Nestled into a hidden ridge in the shadow of the sacred Nanda Devi Range, The Kumaon offers a private mountain retreat situated in the heart of nature. The Kumaon is located in Kasar Devi, a ridge above the historical city of Almora, which has attracted artists, pilgrims, scholars and seekers for centuries — Swami Vivekananda, DH Lawrence, Timothy Leary and Bob Dylan, to name but a few. The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is a short 15 minute drive from the property. Jageshwar, an ancient and revered temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva, is an hour's drive away. The Katarmal Surya Mandir, one of only three extant temples dedicated to the Sun, is located 30 mins away by car. Guests can walk through hamlets practising traditional agriculture; descend through forests of Oak, Cedar and Rhododendron to these ancient stone temples, or simply relax in the mountain sunshine and clean air, surrounded by birdsong and the fragrant smell of pine.

First of all the views - stunning and like nothing we have ever seen. Absolutely beautiful in every regard. But the hotel was a huge disappointment, it is certainly nothing like a 4* hotel. The hotel arranged pick up from Pantnagar and 4 1/2 hours later we arrived to a bitterly cold room. The outside temperature was 6 degrees and there was no heating in the room. They lit the woodburner in the room (with wood and lighter fuel!) but obviously this needs wood constantly added. They kindly brought two plug in radiators, but it was not enough to heat the large room. They tried so hard to put this right (even putting a hot water bottle in the bed for which I was very grateful), but the bottom line is the room remained cold. The restaurant was even worse - there is no heat whatsoever on the restaurant floor and we sat in our jumpers and padded coats to eat still seeing our cold breath as we ate. We were due to stay for 4 nights, but left after 1, the hotel agreed to refund the second night (as we had paid 50% deposit) which we were grateful for. This could be the most spectacular hotel, but their lack of experience of what is required will hamper them which is a shame. The staff are extremely lovely people but I wonder how many of them have ever worked in a 4/5* hotel? I have seen it described on another website as a 'walking lodge' which I would say is more accurate.

Hi Gloria, We are sorry that your experience with us was less than satisfactory. We value your feedback and are looking into the same on priority. We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience faced by you due to the cold. Being in a remote location in the mountains where centralized heating systems of urban hotels are not feasible and usually not expected by our discerning travelers; the luxury is our setting in the heart of nature and far from maddening crowds. It was also the coldest March in a long time. Our valued staff is recruited from the surrounding villages; many of them participated in building the property as well! We believe that this sense of community helps our guests experience true Kumaoni culture. We do hope you would give us another chance to showcase our hospitality. Please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any more concerns. Thank you, Pushkar Singh Negi General Manager pushkar@thekumaon.com

Lucky us, the 2 nights stay raise us to paradise by the sunny cool weather which enlarge our great experience at the hotel. Staffs provided professional service started from the railway station pick up by skilled driver, he made the 3 hours journey comfortable. We attracted by the contemporary design of the hotel, modern, chin and cozy atmosphere with friendly humble local staffs made a wonderful vacation, yes 2 nights stay never enough. The breathtaking snow Mountain View nourish our soul and pamper our eyes. Spacious bedroom with neat and clean decorated; great dishes in dinning room, helpful staffs gave us a thumbs up vacation. Credit goes to the owner of The Kumaon who created a artwork from impossible, who brought water to the mountain , connect electricity from village to the hotel which made each drop of hot water and WiFi systems as luxury. This 10 room hotel may be small, but the dream of this amazing project was huge with love and heart. Agree, the Kumaon is the only 5 star accommodation in Binsar, sure she also the top 5 best hotel in my travel life.

I did not have a great experience as the place was infested with huge cockroach like insects, there is no connectivity even for contacting reception, service was not up to the standards too as the staff would not even come inspite of several mobile calls to the managers and were not at all bothered also as I think the place is mostly booked by foreigners, Its a long long walk so a clear no for elderly and challenged, lastly you have to be really cautious in the night as Leopards are frequently sighted and so you cannot be roaming around after dark. Yes its scenic and the mountain views are great but for that price I think they really need to do something soon if they really want to attract tourist

Hi Charu, We are sorry that your experience with us was less than satisfactory. We value your feedback and are looking into the same on priority. We have upgraded our intercom system so that the guests can reach us easily. All guests are informed beforehand about the walk, and staff assists the guests to carry their bags from the parking to the property so that no inconvenience is caused to the guests. We do believe that our location away from the main road helps maintain the seclusion and the peace of the property. Leopards are endemic to the region as they are across many parts of India, and it is natural and encouraging that leopard populations are in resurgence. However, no leopards have ever been sighted around the property. To enhance guests’ safety, we have a guard on duty at night. As we are located amidst nature, the region is a natural habitat for insect life. However, our housekeeping staff takes prompt measures to ensure guests aren’t inconvenienced to the extent possible. We do hope you would give us another chance to showcase our hospitality. Please feel free to get in touch with us if you have any more concerns. Thank you, Pushkar Singh Negi General Manager pushkar@thekumaon.com

This simple and unassuming property fills the heart with joy and the soul with peace. Under the confident leadership of Pushkar and the culinary genius of Rajat, this 10-room boutique hotel is warm and welcoming for guests, visitors and employees alike. Over the course of my stay, I have experienced the staff as being competent and courteous, the rooms as large and comfortable and the food as mouth-wateringly good. The bonus is a killer view of the mountains. The spa setup was a surprise and really really good. Whether you are a bunch of friends or a family cohort or even a couple looking for some downtime, this is a place that I would truly recommend 👍🏼👍🏼
