Our stay at Pousada Mosteiro dao Crato, was everything we were hoping for. Imagine wondering around portions of a medieval castle, that you can comftorably stay at. The room had a wonderful picture window looking out to the countryside. The food was great, and of course the staff's hospitality was second to none.
The first impression of the Pousada is good. However, we went to the bar for a drink. No barman was there. The receptionist told us that she would send the bartender to assist us. We waited for almost 45 minutes and since no one came to serve us we decided to leave. The choice of drinks displayed was very limited for such a property.
Great rooms, great history, great staff!! and wonderfull bar room. I spent two days celebrating my birthay day and I was surprised by the staff with a cake and champagne in my room. Wonderfull days in quite place.
On our way from Serra da Estrela to Algarve, we stayed at Pousada Mosteiro do Crato. First of all the property is rather easy to find due to proper signs arriving at Flor da Rosa. Then we find a large parking with easy access. The long way from the parking to the main entrance of the Pousada is a bit long but OK. Then starts a bit of the problem with the multiple step of stairs we had to cross with very heavy luggage to reach the lobby of the Pousada. Anticipating the struggle, we went to the lobby to get help which was provided immediately by a very nice gentleman. We had booked the master suite. Another very kind person took us to our suite handling all our luggage in a very efficient way. The first impression of the room was good. However, the second impression was that the large bathroom would need to be refurbished. We went then to the bar for a drink. No barman was there. We had to call someone at the reception. The choice of drinks was very limited for such a property; for example, there was no way to have a cocktail. After a dinner with rather dull food, we went to bed. Then around 10:00 pm, a dog in the nearby farm started to bark until midnight and began again around 6:00 am. In addition, the bells of the church nearby rang every half hour the whole night. In the morning, we were very disappointed with the breakfast especially some ingredients that were not properly refrigerated. Overall this property has a lot of charm (chapel, museum, pool) but the hotel part of it could be handled in a better way and some areas require refurbishing. The personnel was very nice. But the management should consider some changes.…
Crato Portugal is a bit off the path but absolutely worth the extra time to stop here for at least two nights AND stay in the Castle. We came here from Sevilla to get a break from the larger city experience. I recommend room 401 and take the time for the spa and a massage. The room is the ideal castle experience and feel. You lay in bed and are surrounded by stone walls, a non use fireplace, perfect natural lighting and such good, strong, positive energy. The restaurant staff, especially Paula and Maria, are exceptional. They are friendly, knowledgeable and kind. The restaurant food was excellent. The local wine selection was great. We had five or six different local red wines. The front reception was also friendly and knowledgeable about the castle and Crato. We walked into town which was just charming. This is a DO NOT MISS type of experience.…
I love the monesteiro do Flor da Rosa (officiallly nowadays pousada do Crato). Great rooms, great history, great staff!! They could do something about the diner room / breakfast room, its not giving you the same feeling as all the rest!!
First the pluses: The setting is amazing: beautifully restored historical monument which also houses a museum (incl. temporary exhibitions). It really feels like stepping back into medieval times. It is located in a very small and quiet village with little or no amenities (which is perfectly fine for peace and quiet), but something you need to bear in mind before you book. If you wish to eat elsewhere, the nearest will probably be a few km away. This said the food at the pousada was surprisingly good (in quality and value) and the kitchen is flexible for people with special diets. The staff is very attentive and friendly and the common areas are spacious and atmospherical. The bar area is very pleasant with a good choice of drinks, the outdoor bar likewise and the pool and surrounding pool area are out of this world. The minuses: The breakfast is a bit bland and below what one would expect for the price range. The room facilities are dated and in need of an update, especially the bathroom: fx. the baths are extremely uncomfortable and pose a huge challenge for people with mobility difficulties, the (old) hairdriers hang far too high (a smaller person than I would not have been able to reach them) and the cables are too short/impractical, lighting system is not ideal (and difficult to understand) and there aren't enough power sockets in the rooms (the existing ones are located on the floor far from the beds - they were clearly designed for the cleaning staff/lighting appliances and not for guests). Lastly a check-in time of 16.00 (with check-out at 11.00) is a first for me. I've travelled all around the world and this is the latest check-in I've ever experienced - and in my opinion completely unacceptable for a big hotel chain like Pestana - no matter the reason/excuse. Were it not for check-in time, breakfast and the small improvements in the rooms, this property would be a cleat 5 plus.…
We had great expectations for a stay in our first pousada. We were looking to break a drive from Evora to Porto and were delighted to find the Mosteiro do Crato. The original building is a museum. The modern wing, in which our room was located, was stark. The room was nicely sized, with a terrace overlooking fenced agricultural lots, but it was starkly and spartanly decorated. There were multiple scuff marks on the wooden floor. There were no room amenities (slippers. robes etc). The dining room was similarly sterile in decor. We felt we were eating in a government cafeteria. Food was ok, service was good. But here is what blew our minds: tired, after a few misdaventures on our drive, we immediately opted for cocktails (2 each) at the only open bar (by the pool). The drinks were fine, but we learned subsequently (at checkout) they were priced at twice the cost of the dinner.…
There’s a lot we liked about this hotel and some things that we didn’t. On the plus side, this is a wonderful property created around an old monastery set in a remote part of the Alentejo region of Portugal. The rooms are big and comfortable and the food is generally good. There is a lovely pool and adjacent sunbathing area. The down side, is that the hotel is very bland in parts. The restaurant, in particular, is very minimal and lacks atmosphere. The massive brutalist extension which houses the bedrooms creates a rather unattractive outside bar/restaurant area. It is not very inviting and it feels like you are sitting on the ground floor of a multi-storey car park surrounded by bare concrete. You could do so much more to make this property more aesthetically pleasing. The staff are helpful but are not overflowing with charm and take some time to warm to you. English is not widely spoken.…
The hotel is amazing, staff are incredibly corteous and professional and the restaurant is top notch. Flawless service. Perfect experience. You cannot go wrong staying here on a couple or family trip.
