This is the review not about hotel/rooms but rather the spa/massage facility at the second floor. Now, at Tanjung Balai you _can_ get 1h body massage at local shops for something like 60K IDR, but I would not advise you to do it, because professionalism of local masseuses is very low, let's speak honestly - non existent. Now at Maximilian 1h body massage would cost twice as much but at least you probably will get the best (corrected to the localion) quality in the whole island. If you go with the traditional Indonesian massage, Maximillian's masseuses do know their business quite well and you won't be disappointed. A separate note - I am not a big proponent giving tips to service personal but considering the price (120K IDR per hour) and the fact that masseuse will only get fraction of that rate, if you've been satisfied with the result, give some money to them. They deserved it. Additional plus - you can pay for the massage/spa with a credit card at hotel's lobby.

This place is about 5 minutes walk from the jetty. If you can’t find this place you can ask the local there, they are very friendly and willing to talk and show you the direction. We booked the suite room, cause we wanted to experience. After staying, I think not necessarily, since they didn’t give free mini bar, and the room was not especially clean. The only plus point, I guess is spacious. The suite room is quite affordable. About s$80. They have very nice steam and sauna there, price of rp100,00 per pax. We didn’t try since we are not a fan of that. The spa look good and affordable, see photo for more information:). Their security guards are friendly and helped us stop the public transport to sent us to the next location. It will be great if you can speak basic Malay or Indonesian. Cause most of the staff can’t speak English. I don’t remember seeing chinese staff.

This hotel is located approx. 10mins (by foot) from the ferry terminal. Road condition in Balai is quite challenging due to pot holes and poor maintenance and lack of foot paths. Check in is relatively easy although staff spoke almost no English. We booked the best room available (which is the Suite), spacious although bare minimal in-room amenities. Bed sheets had old blood stains and no sound proofing (beware not to make funny noises). Hotel is stingy with tissue and lack toiletries. No hairdryer available. Rather jaded looking hotel. Hotel has a meeting room, spa, heated pool and ktv. Breakfast food was less than average, nothing to shout about. Maybe because there isn’t much guests? No fresh juices nor yogurt. Outdoor restaurant view faces the sea which is very therapeutic, further extension into the sea is still under renovation. Location is wonderful and within walking distance to food places, shops, market and Pasar Malam. Staff were helpful in flagging down local transport van. Recommended to stay.

This is my 2nd time stay in this hotel. Nice & clean hotel. Staff are polite and friendly. The bedsheet and bathroom are clean. Near shop houses. Willing to help us on early check-in and late check-out. Recommended hotel.
