My husband and I booked a stay at this hotel. I had been given a $400 gift card for the resort by friends. Due to Covid, we were unable to use the gift card, until we felt it was safe to do so. We live in Vancouver and the hotel is in Victoria, on Vancouver Island, and travel restrictions had us put off our use of the gift card for a couple of years. We enjoyed our stay and upon check out, where I presented our gift card that has the name "Bear Mtn. Resort Community" on the front, was told that we were unable to use it. Apparently, the hotel and the golf course had split and the golf course had taken responsibility for the gift cards. After discussing the issue with the manager on duty, who was unwilling to do anything, I was directed to email the Director of Rooms, Nader Albert. He also confirmed that there was nothing he could do and directed me to contact Rob Larocque at the Pro Shop. After repeated calls and emails that were both sent from myself and Nader, I had zero response to my concern form Mr. Larocque. Our gift card was valid and in the name of the hotel. For them to refuse to accept it, is unacceptable. We stayed there, because of the gift card. We are beyond frustrated and extremely disappointed in Marriot and have chosen, not only to not stay at this property again, because of another recent issue with this company, we will no longer be staying at any Marriot property in the future.

Response from Leaders Front Office, Guest Services / Front Office at The Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort & Spa, Victoria
Responded 1 week ago
Dear kellys887, Greetings from The Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort & Spa, Victoria! I do wish this reply was under better circumstances, unfortunately, the hotel has seen a lot of changes in the year since last you stayed, let alone since "Bear Mtn. Resort Community" was a thing. The team you had dealt with upon departure is no longer with us, however the information provided to you at the time remains the same. We are, to this day, still clarifying with guests who enquire about using gift cards whether they are in possessions of ones which are explicitly Marriott and/or Westin branded, as these are the only types that are valid. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20 but at this time I can only ask if at any point you checked with the team PRIOR to presenting the gift card upon departure, as they were well aware those cards could not be accepted at the hotel, but rather only at the Golf Shop and their facilities, and would have communicated the same, as we do even today. It is unfortunate that this experience has detracted you from Marriott as a brand, as well as our location in general, but if there is anything else I can do, please do not hesitate to reach us directly at reception@westinbearmountain.com Best Wishes, Daniel D'Mello Manager on Duty

Hotel's Favorite
Having waited too long to book something along the west coast, we found the Westin Bear Mountain Resort in Langford. It was an ideal location to access both the west and east parts of Vancouver Island as well as easy access into Victoria. We booked a one bedroom suite with a full kitchen. When we opened the door and walked in, what we found was a hotel room 50% larger than my first apartment. This suite was HUGE. You could have fit a small bed into the foyer area itself. If you were looking to host a small party with 20+ people, this is your space. The bedroom was as large as the living space. Seriously - you could have fit three king size beds in there with room to spare. Two walk in closets and a bathroom equally as large with a tub and a shower. Our suite on the top floor also had a massive patio (which would easily accommodate said 20 people if they wanted to go outside) with a nice view of the grounds. There was a second half bath by the front door which was convenient. Needless to say, the suite was more than enough for our family of 3. Our kid slept on the pull-out sofa and we didn't miss the space whatsoever. Very comfortable accommodations. We were there for a week and it felt like home. We had a full kitchen, which served it's purpose but also had a downside - more later. The a/c in our room never seemed to work. When we inquired about it, their solution was to give us a floor fan. Because we had a full kitchen, we only ate in the restaurant once. The food was average but the views and setup were spectacular with a retractable roof giving you a full view of the mountains and golf course. There are also two restaurants in the building beside the hotel which seemed popular. The area is fairly isolated which was great for quietness. Just about every shop you could imagine could be found 10min away in Langford. Downsides: The kitchen: I don't expect a lot in a hotel kitchen but this was ridiculous. I don't know if people have been stealing stuff but what we had was less than basic. One small bowl, one oven mitt, one tea towel, one big pot, one small pot, one frying pan. That was it. I had to use a pot as a roasting pan because we didn't have one! Minimal utensils and the barest of bare for dishes and cutlery. People usually get a full kitchen so they can cook meals to save money. In this case, the kitchen was good for making cold breakfasts... Lack of a pool or even a hot tub (maybe the spa had one?). There's one next door that belongs to the community but it's very expensive (I think it was $40/day). Also no laundry facilities (we found a laundromat in Langford). Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again. A quality hotel and I will know to pack a full kitchen next time. Tip: If you want to save on parking (which there was always room available), boatloads of free parking can be found about 100-200m away if you don't mind walking.

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the rooms and beds are super comfortable. We stay there every summer and really miss the pool and the laundry facilities. You can now go to the pool and gym beside the hotel for a fee ($45 for a day, $100 for 3 days or $150 for 5 days). The rooms with full kitchens also seem to have less and less supplies available, but generally have everything you need. The restaurant and conference renovations are very modern and so many different, comfy and unique chairs! Assuming they will be renovating the lobby area to match the rest of the renovations. The coffee shop nearby is great with some basic grocery items if you need them for your room. Overall, it's always a great stay. Please bring back the laundry facilities for guests!

We lived in Bear Mountain at one time and were familiar with the property, but we had not been a guest there before. There has been a recent remodel of the resort and so far the upgrades have been a nice improvement. It is more modern than before, open and bright. There is still one restaurant in the process of opening, but the current one provided good service and a nice selection of food. The grounds are lovely and the setting is quiet. Unfortunately, there is nearby construction that can be annoying at times, but it is temporary and not the fault of the hotel. They do stop working by 3:00, and the sound is only a slight problem when sitting outdoors, not inside the hotel. Everyone from the front desk staff to the valet was helpful and friendly. We had some issues in our suite, but every effort was made to deal with them. In our view, issues are inevitable when traveling, it is how the staff deals with issues that can be most important. We are especially grateful to manager Kristina Alexander for taking care of things for us, and for making our stay extra special. She went above and beyond to help us with the difficulties we were having. We will certainly be back and we appreciate all of the efforts made to make our stay memorable.

Let me start off by saying that as an Ambassador Elite member for 20 years & counting, this hotel stands out in so many ways as an exceptional hotel, in a spectacular environment with amazing staff and absolutely deeeelisssshhh food on their menu! Let me also add that the renovations in the lobby lounge/restaurant are sooo beautiful and of course being on the golf course makes it a resoundingly awesome hotel to stay at whenever you’re thinking of being anywhere in Victoria or southern Vancouver Island. I need to give a shout out to several staff members to exceeded my expectations in such an amazing way that without question I will always go back to this property whenever I’m in the area: Nader, Daniel, Deniz and Sarah at the front desk/office were so incredibly focused on exceeding my expectations,, had wonderful positive energy, engaged in fun banter and followed up always to ensure I was happy… which of course I was! Mark at the front desk stood out as a manager absolutely committed on every way to ensuring our experience was nothing short of spectacular. His friendliness and support in finding a lost pair of glasses (which he found) was so over the top nice and most appreciated. On a final note, a big shout out to Chloe and Savannah at the lounge restaurant for also being so nice. The eggs Benedict we had were without question the absolute most delicious breakfast we had in years and so look forward to our next visit for dinner and breakfast at this amazing restaurant! Thumbs up to the chefs! Folks, without question this is an amazing property that I encourage and urge you to try as I am 100% certain you will absolutely have the best time ever! It’s perfect for family, friends and business in every way!

First of all they could not find us in their system when we went to check in even though we had pre-booked. Took some searches of our electronic devices to obtain the confirmation. Then we discovered there was no ice available when at the room Upon checking out we received and additionally $25 for ‘self parking’…..no indication of this anywhere in their website that I could find. Nice hotel but this was a sour experience to our wedding night and we won’t be back.

My family booked a two-bedroom suite, and two regular rooms. When we arrived, my mom checked in and requested the rooms that are facing a particular view (the golf course, if I'm not mistaken). She was assured by the front desk that the rooms would be facing her preferred view, but when she arrived at her room, it wasn't what she wanted. She had to make a request for a room transfer right after and was able to stay in the room with a better view. We appreciated the thoughtful Christmas gifts -- Mandarins in Christmas stockings, and an oversized muffin. The muffin didn't taste good. No wonder our next door neighbour only had a slice of it and left the entire thing on their doorstep. The Mandarins and stockings were a nice touch. After checking out, the front desk gave my 5 year old son two macarons in a box and her business card. While we appreciate the gesture, not all children can eat sugar. Some have sugar sensitivity which will result to hyperactivity and behavioural problems in the next few hours after sugar is consumed. On top of that, some kids have trouble sleeping at night because of the sugar. In the future, it's best for the staff to ask permission from a child's parents if it's okay to give something to a child. This tiny gift accidentally cracked while we were in the car and it resulted in a 40-minute tantrum in our car on the way to the ferry terminal. Macarons aren't the ideal gift for kids. They're too delicate. Without the macarons, my son was already happy enough to receive the business card. He held it up to let me see and was excited to call the staff using the card. Gifts to children do not have to be candies, chocolates, etc. that are laden with sugar. Please be more creative and considerate next time.

Like much of the rest of the world my wife and I had been without a vacation for some time. While we would normally take a winter trip South, we were forced to look within Canada for another option due to covid regulations. After some research we decided to try Vancouver Island. As an avid golfer, I wanted a place that would give me a chance to play. I was thoroughly impressed by our experience at the Westin Bear Mountain. As a Marriott Bonvoy gold member I was upgraded to a top floor room with an amazing view of the surrounding landscape. My wife and I were sold on this property the minute we stepped out onto our balcony. Everyone we spoke to was very friendly and accommodating. The front desk staff especially were great and happy to help in any way. I can't fathom how anyone would take issue with the service at this property. You're either too demanding or maybe a bad attitude doesn't get you the same positive feedback. The rooms were super clean and comfortable. Very nice size and we loved having a balcony. As I said, the views are amazing and we loved every minute. There were sanitizing stations all over the place and everyone was following covid protocols. We felt very safe and appreciated the cleanliness of the hotel. Some things to be aware of so that your expectations aren't unrealistic. We are still in the midst of a pandemic, so of course some services/things will be limited. You have to book your time in the hot tub to limit the people so you should book that well in advance. Dining options are also a bit limited so either be prepared for a smaller menu or order from someplace like Skipthedishes. You also have to request your room to be cleaned in advance. This is common sense, it's surprising people actually complain about this. It can be annoying sure, but it is the reality we find ourselves in. When the pandemic is over I'm sure we will be back to normal procedure. Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Westin bear Mountain and would certainly return. Please be realistic. We are still in a pandemic and not everything will be available as we are accustomed to. When the resort is back to normal operations following this, I can't imagine how great it would be. We had a fabulous time despite any limitations. The service is excellent, it's clean and the setting is beautiful. Thank you to the staff for your hard work in challenging times and we look forward to a return in the near future.

Having not had a vacation or any time away since Covid began, my wife and I decided to book a bed and breakfast here on Vancouver Island. Unfortunately the hot tub which is always a deciding factor in going to a place because we love getting in and out all day, broke down the first day there and the host graciously allowed to book out as the hot tub wouldn't be fixed until a few days later. After phoning around last minute to find a place that wasn't booked up we phoned the Westin Bear Mountain resort and Spa. First question to the reservation booking agent was do you have a hot tub and is it working. The answer Yes we do and yes it is. Somehow though after taking our information and seeing if we could possibly book in early the agent put us on hold. Within a few minutes our call was dropped. We phoned back and got another agent asked again about the hot tub and got the same answer YES, So book in for 2 days we did. After packing up everything including all the food we brought for the bed and breakfast we arrived at the hotel at 4 booked in, unpacked everything again as we booked a 1 bedroom suite with a full kitchen. It was a pretty beautiful room all said and done for $360 a night. After unpacking we began to get ready and phoned the concierge to find out where the hot tub was and found out that the swimming pool and the hot tub were in another building that had been bought by some investor and the building closed down 2 years ago. The guests now had to use a little Mineral pool at the spa in the hotel and you could only book in for a half hour and only once a day.!! To say the least extreme disappointment that what we were told and what was actually available were two different things. The concierge was kind enough to allow us to book in for a full hour. Not great but at least something. We went down and got into the little tiny pool. There was a fountain in the middle of the pool that regardless of where you sit you have water splashing in your face, and the temperature of the pool was 95 degrees!! Lukewarm at best and almost cold, we staying in for about 15 mins until we were shivering and left. I went to the reception and asked for the emails of the CEO and VP of Operations for Westins as I work in the service industry and when you're told something is available and then find out it isn't and that the amenities closed down 2 years before, there is obviously a serious disconnect between corporate, reservations and the hotels themselves. To be fair and in defense of the hotel staff, GM and others, they tried to make our stay that night a good one. The GM Noel sent up a bottle of champaign and a charcuterie board. It was appreciated but unfortunately when you're paying the price we did for a beautiful suite and pretty much the only thing you can do is play cards or watch tv, We can stay at home and do those things without paying for that. All said and done we ended up cancelling our booking for the second day and went home. I would like to thank the staff at the hotel, and even the Manager on duty Judith in letting us know that in a year and a half to 2 years their infinite pool and 2 hot tubs will be completed then and for us to book in and receive a family and friends discount. There was little done to comp us for the room though and it has a left us with a bad taste all the way around. Those on the corporate level really need to be doing their jobs to ensure that things that have been done 2 years previous are sent to reservations agents appropriately! To be very honest if I promised something to my clients and then when doing the work changed what was to be provided I wouldn't be in business very long. Again to the defense of the hotel, some of the guests we spoke to said that they did receive a memo via email of the fact that the hot tub and pool were closed and what was available, being that we booked in short notice we weren't supplied with that information and would have made a decision not to book in at that time and continue looking for a place that did. Knowledge is power and we weren't provided with that knowledge unfortunately. Thus the title of this review "Ask the Right Questions" and maybe talk with the hotel concierge before booking into a place. Jay Hinton
