Ol Malo stands on the last frontier of Northern Kenya, an untamed playground in the heartland of the Samburu tribe that calls to those with wild hearts and adventure in their bones. We specialize in creating the authentic African moments you’ve been dreaming of, from wild helicopter expeditions into the Great Rift Valley to serene relaxation by our infinity pools. At Ol Malo, we have helicopters on our private airstrip, safari cars, mountain bikes, horses, and camels just waiting to take you on an adventure. The three lodging options on our privately-owned family ranch - The House, The Lodge, and Ol Malo Nomad - each offer equal parts comfort and style. The 6-bedroom Ol Malo House and 4-guestroom Ol Malo Lodge were designed as a luxury-style ranch, built by hand with materials of the land as one of the north’s original bush homes. Ol Malo Nomad offers families and groups the chance to engage with nature in a tailor-made way: from exploring by helicopter and fishing vast lakes to trekking on foot, horse or camel with mobile camps into the unknown. Life at Ol Malo is about experiences: soar alongside eagles over our private land and flamingos in Lake Logipi in our helicopters, dance in the dust with Samburu warriors as they singing tales of the past, ride on horseback to watch a family of elephant play in the watering hole, hear the crunch of rock under your camel's feet, and listen to stories of Africa under an Acacia tree whilst munching on food cooked on the flames of an open fire. As third generation Kenyans who have grown up and lived on the land, our family is deeply rooted and committed to our country, it's many cultures, and this beautiful way of life. Guests of the Francombe family have the opportunity to witness Kenya through the eyes and minds of those who know and love the land the most, and learn that there is more to life in Africa than the Big Five.
My family (husband and 11 year old daughter) agrees with most of the reviews written. Ol Malo is a magical place run by an amazing team that makes you feel like a part of the family. We only stayed 3 days but they were filled with adventure and fun and we only wish we stayed longer. We enjoyed game drives and walks, watching elephants and zebras from our room, riding horses and camels, a safari breakfast, and a night/dinner at the tree house. The food was delicious and the staff were kind and helpful. We did not plan to do the helicopter ride to Lake Turkana but are SO happy it worked out - it is a bit of a splurge but it was the most amazing day ever! Ol Malo was our first safari lodge during our 2 week stay in Kenya, and we cannot imagine a better start to our trip. We especially appreciate how thoughtful Annie was as a host, checking on what activities we might want engage in each day and working with us to make our time there extremely special (including extra horseback riding for our horse loving daughter and dinner in our room the day we arrived). We hope to return as we enjoyed it SO much. Definitely on the top of our recommendations to friends.…

Our banda, like all of the other bandas, was beautiful and had a great view of the valley below. We rode camels, had a breakfast in the bush, had fun dancing with the local villagers, and went on a helicopter ride over the riff valley to a lake with thousands of flamingos. We will always include a stay at Ol Malo when we visit east africa. The faimly that owns the lodge are fascinating people who treat guests as members of the family. The covid risk was minmal because all activities and the staff has been fully vaccinated.

Ol Malo is a beautiful property set on an escarpment overlooking the private conservancy. There are no other lodges in the conservancy. This means you will not see many if any other safari vehicles, unlike other safari areas. This is not the best place for spotting animals as they are less used to the cars and have more area to hide. However, you still will see a wide range of animals, including the endangered Grevey zebra, reticulated giraffes, elephants, buffalos and antelopes. What makes this place unique is the variety of cultural and other activities. There are many more opportunities to leave the vehicle and walk in the bush. The lodge has close ties with the local Samburu community and provide a number of cultural activities and opportunities to engage with the local people. We visited a homestead and got to dance with the Samburu warriors. We had an amazing bush breakfast hosted by Colin Francombe, a true font of knowledge about the region and its history and culture, and an honorary Samburu elder. We also had sundowners in the bush with fresh beef cooked on a skillet over an open flame. Ol Malo go out of their way to take care of their guests. They even accommodated a crazy request to have my hair beaded in the traditional Samburu warrior style. Apparently, we are the first guests ever to have requested this, but they made it happen and my partner had her wrist beaded. The food, much of which comes from the Francombes’ farm or is homemade, was excellent. We especially loved the scotch bonnet pepper hot sauce. They should bottle it and sell it! Our room was incredibly spacious and had unique features as it was built into the escarpment. The pool was very relaxing after a day in the bush. Thank you to our hosts, Meg and Rob, Paul, our guide Leuya and the Francombes for making this a memorable stay.…

Experiencing Ol Malo is something every traveler to Kenya should have on their list. In fact. it should be at the top of the list! This family owned lodge is stellar in every way. The cottages and pool area could not be more comfortable, the food fresh and delicious and the bar is always open! The Francombe family has created a luxe retreat where you can experience horseback rides, games drives, camel rides, bush breakfast, game viewing and the EPIC helicopter ride to Lake Turkana. There is also the local culture to be taken in - visiting the Samburu people, visiting the local school and bead workshop are just a few of the experiences. We only stayed 3 nights - next time it will be longer and hopefully soon!

One of the most incredible places on earth. Staff are lovely. Food is incredible and Ol Malo House is utterly stunning and spellbinding. I would recommend that anyone coming to Kenya takes some time to go and visit. Andrew has a helicopter and plane so not only can you have a fly around he can probably pick you and 2 others up should you need that.

We would rate Ol Malo 6 stars if we could. This lodge served as our introduction to safari, and it hit every right note and then some. From bush hikes and a village visit with our amazing guide Tiwa, to camel rides and horseback rides and sleeping in a treehouse, and breakfast in the bush to enchanting conversation with Meg, Robert, Chuylu and Colin, we could go on and on. And the accommodations were perfect! We were practically in tears when we left. Do yourself a favor and book Ol Malo!

Visited Ol Malo specifically to go on a helicopter safari! Epic out of this world experience with our excellent pilot Harry. Absolutely breathtaking once in a lifetime experience. Short camel walk was fun to see a few animals. Meg and Rob were super attentive and Chyulu also very helpful prior to arrival. Bees had “booked” the tree house for the night so we would love to be back when they have moved on

After a long drive from Kalama conservancy, I arrived at Ol' Malo. I was welcomed with huge smiles from staff and a wonderful Meg. I'm sure Meg could tell I was weary from the trip and gave we a short tour of the lodge and we sat down to a wonderful lunch. I was blown away by the food at Olmalo, simple dishes but the ingredients were so fresh. You could see the great pride their cook takes in each meal, the chili sauce they have on hand is constantly in my mind! The room I stayed in was simply the best I've stayed in so far in Africa, built into the rocks with astonishing views. My second day while having a tea I say movement down below the cliffs and jumped down the steps to my private 'lawn" (which sent the hyrax flying, and clicked away with my camera. In the moment it appeared to by a leopard, however in post it was..... a HYENA!! Hahah I'll cherish that memory forever I was blessed to not only meet Meg,her husband, and their children, but also Andrew Francome, his wife Chyulu, and their wonderfully cute children aswell. Andrew and I would share a life changing (at least for me haha) helicopter trip up the Suguta Valley. I highly recommend this adventure to anyone visiting. I recommend taking in the most orderly cattle drive I have ever witnessed, Albertan cowboys could learn a few things from the Ol' Malo cattlemen. 😂 In closing Ol Malo offers a much more hands on approach to the stunning Laikipia region. To put it simply, Go you will not regret it. I will be back Andrew Kurtz…
