Loved this place! Beautiful location, clean and comfy rooms, good food and even a roaring fire after dinner. We stayed only a short time during our transit from Amboseli National Park to the Ngorongoro Crater, but we enjoyed it very much. The hike up to...More

About
Description
The village of Mbahe sits at 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, nestled within the lush tropical forest that envelops the mountain. Simon Mtuy's Mbahe family farm consists of 15 acres of More land on which his ancestors raised cattle and today is used as a small ecologically sustainable farm. The cottages at the Mbahe Village farm consist of three buildings with eight semi-detached rooms, simply and tastefully decorated in Simon's own touch with hand-made furniture from local materials. Six rooms have their own bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower with hot water; two rooms share a large full bathroom with tub. The rooms share porch space overlooking the farm's flower garden and the forest above the Moonjo River, which runs through the property. There is an outdoor shower for guests to enjoy, especially nice after a refreshing dip in the river and its waterfall, just steps from the cottages. A covered outdoor dining, meeting, and socializing area surrounds a large fireplace. Electricity comes from the local grid or our own generator. While at Mbahe you may take guided or self-directed walks through the village; visit the local primary school; take long hikes on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and into the national park; tour the Mtuy farm and learn about Chagga coffee farming techniques and the sophisticated irrigation system used on the mountain for more than 100 years; bicycle on the footpaths and dirt roads along the mountain; swim in the Moonjo River and waterfall; tour a traditional Chagga homestead and smithy; make the drive down the mountain to Moshi Town to visit the main market and shopping district; or just sit on your veranda with a cup of freshly brewed coffee and admire the sweeping views of the valley below.
