We picked Carnarvon Dale Lodge as they offered a game drive both in Amacala reserve and Shamwari, the bigger of the two. The lodge itself has a great family history and is reminiscent of the colonial settlers days. The day we arrived it was a blistering 44 deg, but were able to relax on the verhanda and were brought a...

My sense is that Carnarvon--with its excellent guide, Propie--puts a premium on working hard to give you the experience you desire. There was no doubt here that you are in Africa and the focus is on giving you an intimate, non-commercialized experience. Highly recommended!

We booked our trip to South Africa and 3 night stay at Carnarvon Dale at short notice (about 6 weeks before departure) and it was the few game reserves around PE that had availability. Having returned from the trip we feel incredibly lucky that this was the case given the great (relative) value a stay there represents and the most...

If you want to feel like you have taken a step back in time, this is the place for you. Old style hospitality, you feel more like a house guest than a paying customer. Roger and Maryan could not do enough to make our stay enjoyable, and our amazing guide Braun made a good experience an exceptional one. The lodge...

The house is rustic, no doubt. However, this is made very clear in the information and I was actually surprised at how nice it was. The 2 bed, 2 bathroom house also had a large living room with fridge and kettle. The bedrooms had electric blankets, hair dryers, complimentary shampoo etc. Old fashioned, yes, but that was half the charm....

We had a memorable 3 days at Carnarvon Dale in early February 2016. The accommodation was comfortable and clean and we had the 2 bedroom chalet all to ourselves. We were well looked after by the charming sisters who served us lunch and by Roger and Maryan for the evening meal. The highlight of our stay were the two early...

My wife and I spent 2 nights at Carnarvon Dale, together with my wife's sister and brother-in-law. We had 3 game drives, one of which in Shamwari. All the drives were SPECTACULAR. The bush walk on the last morning was however a flop - our very young guide obviously lacked the experience. We learned some interesting facts about plants and...

It's not easy to accept criticism but we've learnt it's for the best to do so graciously. Regarding the walk our young guide was on one of his first solo runs and confessed to me afterwards that he hadn't been able to deliver his best. He felt intimidated and unsure of himself. He has since received more training, not in...

We spent three nights at Carnarvon Dale in February 2016 and from the moment we arrived we knew it would be our kind of place. Roger and Maryan were absolutely wonderful hosts; thoughtful, there when we needed them, but otherwise unobtrusive. Meals were delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with our interesting and friendly hosts. Our room was spacious and...

My husband and I were looking through our many photos from our trip to South Africa in Dec 2015 - Jan 2016 and it was blatantly obvious (from the many hundreds of photos we had taken) that Carnarvon Dale and Amakhala was the absolute highlight of our entire trip! We spent three magical days with our gracious hosts, Maryann and...

We stayed at Carnavon Dale for two nights in January 2016. Our hosts Roger and Maryan went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. They were excellent hosts with a wealth of information about the area. The meals were delicious and they even catered for our vegan daughter. The accommodation was comfortable, clean and appropriate to the style...
