Where do we start? What a diabolical experience we had prior to check in We arrived a few hours before check in so we had some drinks and ordered lunch time food, we asked for one meal for GF bread but it was inedible and salad was covered in salt, chicken wings were more like pigeon wings tasteless and small with little meat a rip off for £9!! Mature cheddar cheese advertised in sandwiches was processed sliced cheese and tasteless When we complained the management they were very unsure if their authority levels and rather demeaning to us and the apparent restaurant manager lacked any authority to make a decision to rectify our bad experience so we asked for the duty manager and she got involved at our insistence and she was again lacking any understanding of our issues and a few times rude and lacked any empathy for our situation and actually inferred that one of our party was a liar at one point. We were shocked and upset as you can imagine We wanted at that stage not to stay a minute longer at the hotel and asked for a refund but she said that was against “company policy' and did not allow this as it was the day of arrival, we stressed in the strongest terms why would we want to stay at the hotel after such a bad experience? She was not empathetic to our situation at all and did not offer any solutions other than telling us we could have an upgrade room for free We said we would reluctantly look at the rooms as a refund was not being offered When we arrived at the rooms at 4pm ( checking was 3pm) there was still the previous occupiers waste plates food and glasses and bottles all along the corridor and outside the rooms being offered This was not what we expected and the guy who was showing us the rooms looked embarrassed We decided to leave the hotel at that stage without checking in Never experienced such poor service and lack of support at any hotel Done

Response from Christina B, Owner at Crowne Plaza Reading East, An IHG hotel
Responded 2 days ago
Dear Paul Hart We refer to your visit to the new Crowne Plaza Reading East on 13 August 2022 and write to document the totally unacceptable conduct on the part of yourself and your group whilst at the hotel. On 26 July 2022, you made an advance saver online booking at the hotel for 13th August 2022 for 2 Emperor Rooms at a rate of £ 283.32 for both rooms. The terms applicable to the advance saver rate are strictly non-refundable and non- cancellable, which you accepted at time of booking, and as you were further reminded by the Hotel Manager on the day. Despite check in time being from 15.00, your party of four arrived at the hotel before noon, expecting to be checked in 3 hours earlier than the published check in time. Since the hotel had been virtually fully booked on the previous evening, you were advised that check- in would only be possible from 15.00 onwards. You accordingly decided to move to the Monty’s bar lounge with your friends and to order rounds of wine spritzer, 2 JJ pink gin / 2 ginger ale, 1 Hendricks and Fevertree tonic. You also ordered a smoked salmon sandwich / 3 portions of fries / 1 mature cheddar sandwich and 1 Gluten free cheese sandwich, and 1 Cajun chicken wings. Despite the hotel having 2AA rosettes and all food being freshly prepared to order , you decided to create a scene when the gluten free sandwich which had been ordered, was apparently not to the liking of your guest . You further became disruptive about the Cajun chicken wings and as a result, both these items were voided from your bill. It soon became apparent from your rude and aggressive actions, that you were deliberately being disorderly and disruptive in order to secure free alcohol for your group, without any basis whatsoever for your demands . The Restaurant & Bar Manager advised that you were demanding compensation or free drinks, but when he informed you that he was not authorised to offer anything further, you asked for the Hotel Manager. You were informed that she was dealing with a wedding ceremony which was just starting at the time, yet you commented that you should have been a priority and continued to put pressure on the team for the Hotel Manager to attend your table immediately. As soon as the Hotel Manager arrived to see you in the bar, you all started talking at once and told her how useless the team were, as no one could provide you with anything for free. She explained to you that your feedback about the meal had been discussed with management, who had approved for your two meals to be removed from your bill, and that was the final compensation that would be offered. You also commented to her that you had been waiting for you rooms. At that point it was still not the check in time of 15.00. She explained that check in had just started and she would personally allocate your rooms and upgrade you too, and she requested that you should make your way to the reception in 5 minutes as everything would be ready for your check in. You remained in the bar chatting with your group for a further 30 minutes. The Duty Manager noticed that you had still did not come to the reception to check in, so in order to assist you as he was aware of the scene you had been creating with his colleagues , he approached you in the bar with the registration cards and pdq machine for the pre authorisation of £ 75 per room for ancillaries. You refused to provide a card for pre authorisation, and continued with your strategy of shouting at the Duty Manager, demanding whether he could give you complimentary drinks ‘before you lost your patience and spoilt the wedding function at the hotel.’ Your threats and aggressive conduct are totally unacceptable. There were several guests listening to you, who were shocked at how inappropriately you all spoke to the Hotel Manager and to other staff members, using the versed tactic of all of your group shouting at the team members at the same time, and then making constant demands for free alcohol and compensation, without any basis whatsoever for same. As the Hotel Manager had arranged to upgrade both your rooms to brand new Executive Rooms, the Duty Manager took you to your rooms as you requested. It was apparent you had no intention of checking in as you did not have money to pay for the pre-authorisation, and had now also realised that this was not a hotel where you would receive free drinks and compensation on spurious grounds or by abusing the staff Whilst the Duty Manager was taking you to your rooms, you shouted at him loudly in the corridor making an issue about 2 room service trays which guests had put out in the corridors and which were being collected by the waiting staff at the time as you fully witnessed . Upon return to the reception, one of your party threw the pen down on the reception desk, tore up the registration cards and stated you were leaving. The Hotel Manager explained that it was your choice, however your booking was a fully chargeable, non-refundable booking and if you chose to leave the charges would remain . You continued to berate her by calling her a bad manager and the worst team as no one could make any decision to give you anything for free. You were also overheard telling another guest that they should think twice about staying at the hotel, as further evidence of your unacceptable and disruptive behaviour In light of your appalling conduct, which left the team traumatised, and also upset other guests, you are requested to make alternate arrangements when staying in the area. The hotel itself is nice - very clean and comfortable. The food is excellent but the thing that makes this such a lovely hotel? The staff. They are friendly, attentive and professional. I would definitely stay here again - many thanks to all the staff that work so hard to make it a positive experience.

We stayed 3 nights (friday to monday). The room was ok, large and complete. But… The cleaning was bad (2 x no showergel and coffee/milk, bed was barely made ) When we had breakfast there were no more croissants (2x “you should have come earlier”) and no yoghurt (out of order). When we left the free parking , it was blocked by a barrier Many times sorry , but for me it is no more Crown Plaza

Booked late minute groupon and wasn't disappointed. Room usual standard hotel room - clean and comfy. Spa was nice and we enjoyed using it but dinner.... ordered from Indian menu and my hubby is a massive lover of Indian food, the hotter the better. Didn't disappoint. Food was lovely. My dish was too spicy so they took it away and redone it. Service was brilliant. Staff so lovely, friendly yet professional. Worth their weight in gold

First impressions on arrival were good, it was downhill very quickly from there Customer service was very poor all round, room service non existent. Called room service from our room and got no reply, had to physically go to reception to order room service food and there were no reception staff to be seen, we had to knock on the office door to find a member of staff Also we had to present a bank card for a £100 holding fee and were told this would be refunded the next day after checkout, 7 days later this £100 had still not been refunded, it would be interesting to see how much interest Crown Plaza receive from these £100 holding fees!! We also tried to book a table in the Resturaunt on the Friday night only to be told there was nothing available, however, from where we were sitting in the bar area where we had to eat, it was evident there were many vacant tables, it would seem it was due to lack of staff and very under trained staff The one good thing about this hotel was the room and the cleanliness of the hotel

Dear DanielwL184FC Thank you for your recent stay with us, and for providing a feedback on your experience. I do want to take this time to apologize for the inconvenience regarding the fact that our restaurant and bar were 100% fully booked on both nights of your stay . As we are fortunate enough to have 2AA rosettes, our restaurant is very popular and tends to be fully booked most weekends . During the weekend of your stay, i am aware that the food & beverage team served over 220 guests each evening for dinner and as a result, a decision was taken to defer room service orders between 19.00 - 22.00 to enable the team to focus on the dinner service in the restaurant and bar. This was notified on the bedroom screen and i apologise that you had to come down to the reception to order room service, but I am pleased that the team still prepared this for you . I apologise that you were in any way inconvenienced by the routine request for a pre authorisation of £ 50 per night on your credit card on arrival. Kindly note that IHG, along with most other major hotel companies, utilizes credit and debit card authorizations as a standard practice. It is assumed when you make a reservation for one of our hotels, the credit/debit card account number you provide has sufficient funds available to be used as a guarantee. An authorization hold amount, in some situations, may be up to the total amount of your room and tax charges for your entire stay, including incidentals. All credit cards are pre-authorized 24 hours prior to arrival & £50 per night on check in. If i can politely refer you to the hotel website and the booking confirmation issued to you, this policy is also mentioned. Kindly note that it is the hotel's policy to cancel all unused pre authorisations on the day of departure . The issuing bank/credit card company then governs the release of an authorization hold, and the release time varies according to each Bank's individual policies. If you would like further information regarding your bank’s individual policies, please contact them directly. I can confirm that the hotel released your pre authorisation on the day of departure. Thank you once again for your feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our beautiful new hotel & spa again when next visiting the area. Regards Hotel Management

This was my first stay at this former Holiday Inn property and it would certainly not be my first choice if returning to the area again. Whilst the rooms have been smartened up in terms of decor, they still suffer from poor air con / ventilation and dreadfully dark and dreary corridors. Breakfast was disappointing with a number of menu items unavailable and the team on duty were clearly struggling to cope with clearing tables and replenishing the buffet. In general terms, I’d describe the staff as disinterested and unhelpful. I had a number of issues with my booking and found the level of telephone assistance offered by the hotel in resolving these to be woefully inadequate and at times borderline rude and disrespectful. The service at check in was similarly brusque and the breakfast staff just couldn’t be bothered to help. When I requested a table in the upper level seating area to be away from other guests, the response of the breakfast supervisor was “If you can find a clean table then help yourself”. Crowne Plaza is meant to offer an elevated experience compared with the hotel’s former branding. Personally, I’ve enjoyed better service at IHGs budget chains than I did on. Y stay this property.

Dear Johnnyboyyork Thank you very much for choosing Crowne Plaza Reading East for your first stay following our complete transformation of our hotel & spa in 2021. I am sorry to learn that your experience fell short of your expectations, for which I would like to offer my apologies. I am pleased you liked the decor and standards within our brand new rooms. By way of information, all rooms were entirely stripped and redone as part of the rebranding to Crowne Plaza , with bespoke 100% wool Axminster carpet, brand new Kingsize beds and luxury bedding , new bedroom furniture and joinery, state of art Samsung HDD 50" flat screen with Chromecast, and new luxury curtains, cushions and throws as well as everything else in the room too . I do appreciate that interior design standards and choices are entirely a matter of personal taste , but feel somewhat surprised at your comments about the new corridors considering you only spend about 10 seconds walking down them to get to/ from your room . It is unfortunate you did not ask a member of our team to assist you with the operation of the air conditioning in your room, as they would have been pleased to do so had you asked. I would like to assure you that your feedback has been discussed with the food & beverage team who do find it challenging to deal with Sunday morning breakfast service between 10.00 - 11.00, when around 250 guests all arrive for their late Sunday breakfast at the same time. This is a challenge most busy hotels worldwide face as I am sure you will appreciate. Thank you once again for your feedback Regards Hotel Management

We really enjoyed our stay! We booked using a voucher from virgin experiences and it was such good value for money. The voucher included 2 nights (with late check out, dinner on one of the nights, breakfast both mornings and a 55min massage. The hotel was modern and so clean everywhere!!! There is not much around or walking distance but is great if you have a car because nothing is too far away. We went to Windsor castle on one of our days, only 25 mins away. The room was fabulous! So clean, had everything we needed including a fridge and a massive tv! Very modern and there was miniatures in the bath room. Only annoying thing is there is no where to hang wet towels or wet swimming costumes! The breakfast was wonderful, everything you could want, we discovered a breakfast menu which they do not openly advertise! This has pancakes, waffles and French toast etc. the staff were brilliant and constantly topping up items and clearing g peoples plates. The bar was interesting….no cocktails between 7-9! We got there at 6:50 but the bar man refused us a pre dinner cocktail and was really rude to his bar staff! So we just went straight to dinner instead. The dinner was great! The head waiter was charming, helpful, and apologised for the way the barman treated us. He helped explain the menu options and made recommendations we also observed him supporting and teaching new/ less experienced staff. He was awesome! I didn’t catch his name but he had long brown hair tied up off his face- he’s a credit to the hotel. The spa was lovely, small, not many loungers but it was good for a mastic spa. The massages were great! Very relaxing. Our biggest compliment goes to Karen/ Keren I. Reception! She always had a smile on her face she apologised to us about the bar and made amends with us, even though it was not her fault. She went above and beyond for us and nothing was too much trouble she always said hello as we wandered round the hotel. We love you Karen! X Thank you so much for a great stay! We can’t wait to return and we would definitely use the virgin experience voucher as it worked out such great value for money.

Booked 3 months in advance but spa treatment bookings inconveniently changed 48 hours before arrival to split a full body massage Into 2 sessions with an hours break in between. When queried with Katy the Spa manager whilst she did rearrange bookings the customer service was somewhat lacking. Whilst on the topic of the spa my sister had a wonderful massage, mine however consisted of the masseuse swiping some massage oil on the relevant bits with one hand. I have massages regularly and this was hands down the worst one I have ever had. Also a lack of sun loungers around the pool for the number of spa attendees. Decent swimming pool and steam rooms. The check in was professional with a £50 deposit taken and advised I would receive it back the day after checking out (this was yesterday I have just called to ask if my refund was processed only to be told they were too busy today). I live in hope they find time in their busy schedule to return my money! Room was clean and faultless. The restaurant was clinical in its customer service whilst everyone was pleasant there is a general lack of warmth from any staff members across the board in this hotel. Both the 3 course dinner and breakfast were delicious. My sister and I booked this as a Spa Break through Virgin Experience so whilst I had read poor reviews I trusted Virgin would have ensured their packages were of the best quality. I was wrong.
