Kia Ora Joshua Thanks for the great review. Yes, the staff are passionate about the environment, and also what they do, and that does include more than rafting. That same passion extends to the Lodge vegetable gardens, cooking some great food, looking after horses and guiding treks. I hope the rest of your travels went well. Regards Btrian

Coming from Wellington we stayed here for a night. Next morning we went for the rafting. Both the lodge and the rafting was amazing experience. We came with 2 weeks old baby, our room were nice and warm when we arrived. Dinner was very tasty and the restaurant has very cozy ambiance. Not to mentioned very fair price. Our guide...

Stayed here for 1 night as part of Kiwi Experience in a 6 bed dorm. The roast dinner was absolutely wonderful: yorkshire pudding, roast chicken, roasted root veg, roasted potatoes, gravy, and peas. My only complaint is that the chicken was a bit dry, but overall it was among the top meals ate in New Zealand. The breakfast and lunch...

Kia ora Thanks anonhoneybadger for taking the time to write a review of your River Valley experience. We really liked reading that you rated our food so highly. Our chefing team do like to get that sort of feedback. Did you know that many of the vegetables are grown in our on site organic vegetable garden? All the best on...

Stayed here last night on the kiwi experience (June 2016) and have nothing but admiration for this lodge. The whole setting is absolutely amazing, at the bottom of a valley with wooden main lodge with picturesque log fire as centre piece to warm yourself against on the cold evening and morning before the bus (if you're not going the activities)....

Kia ora Vicky Yes, no cell phone signal - people actually have to actually talk to each other! From our observations this is quite unsettling for some folks, but once you get over the shock it is, as you point out, an opportunity to relink with nature. Thanks for this review. All the best Brian

We stayed 3 nights, we did the harmony with horses half day ride. It was an absolutley amazing experience, getting to know the horse and then ride out, up hill and down dale, and despite it all I wasn't too sore the next day. We stayed in an ensuite room, the bed was huge, the pillows many and the linens...

The double cabin we stayed in was nice and had comfy beds, and was worth the little extra compared to the dorm. In the morning we did the white water rafting and we had a great time, it was a real adrenaline rush! Our guide was really nice and talkative and we felt very trusting of him too.

You could easily miss this place as its off the beaten track, but don't! We stayed in an en suite river view room but they have rooms for all budgets. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. A family run business now into its 3rd generation of raft guides, River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you. ... more   less
