Our stay hosted by Nena was simply outstanding! We arrived in Stemnitsa not knowing what to expect and were pleasantly surprised by the warmth of the hospitality and charm of the village and Mpelleiko.
Our room was spacious, bright and spotless, with a lovely stone patio plus a veranda with gorgeous views over the rooftops of the town and mountains.
Nena's detailed knowledge of the historyof the area and hiking trails was a bonus for two ambitious but not seasoned hikers!
Breakfast was comprised of local homemade food,, sourced from Nena"s garden and local village, served like home in the kitchen!
-All in all a lovely stay!

We visited Stemnitsa at the beginning of October 2021 and chose the Mpelleiko Guesthouse because of its raving review in our guidebook. We were not disappointed. Nena, the owner, was friendly, helpful and welcoming; her guesthouse is like home from home. The rooms are lovingly furnished and each has a little terrace, the views are phantastic. All guests can use the kitchen and Nena produces the most amazing breakfast every morning using her own produce and home-made bread, jam etc. Staying during Covid times also felt safe as there were clear rules and it was up to the guests whether they wanted their rooms serviced or not. Nena clearly enjoys pleasing and helping her guests and happily shares her local knowledge. We loved it so much that we extended our stay. A most memorable stay - thanks Nena!

The hostess of this guesthouse is special and doing amazing. Her guesthouse is beautiful and neatly kept on the exterior and interior. She makes you feel incredibly welcome, asking everything is alright and providing you with insider's information throughout your stay. She serves homemade breakfast and stays in the kitchen for questions.

The guesthouse is from the 17th century and its rooms have a traditional interior. They are spacious and have terraces. The view onto the village and deep valley is magnificent. The village is traditional too: there is a silver shop, bakery and cosy square with tavernes.

There are many hiking options in the region. We went to an orthodox monastry on a cliff. Its location is stunning and it is special to be the guests of the monks that still live here. It was a 2hour hike
with amazing viewpoints and river crossings. This is just an example of a route, there are many more.

I extremely recommend this place to all wanting to experience inland, mountainy Greece!

What a peaceful and wonderful stay! I stayed here with my husband and two sons. What a peaceful and wonderful stay! I stayed here with my husband and two sons. We had a wonderful balcony and garden area to relax and enjoy the outdoors from our room. Nena (the owner) provided a pack-n-play for my youngest. The guesthouse is immaculate and breakfast each morning was delicious and home made by Nena and her mother. Nena is very accommodating and always checking in to make sure everything is okay and if you need anything. She is filled with knowledge of the village and surrounding areas. The guesthouse has ample parking for its guests and the views are the best int he village. I love enjoying my morning coffee from one of the balconies each day. A must stay!

I read about the giant white cat at Mpelleiko and Psipsinos (roughly translated as "Puss") didn't disappoint. A great purr, loves a stroke and sat in the morning sun overlooking his domain, the beautiful little town of Stemnitsa.

Nena, his charismatic owner, let me feed Psipsinos his morning fish. Psipsinos is fed well at breakfast, and so was I, with a moreish oven-baked cheese omelette, homemade preserves and healthy granola with a choice of two types of fresh yoghurt. Nena even packed up the leftovers for me to eat on my way back to Athens Airport.

I was fortunate to stay here. All the other guests had cancelled owing to the national lockdown Greece introduced that day. Nena took this in her stride. She knows that tourists will return to her characterful guesthouse. It's not like any other, and one of the best that I've stayed in across more than 100 countries. And not just because of the cat.

Thoroughly enjoyed an albeit too short (2 night) stay, Everything about this place was superb. Our room and the common area were clean, neat and very comfortable. There is a great view from the common area/breakfast room and some of the guest rooms. The homemade breakfast was different each day (except for the fresh baked bread) and absolutely delicious. The area around Stemnitsa is really quite stunning and very quiet when we were there in Sept. The nearby Lousios Gorge with its monasteries is definitely worth a hike or walk depending on what you are up for. The best part about the stay was the hostess Nena who was friendly, attentive, helpful, and a great source of information about the area. Everything you could possibly hope for in a hostess. It felt very much like we were staying with a friend! Would love to stay there again....but this time for more than just 2 nights.

Nena was the loveliest host and cared a lot about our experience. The room and view and breakfast were all wonderful. The attention to providing hiking directions, driving directions, firewood, cold water and homemade food were all impeccable. Her mom makes jams for the breakfast that are incredible and she creates a congenial atmosphere with other guests. Recommend so highly!! This is the best value of the places we stayed on the peninsula. We wish her every success!!

Mpelleiko is a gorgeous traditional home overlooking the picturesque mountain village of Stemnitsa. The grounds have beautiful terraced gardens and the house has historical decor and modern amenities. You stay here, however, to interact with Nena, the owner and hostess of this oikos. Nena's family has owned Mpelleiko for generations, and she has written the histories of both the home and the town of Stemnitsa. Nena will make sure you arrive to the home in one piece, then once you're there, make you feel like family. Immediately upon arrival, she met us in the town square and guided us to Mpelleiko, where she offered us a drink and answered all of our questions about the town. The next morning, Nena made us a lovely breakfast (coffee, pastries from her family bakery, homemade breads, her mother's sour cherry jam, frittata, and more). Being a geographer at heart, Nena took out her maps and devised a route for us to take that day, which couldn't have been more perfect for our travel tastes. We can't wait to return to spend more time at Mpelleiko.

We spent two months in Greece - Crete and the Peloponnese with a handful of islands for good measure. For our last week we chose Mpelleiko in the mountain village of Stemnitsa since the reviews were so promising. What a delight this historic house proved to be. In over 50 years of worldwide travel it would be difficult to name a place we have enjoyed more. The terraced gardens, our room (the Winter Room) with its private terrace looking over the village below through a pink rose just coming into flower which rambled along the low fence, the extraordinarily inventive breakfasts which changed each day except for the delicious freshly baked bread and, best of all, Nena whose love for the house, the mountains , forests and her village shines through each encounter. The kitchen/breakfast room is open all night, softly lit, just in case you might like to make tea and gaze over the lights of the village below. Whatever you wish to do, whether it is hiking in the gorge, visiting monasteries built into the cliffs, driving higher to the pine forests or simply exploring the neighbouring villages, Nena always finds the time to offer suggestions and recommend favourite restaurants and tavernas.

I really can't recommend Mpelleiko highly enough and we are so very grateful that we were able to spend a full week there. Back in Australia, we dream of it still.......
