Hotel's Favorite
When a hotel’s spectacular location 8250 metres high in the Himalayas is closely rivalled by its exquisite Burma teak-panelled interiors and stately spaces, you’d be forgiven for expecting the service to pale in comparison – after all, why put in the effort when taking in stunning mountain views and staying in the midst of a lush coniferous forest are the real do-before-you-die aspirations most guests want to tick off their bucket list? But the experience my son and I had during our four-night stay at Wildflower Hall was quite the contrary, i.e. the service was something to send postcards home about. I’ve always believed that hospitality is a delicate thing – try too hard, and you risk turning guests off forever. Give guests their ‘space’, and otherwise well-intentioned, impeccably-run hotels are at the receiving end of unfairly stinky Tripadvisor reviews, calling it a ‘lack of attention’. The trick, then, is to be authentic – but that’s easier said than done, because it’s not something you can just turn on. That authenticity is almost always a top-down trickle: If the leadership values genuine connection and empathy with guests, communicates this to the staff every day, and leads by example… then magic happens. Wildflower Hall is not a large property by global standards, but it was still absolutely astounding that by day 2 of our stay there, every single staffer, from the ones at the front desk and the wait staff to the spa therapists and the lifeguard addressed me and my son by name, each one smiling through his or her face mask. To help travellers get an idea of the spirit of the place, I’ve listed a few positive encounters and experiences we had during our stay. And I must mention we were regular guests, and not VIPs (lol) of any sort: • The vehicle that picked us up at the airport had a mini-fridge, wet towels, water, Wi-Fi, soft drinks, cushions, the ability to play music from our phones via Bluetooth (and I’m sure other things that I’m forgetting right now). The driver was attentive and polite, and obliged very willingly when we asked him to make several stops so we could stretch our legs, use the bathroom, or get a bite to eat (it’s a long drive to the hotel) • When we arrived at the property, we were greeted by several staff members waiting outside, and when inside, we were gifted local Himachali hats • Gifts for me and my son, a cake, sweets and flowers were sent to our room over the four days we were there • An artistic souvenir was placed in the room on the fourth day of our stay, as a memento for us to take back with us • A complimentary canister of oxygen was sent to my room when I mentioned my mild altitude sickness, and I was promptly connected to a doctor via phone for a quick consultation • One member of staff was assigned to accompany my five-year-old son whenever he wanted to use the kids’ room, play table tennis or watch a movie in the AV room • On two separate occasions, the staff asked whether they could get our jackets from our room, when it started to get chilly on the terrace in the evening • The staff were always around, and were superbly attentive – this is probably not everyone’s cup of tea, and it isn’t mine either, but I appreciated it on this occasion because I needed assistance with my son from time to time • If we were spotted sitting in the lobby after a meal, we were asked if we’d like tea, coffee or hot chocolate • Yogita, the activities manager (not sure if that’s her official designation), went out of her way to keep my son entertained every day, and was incredibly warm and obliging • Rajat, the tour guide who accompanied us through the coniferous forest flanking the hotel, on a wild strawberry hunt, seemed to know every nuance of the forest and put both the nature and local history into context for us. As we walked the trail, he picked up every tiny piece of plastic or paper he could spot (there weren’t many, but he got every one he saw). He was also hauling enough water in his backpack for all eight tour participants! • We never once felt hurried or rushed at the breakfast buffet, even though we arrived close to the end of breakfast on two occasions. In fact, the staff insisted that we order whatever we wanted at the table, even past 10:30am, which is when breakfast at the hotel ends. • Every staff member seemed to have first-hand knowledge of the local history, sights and cuisine – and happily made recommendations • One night, I wanted to sample the local ‘paan’ digestive, a betel-leaf preparation popular all over India. The front desk staff began calling all their drivers to figure who was in the city to be able to pick up a few pieces for me – and they arrived within two hours. It was too late for me to eat it then because I had turned in early, but they refrigerated it and served it to me after lunch the next day. All of this was complimentary! There are other moments, too numerous to mention, but I think you get the idea. The GM, Gaurav Issar, was very forthcoming with practical advice on how to make the most of our stay, and it’s clearly evident that the staff’s warmth, authenticity and attention to detail are inspired by his example. By the time we left, the Wildflower Hall team came as close to being real friends as a group of strangers could ever be.

Excellent service by Saarthak at the front deskand Rojee at housekeeping. The hotel created an "experience" right from the moment we stepped in to the moment we stepped out. Try out the movie theatre. It's a lovely experience. The restaurant staff found apples in the orchard just to get us two glasses of apple juice! Housekeeping helped me out when I needed a little extra help with something outside of their scheduled work. What was cute, but puzzled us a bit: The restaurant staff seem to be a little too eager to get you anything you want even after you've said, "it's ok" when they didn't have something. We had moved on to having tea instead. But found ourselves with two glasses of apple juice right after that because they had fun up to the orchard to pick some apples just for us!!! 😃 We ended up having some juice right after tea to avoid disappointing them. 😃

The perfect blend of old world charm & modern luxury, Wildflower Hall by Oberoi amidst a scenic setting was simply enchanting. Lead by GM Sunit Mukhija, and the rest of his team, no stone was left unturned when it came to our stay. Chef Rajat had magic in his culinary skills and made sure to display it on the table. His Bengali delicacies were delectable & the egg soufflé he made for us was to die for. Ever energetic and always on her feet, Noor Fatema always had a smile on her face and was extremely congenial as well. We enjoyed a delightful nature trail along with Tarun which brought us closer to nature and was a great experience. We were then lead to an old bungalow dating back to the 19th century. Here, we spent the evening relishing a pleasant picnic that was planned and executed by Ravi. These experiences should definitely be on one’s bucket list if they are to visit the Wildflower Hall. Thanking the entire team once again.

We were here from 10th May 2023 for four nights, for a strategy meeting of board committee of a large entity. The property retains its charm as a unique place to be at. Very special and very different old world charm of the Raj period. I have been here three times earlier and continue to be an admirer of the place. We were surprised that not one person was there from my previous stays, as I make it a point to collect names of key people I meet at such places and particularly those who may have impressed us for there hospitality. People have moved and I suppose some effort in orienting the new joiners was apparent. Food as compared to my previous visit, particularly for vegetarians ( not vegan mind you) was charmless and pretty ordinary. Overall however I still believe its a unique place and can go back to its original offering standards.

It’s nice property in Shimla I was looked after well special thanks to Sunit Makhija for taking care of me wonderfully he did best … I had terrible experience at breakfast at first I was denied to sit outside and then I asked for avocado toast at first chef said fine and then after waiting for 20mins someone comes upto my table and says hey it can’t be done because it’s not good quality.. sad thing is other guest was having it on next table I was utterly shocked like why someone do that unless you are full of negativity.. and then the girls at the restaurant aren’t welcoming at all they point out at guests and talk and laugh that’s so terrible really.. I would have asked them did I crack joke or something which made you laugh but then I can’t get myself involved in some peasant looking people .. these people should be Removed immediately because they would only bring embarrassment to the hotel ..So I addressed it to the GM and I’m sure he will do needful being so frequent to all Oberoi properties if I experienc this then it’s sad ..one bad thing can ruin your whole saty I don’t know weather I shall be visiting this hotel again or not ..

Meets the high standards of Oberoi hotels, great service, good restaurant and beautiful rooms. Wildflower Hall is about 45 mins from Shimla, which keeps it quiet and peaceful. There are other hotels in Shimla for those who prefer and town centre location.

This is one of the luxurious properties I have visited! My stay was even more memorable because of the hospitality and courteous behaviour of each and every stuff! The rooms were great, the food was unparallel, and the view from the hotel was amazing! Each of the staff really pampered you! The guided tour by Tarun was exceptional! The open air hot water jacuzzi is something I experienced first time!

Wildflower Hall is a beautiful property - nice well maintained lawns, lots of outdoor seating to enjoy nature. There is also a 3km Strawberry trail (coniferous forest) where naturalists take you for a guided walk. Rooms are spacious and housekeeping does a great job. They are very prompt with anything you may need. Valley view room has nice views - no balcony though. Restaurant food is tasty, Chefs provide you with a variety of food (including local cuisine). Overall it was a relaxing stay. Have a few suggestions which would enhance the experience even more: (1) Currently you have only ancient books in activity room, please add some regular travel books as well (2) Would be great to have a vegetable garden in addition to the fruit trees that you already have (3) Food was really tasty - would be great to see some cooking demonstrations from the Chefs. Would like to call out some of the excellent staff members: [Sarthak, Taashi, Rishita, Srilaxmi, Basil] from Front Desk, Yogita from activity, Ravi who was the naturalist for the guided walks, [Abhishek, Noor, Suman, Ashish] from the restaurant, [Shubham D, Shubham S, Yugal] from Housekeeping.Thank you!
