trays? Every day for about three days I tried the 5 minute ones but couldn't eat them because the were completely raw. When my wife tried one it was so raw it splashed up all over her. I complained to the waiter. Nothing happened. I complained to reception who contacted the restaurant. Next day they were perfect. Next day they were hard. Next day they were raw. Neither the head waiter, the restaurant manager or the general manager was apparently capable of getting the restaurant to cook a properly soft boiled egg. The attitude of the general manager I found offensive and disrespectful. She blamed me for having special requirements for the eggs as if most normal people like them randomly raw or hard boiled. We then come to the day before leaving when a note was put under our door asking us to pay our bill. The day before?? When I went to pay I found they had taken full payment for our stay three days before we left the UK without informing us and without giving us a receipt. This is apalling disrespectful and insulting behaviour and totally unacceptable. The pre-authorisation of the credit card to secure the booking should not have been used to take payment without our authorisation. I will be writing to the owner of the hotel to complain. Even though despite the problems which were relatively minor, we had a very enjoyable two weeks, the apparent incompetence and disrespectfulness of the general manager and her immediate deputies in reception mean we will be unlikely to return unless there is a change of management.

It was our second visit to Hydramis Palace, Georgioupolis, which is situated on the beach a short walk from Kavros where there are shops, including a supermarket. Chania and Rethymno are easily reached on good public transport. The hotel is very well built, surrounded by delightful well tended gardens. It has two pools, one for children, a pool bar and plenty of sun beds around the pools and on the beach below. The sea offers fine swimming without any noisy water sports. There is an excellent shop open until 11pm. with helpful staff. A major feature of the hotel is the staff, almost without exception friendly, hardworking and helpful. The roomy bedrooms and all public areas are washed every day and the hotel is very clean. The pleasantly situated restaurant serves varied, well cooked dinners with choice of fine Cretan wines which may be purchased. Some of the food on offer for breakfast could have been of better quality but was mostly good. Unfortunately the chefs seemed unable to cook soft boiled eggs. Mostly they were raw with the white completely runny. Sometimes they were hard, and only on three occasions out of 14 days were they properly cooked. There was music entertainment in the pool bar each evening which included Greek dancing. The main bar was particularly pleasant. One serious problem was that the beds were very hard and squeaky. The mattresses should be replaced urgently. I was helped by a member of staff who requested a topper for my bad back. We discovered on the last morning that full payment for our stay had been taken from our credit card THREE DAYS BEFORE WE LEFT THE UK! A new manager had been appointed in April and we can only think that it was her decision to do this. We were not informed or asked and it was a total shock. This manager had not impressed us with her inability to deal with the cooking of the eggs problem and her irrelevant replies to reviews on Tripadvisor. A marvellous fortnight but two major problems.

Dear guest, We would like to thank you for taking the time to share your kind review on trip advisor, after your recent stay with us. Although, it has been a great pleasure to learn that you found our rooms comfortable and the staff very good we surprised to learn that you found our menu repetitive, since we have gained a great number of praises for our food quality and the great selection, as well. Nevertheless, all our guests comments are taken seriously since they help us to become better and improve our services. Looking forward to welcoming you once again in our premises Best regards Katerina Stefanoudaki Hotel Manager
