We just finished a stay at this hidden gem, and our only regret was not stayiong longer. El Caribeo and the Owners Romano, Clement and Camille provide an experience that strikes the perfect balance between staying with dear friends and a luxury eco-resort. A ten minute boat ride (easily arranged for you by the staff) from the busy and noisy Bocas Town, El Caribeo is a waterfront paradise on secluded Isla Cristobol. This is a place to relax, unwind and put yourselves in the hands of your hosts who live onsite and rent only two small cabanas two those wishing to share their little corner of paradise. Let Camille cook all your meals, she is a fabulous chef and the food is amazing! Your hosts will share a drink and some very entertaining and informative conversation with you while you enjoy appetizers by the pool, after which you will be served your entrees and dessert at a table on the covered deck overlooking the Caribbean Sea. After dinner play some darts and enjoy a drink while listening to some great music from Roman's eclectic collection. Make sure to let your hosts arrange a tour of their gardens, the source of ingredients for your meals, infused soaps and oils and even some local spirits. Clement and Roman took us for an outing by boat to a nearby bay to view dolphins, which is not to be missed, and later we were invited back on the boat for an impromptu night time look at the bioluminescent creatures that inhabit the bay just off the dock. Another day, simply stepping off the private dock gave us access to a wonderful snorkeling reef full of sea life just steps from our little cabana. We just can't say enough about El Caribeo. Keep in mind, this property is off grid and very eco-friendly. Don't plan on bringing your hairdryer and curling iron, but do plan on having an experience that you will remember for a lifetime, and making some wonderful new friends as well.

This little peace of heaven is a truly hidden gem. The Frech owners built El Caribeo from scratch and you can feel they are in it with all their heart. One of the most relaxing and memorable stays ever. In preparation of our stay Clement was super quick on email and whatsapp to ensure a smooth arrival and stay. Our extraordinary experience started in Panama Airport already, when we were in touch with Romain who would pick us up in Bocas Town, to update him on the flight delay and to receive his photo for easy recognition. We met at the airport and went to the boat that would take us to El Caribeo on San Cristobal Island in about 15-20minutes. The bungalow we have booked is located next to the main house, to keep your privacy. Size wise absolutely comfortable with efficient storage facility for clothes and personal belongings. El Caribeo has a pool and social area with lounge furniture and restaurant style - set up in front of the house to relax during the day and to have your meals there. We highly advise to opt for dinner and / or lunch to let Camille spoil you with her cooking skills. Breakfast with delicious coffee, fruits, eggs and pancakes is already included to start the day right. Filtered water is available at all times. An additional plus of this eco lodge are the animals, which we felt in love with. The fluffy, lazy cat Moumou, playful female dog Pampa and attentive Mr. Django - all three different and adorable characters. Sorry for not mentioning the chicken’s name, but this one was rather shy and didn’t spend much time with us. There was no need to pre-plan any tours as Romain and Clement can arrange everything on the spot. Our water taxi Marco was on time every day and provided safe and flexible day trips to the neighboring islands. Without any travel, you can take the garden tour followed by degustation of the fresh fruits. During the 90minute walk, Roman or Clement will explain to you the different fruits, herbs and trees that grown on their land. Once climbed the little hill behind the house, a stunning view over the jungle is offered. We really didn’t want to leave this place, the island life is a wonderful one, and we recommend everyone traveling to Bocas del Toro to check availability with El Caribeo and to stay as long as possible.

My husband and I stayed at El Caribeo for 4 nights the second week in October. We had excellent weather while there. The view from the main house and pool is stunning. The garden and surroundings are so beautiful. The tent is comfortable and has places to put your clothes. Its very quiet and great for sleeping. The bathroom is excellent. Clean and beautiful. They have shampoo and shower gel to use. The hot water is ready instantly! They have done a superb job at designing the buildings. They have done everything themselves and it looks very professional. Camille is an excellent cook. She always thought of the little things that make a place special. She gave us these excellent banana, chocolate, oat cookies while we were waiting for a taxi or some fruit from their garden to take with us. Also, a glass bottle of water was left out every morning for us. This was essential. Their water was excellent tasting and they always had a cold glass bottle for us. She accomodated our vegan diet and Camille makes a wonderful breakfast. We also had an excellent salad at lunch with green papaya and a light dressing, it was delicious. We loved playing with their dogs, Pampa and Jungle, and tried to win the affection of Moo-Moo the cat. They are sweet animals and great additions to their resort. They also have chickens running around, which we loved. We saw several hummingbirds and there are sloths, but unfortunately we didn't get to see any. Everyone at El Caribeo is very gracious. They know French and Spanish. We should have learned more Spanish before going, but they also knew a good deal of English, so it wasn't a problem. Everyone in the tourism industry, just about, knows enough English to make a transaction, but I recommend knowing as much Spanish as you can. We knew we would have to take taxi's everywhere, but we thought they would be only a few dollars. None of the drivers in town knew where El Caribeo was and San Cristobal isn't very populated with resorts, so they don't want to take the time to drive there without getting to pick someone else up or go somewhere along the way (this is what the taxi drivers told us). A taxi ride for two one way is $10 a person. So, a ride in for us was $20 and a ride back, depending on the time of day was $20. Not to mention going to other islands during the day, which are usually less ($5 per person), but it all adds up. That is the best deal we could find, but you can try to get less, they are all willing to haggle. If its later in the day its more and night is even more. If you have more people on the boat you can talk the price down. There is a lot to see and do spread out on all the islands, so taxi's are essential. Also, the Zapatilla tour is cheaper in town than at the resort and its the same tour. Bring Cash. A lot of places only take cash, US dollar. All in all we had a wonderful adventure and enjoyed every minute of it. We recommend staying at El Caribeo if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bocas Town and relax by the pool. They also have kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkeling gear for rent. It is a beautiful, peaceful place. I wish I could live there!

My friend Naomi and I spent one night at El caribeo to recover from several weeks of busy working life. We could not have chosen a better place than this little piece of paradise! The entire team of El caribeo are welcoming, very kind and well-deserved proud of the place they have build up with their very own hands. The team seems to naturally understand what it is that you would need to fully enjoy your stay and gives you all desired privacy. The accommodation is perfectly clean, every detail is taken care of and Camille's delicious meals make you want to stay forever! Thank you El caribeo for making us feel reborn!
