The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. A family run business now into its 3rd generation of raft guides, River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you.

Had a great time with kiwi experience at this place earlier this week. It's run really well, and is super friendly to all its guests. Only thing missing is a pool table/darts for evening entertainment, however its a difficult one to fit into the building design as it's a pub/restaurant. Either way, great food and hospitality. Also the water rafting was epic! Can definitely recommend this, class photos too! However Max really needs to work on his jokes...

Kia Ora Andy, Thanks for leaving us a review, glad you enjoyed your stay and the rafting. I will pass on your feedback about the pool table/darts - we would love to have some options like this but unfortunately just don't have the space for it at the moment (but maybe one day!). I'll also pass your feedback on to Max but think he may need a lot of work... Kind regards, Dani

Stayed three nights here in March 2019. The river front lodge bedrooms are cosy and warm - not luxurious, but certainly comfortable. Food is hearty and wholesome, but the real delight for me was the horse riding. I did a half day ride then two full days. Autumn was my excellent guide and the horses were so beautiful. The natural horsemanship style means the horses are happy and relaxed and give your their very best - all without a bit in the mouth! Loved it! Autumn looked after me on some steep trails and we had such a great time. No huge rides here with loads of people, just me and my guide and my lovely horse of course! The views on the hills are amazing. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

I can not recommend this place enough. My wife and I spent the best day of our two week trip here! We rafted the Rangitikei river and it was the most fun rafting experience we have ever had (also rafted similar day trips in Costa Rica and Canada). It was a VERY cold day, but the trip was still amazingly fun. The guides are very very knowledgeable (we went with Paule and Tom). The family who owns the hotel is so incredibly friendly and hospitable. They went above and beyond several times during our stay. Great food as well at the restaurant! Would love to come visit again for more than just one night.

What another great stay at the lodge. Finished our stay with a great morning on the river white water rafting. Food was outstanding and the staff and friends outstanding. Worth the trip Accommodation was very comfortable and the seminar space next to the river was great.

We stayed here as part of our Kiwi Experience trip and enjoyed it. Despite having to walk for a short while to get to the accommodation it was lovely once we got there. The rooms were nice and everyone in my room had the best nights sleep. The staff were helpful and friendly and it was actually quite nice to have no signal or wifi for an evening, although many people may find this to be a downside. It is annoying that you have to pay for certain amenities already on site when there is not much else to do there, such as the hot tub, but we enjoyed the experience. The kitchen is not great for a large group, very small with few cooking facilities but that is why the offer the roast to eat which I heard people enjoyed a lot. It was a nice place to stop and slow down a little but I couldn't stay for more than a night as I imagine it would get quite boring if you don't have money to spend on activities.

Kia Ora, Thanks for visiting River Valley and leaving us a review. Glad you enjoyed your stay and found the rooms to be nice and comfortable. If you stay in one of our ensuite rooms you do get complimentary spa access and free wifi, but we do not include this with the budget rooms. We are an adventure lodge so we do encourage people to try our activities, we appreciate not everyone has the budget for this so there are free things to do around the lodge - take a swim in the river, take the trolley to the other side, volleyball, chess, petanque, relax on the beach by the river etc. A lot of people are happy to stay days or weeks without getting bored. We hope you can visit again sometime, enjoy the rest of Kiwi Experience. Kind regards, Dani
