My family booked a two-bedroom suite, and two regular rooms. When we arrived, my mom checked in and requested the rooms that are facing a particular view (the golf course, if I'm not mistaken). She was assured by the front desk that the rooms would be facing her preferred view, but when she arrived at her room, it wasn't what she wanted. She had to make a request for a room transfer right after and was able to stay in the room with a better view. We appreciated the thoughtful Christmas gifts -- Mandarins in Christmas stockings, and an oversized muffin. The muffin didn't taste good. No wonder our next door neighbour only had a slice of it and left the entire thing on their doorstep. The Mandarins and stockings were a nice touch. After checking out, the front desk gave my 5 year old son two macarons in a box and her business card. While we appreciate the gesture, not all children can eat sugar. Some have sugar sensitivity which will result to hyperactivity and behavioural problems in the next few hours after sugar is consumed. On top of that, some kids have trouble sleeping at night because of the sugar. In the future, it's best for the staff to ask permission from a child's parents if it's okay to give something to a child. This tiny gift accidentally cracked while we were in the car and it resulted in a 40-minute tantrum in our car on the way to the ferry terminal. Macarons aren't the ideal gift for kids. They're too delicate. Without the macarons, my son was already happy enough to receive the business card. He held it up to let me see and was excited to call the staff using the card. Gifts to children do not have to be candies, chocolates, etc. that are laden with sugar. Please be more creative and considerate next time.

Like much of the rest of the world my wife and I had been without a vacation for some time. While we would normally take a winter trip South, we were forced to look within Canada for another option due to covid regulations. After some research we decided to try Vancouver Island. As an avid golfer, I wanted a place that would give me a chance to play. I was thoroughly impressed by our experience at the Westin Bear Mountain. As a Marriott Bonvoy gold member I was upgraded to a top floor room with an amazing view of the surrounding landscape. My wife and I were sold on this property the minute we stepped out onto our balcony. Everyone we spoke to was very friendly and accommodating. The front desk staff especially were great and happy to help in any way. I can't fathom how anyone would take issue with the service at this property. You're either too demanding or maybe a bad attitude doesn't get you the same positive feedback. The rooms were super clean and comfortable. Very nice size and we loved having a balcony. As I said, the views are amazing and we loved every minute. There were sanitizing stations all over the place and everyone was following covid protocols. We felt very safe and appreciated the cleanliness of the hotel. Some things to be aware of so that your expectations aren't unrealistic. We are still in the midst of a pandemic, so of course some services/things will be limited. You have to book your time in the hot tub to limit the people so you should book that well in advance. Dining options are also a bit limited so either be prepared for a smaller menu or order from someplace like Skipthedishes. You also have to request your room to be cleaned in advance. This is common sense, it's surprising people actually complain about this. It can be annoying sure, but it is the reality we find ourselves in. When the pandemic is over I'm sure we will be back to normal procedure. Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Westin bear Mountain and would certainly return. Please be realistic. We are still in a pandemic and not everything will be available as we are accustomed to. When the resort is back to normal operations following this, I can't imagine how great it would be. We had a fabulous time despite any limitations. The service is excellent, it's clean and the setting is beautiful. Thank you to the staff for your hard work in challenging times and we look forward to a return in the near future.

Having not had a vacation or any time away since Covid began, my wife and I decided to book a bed and breakfast here on Vancouver Island. Unfortunately the hot tub which is always a deciding factor in going to a place because we love getting in and out all day, broke down the first day there and the host graciously allowed to book out as the hot tub wouldn't be fixed until a few days later. After phoning around last minute to find a place that wasn't booked up we phoned the Westin Bear Mountain resort and Spa. First question to the reservation booking agent was do you have a hot tub and is it working. The answer Yes we do and yes it is. Somehow though after taking our information and seeing if we could possibly book in early the agent put us on hold. Within a few minutes our call was dropped. We phoned back and got another agent asked again about the hot tub and got the same answer YES, So book in for 2 days we did. After packing up everything including all the food we brought for the bed and breakfast we arrived at the hotel at 4 booked in, unpacked everything again as we booked a 1 bedroom suite with a full kitchen. It was a pretty beautiful room all said and done for $360 a night. After unpacking we began to get ready and phoned the concierge to find out where the hot tub was and found out that the swimming pool and the hot tub were in another building that had been bought by some investor and the building closed down 2 years ago. The guests now had to use a little Mineral pool at the spa in the hotel and you could only book in for a half hour and only once a day.!! To say the least extreme disappointment that what we were told and what was actually available were two different things. The concierge was kind enough to allow us to book in for a full hour. Not great but at least something. We went down and got into the little tiny pool. There was a fountain in the middle of the pool that regardless of where you sit you have water splashing in your face, and the temperature of the pool was 95 degrees!! Lukewarm at best and almost cold, we staying in for about 15 mins until we were shivering and left. I went to the reception and asked for the emails of the CEO and VP of Operations for Westins as I work in the service industry and when you're told something is available and then find out it isn't and that the amenities closed down 2 years before, there is obviously a serious disconnect between corporate, reservations and the hotels themselves. To be fair and in defense of the hotel staff, GM and others, they tried to make our stay that night a good one. The GM Noel sent up a bottle of champaign and a charcuterie board. It was appreciated but unfortunately when you're paying the price we did for a beautiful suite and pretty much the only thing you can do is play cards or watch tv, We can stay at home and do those things without paying for that. All said and done we ended up cancelling our booking for the second day and went home. I would like to thank the staff at the hotel, and even the Manager on duty Judith in letting us know that in a year and a half to 2 years their infinite pool and 2 hot tubs will be completed then and for us to book in and receive a family and friends discount. There was little done to comp us for the room though and it has a left us with a bad taste all the way around. Those on the corporate level really need to be doing their jobs to ensure that things that have been done 2 years previous are sent to reservations agents appropriately! To be very honest if I promised something to my clients and then when doing the work changed what was to be provided I wouldn't be in business very long. Again to the defense of the hotel, some of the guests we spoke to said that they did receive a memo via email of the fact that the hot tub and pool were closed and what was available, being that we booked in short notice we weren't supplied with that information and would have made a decision not to book in at that time and continue looking for a place that did. Knowledge is power and we weren't provided with that knowledge unfortunately. Thus the title of this review "Ask the Right Questions" and maybe talk with the hotel concierge before booking into a place. Jay Hinton

This is a beautiful and modern hotel. I felt so comfortable. We stayed here for 3 days with a complete services, bellboy and valet parking attendant are super friendly and helpful. front desk staff are very nice, over all this hotel is very clean with all brand new furniture and appliances. It's modern all over from inside to outside. Our unit was very large, the bedroom is separate from the living room.

My new wife and I booked the penthouse suite in your Bear Mountain location for the night before and of our wedding on September 4-6 2021. We had been very much looking forward to celebrating our wedding at your location as we have always thought it was beautiful and the service we received when booking the suite was exceptional. However our actual stay, and overall experience, could not be described as such. We were very upfront as to the occasion and reason for our stay when we booked the suite through the group/events planner Christina several months ago and we discussed with her our desire to hold a small gathering of people in the suite the night before the wedding as our Rehearsal dinner - my wife had attended a rehearsal dinner in this suite several years prior and really enjoyed the experience. We expressed concerns with this idea as we wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any issues but were assured that it would be an amazing location by the multiple employees we spoke to over the course of a couple viewings so we agreed to proceed with booking. We even considered booking a block of rooms for our wedding guests, but after the experience we had we are very thankful that we did not proceed with the group room booking. Less than 30 minutes after checking in at roughly 430 pm we received a noise complaint, which in our opinion was completely ridiculous as there were 3 people in the room speaking to one another and not making excessive noise whatsoever. Over the course of the evening there were approx. 15 people in the room for our wedding rehearsal (almost entirely family and a couple close friends in the bridal party). Several of these guests work in the customer service industry on Vancouver Island and hold management/business owner positions and were extremely disgusted at the way we were treated. As such many of them will no longer choose to stay at Bear Mountain and will not be recommending it to their friends or business associates. Our dinner started at 615pm and ran no later then 815pm as we had a big day the following day and every one needed an early night. Around 6:45pm we received a visit from the manager on duty that night whose professionalism was completely unnaceptble. My now wife (aka the bride who is also PREGNANT) answered the door to this man who proceeded to tell her that she was breaking the law (COVID restrictions) and that the room was not meant for functions and that the police would be involved. He forced her to sign a "tranquility agreement" which, contrary to what he said, indicated that quiet time started at 10pm (again this all occurred at 6:45pm). He showed zero empathy or concern for her feelings, and forced her into agreeing to wrap the event up by 8pm (which we intended to do anyways) but he came across as uncaring and threatening about it. My wife was distraught over this ruining the rehearsal dinner we had been looking forward to for months, all the while raving about how great your resort is, and I had to do everything in my power to convince her to stay the following night on our wedding night as she wanted to leave and did not want to give your resort any additional money after being made to feel so terribly disrespected. Immediately after this manager left several guests checked the BC Government's website and were furious to confirm that the COVID rules did NOT restrict having small functions indoors AS well as the fact we only booked this room because we were told by a member of staff that it would be PERFECT for this specific function. I'd like to make it clear that no music was played, no shouting occurred, it was just pleasant conversation to celebrate a wedding and again ended at 815pm - which was always the plan. I cannot stress enough that my pregnant wife CAME AWAY FROM THAT CONVERSATION IN TEARS AND WANTED TO LEAVE THE HOTEL IMMEDIATELY, and I had to spend most of the evening telling her that it would be ok and that this hotel was supposed to be ELITE. I have never been so disappointed in the handling of a situation in my life. I understand where this manager was coming from doing his job but the handling of the situation was so far beyond acceptable it is difficult to even put in words. This could have been handled so much better than it was. The only reason that this rating is even a two was because the day of the wedding I spoke to a different manager who was on duty the night of the 5th and they were amazing and asked to have a wedding night plate of strawberries to our room and when we got back we had a hand written note and a beautiful plate of chocolate strawberries awaiting us. This did however confirm to us that the hotel is capable of better customer service then we received, so clearly the manager who handled our situation my a conscious decision to handle his highest paying guests with the poorest level of respect. We have since been staying at a luxury hotel in Whistler and even though we didn't opt for the most expensive room in the resort we have been treated unbelievably well and will certainly chose this hotel chain over the Westin for future travels. Overall we cannot stress enough just how much the WESTIN, which we expected to be the easy part of our wedding weekend, let us down the most and actually turned out to be the only black mark on our entire wedding experience. We live locally and have golfed at the resort many times over many years including on the 5th, and my wife's family had even had memberships to Bear Mountain golf club when it first opened. Based on this result and experience we will be strongly discouraging people from staying at the Westin location in Bear Mountain as we felt extremely cheated and ultimately treated as if we didn't belong. One other thing of note is when attempting to use the dishwasher we found what looked to be week old water sitting in the basin of it which stunk and was completely disgusting. Additionally my wife noticed dead flies around several of the window ledges, even though we opted to have the room cleaned daily. Sadly we did submit this exact review via the survey the Westin sent us after our stay, as we were encouraged to do by one of their staff, and have yet to hear anything back even though this was submitted a week ago. Apparently they continue to keep letting us down.
