We stayed 3 nights with Maria and family. She has put together a nice program, you get lots of time on the river, and we spotted some absolutely amazing things like bull elephant, proboscis monkeys, hornbill, eagles, macaques, orangutans....the list goes on. We also went to a fun market in town which is on weekends. Maria's is an excellent and creative cook. As others have said in their reviews, be prepared for a very basic facility that feels primitive and even in disrepair sometimes. The toilets and showers are shared among quite a few people. We were the only guests, and I think if we had needed to share bathrooms with more people it worked have not been workable. If you want more amenities our privacy they are plenty of choices in the area, but we were really glad we got this experience.

Me and my boyfriend stayed at Maria's house for 2 nights, incl. 3 meals/day + all the river cruises & one night walk. The value for money you get here is incredible. The entire house + garden and tea house is pefect for relaxing, everything is basic but very clean and the food is great! Maria's brother in law was our guide and he's the best orang utan spotter we've seen - we were always the first to spot them! The entire family is very friendly and helpful. I'd definitely recommend this place for your stay at Kinabatangan!

We stayed at Maria’s homestay for 1 night which probably wasn’t quite long enough. The family made us all feel very welcome, cooked us some delicious food - chicken with ginger was excellent. We were very lucky and managed to see Elephants, Orangutang, crocodiles, wild pigs, lots of hornbills and kingfishers, Monitor Lizards, mangrove snake and lots of other animals! Would highly recommend staying with Maria if you are visiting Borneo and want to get out into the jungle and see the wildlife. Thankyou for having us!

We really enjoyed our two night stay with Maria and her family. Maria was a lovely host and made us feel right at home. Our meals were delicious and our room was comfortable. The bathrooms were outside but it was fine for us. We saw a lot of animals on our guided tours. We decided to pay extra to do an elephant tour and we were so lucky to see two pygmy elephants. I'd highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a homestay.

Incredible stay at the Sukau river Homestay! Maria is a great host, who clearly loves the wildlife of the kinabatangan river. The cruises were amazing, with our guide Shah always ensuring we had plenty of time to view the animals whilst being respectful of their space. And the food was so so tasty! Cannot recommend this place more, a really authentic experience viewing amazing wildlife with a local family! 10/10 !

We stayed with Maria homestay in Sukau this year. I cannot say enough about this family or place. We were accepted into this family completely, as a group of 5 we were looked after. The local home cooked food to the guides in the family who showed us their area and shared their lives. A very real and wonderful way to see the jungle. I would highly recommended.

Firstly I'd like to preface that this is absolutely one of the best places to stay along the Kinabatangan if you're looking for a personal touch to the tours and a great understanding of the area. The tours were run perfectly, and we had full control over how long we wanted to stay with the respective wildlife, what we wanted to see etc. The knowledge of Maria and her brother Shah was spot on, and they were more than happy to answer any and all questions, and take any detours we liked. They really made an effort to find everything we were looking for in terms of the wildlife (elephants, tarsiers, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, gibbons, red and silver leaf monkeys, pythons and not to mention all the birds - they were able spot some seriously hidden animals!). Their dedication was really above and beyond what we expected and could have hoped for, which is why it breaks my heart to leave only an average review. Many of the reviewers state the accommodation as 'good' which simply isn't the case and I feel reviews should be fair and informative. While I really enjoyed the garden and the river overview area, the rooms were not clean, smelled strongly of damp and urine and the toilets and shower were extremely dirty, mold ridden and unkempt (I advise using flip flops in the shower...). Be aware that it is also naturally extremely hot in the rooms and the fan, while serviceable also hasn't been cleaned likely since its inception. I don't say this to be harsh, just so people are aware of the reality of the place. If you are looking for comfortable accommodations look elsewhere. The food, while tasty for the most part, also needs some work. Portions were consistently small in terms of everything but the rice, choice is definitely not given here (understandable) and we had the same dish (tuna bathed in soy, with rice and a side veg) 3 times in a row. Dietary requirements were also forgotten often as we were served chicken (my wife is vegetarian, and this was stated prior) so make sure to hammer home your requirements :). Again, all sufficient but folks should be aware. Having said all that, I still highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend the place which I'm aware is unusual. The dedication, stories and experience Mariahs' family shared is unbeatable and made our 4 day stay well worth the pain points mentioned above. If you are a comfort fiend, this is not the place for you - I left the above in the review for folks to know what they're getting into and as feedback for improvement for Mariah and her awesome family. If you're looking for the best tour experience we've had in Malaysia? Then stay here 🙂. I don't say that lightly!

Response from SukauRiverHomestay, Owner at Sukau River Homestay
Responded Jun 23, 2019
Greeting Viktor , Firstly , I would like to thanking you for choosing to spend your holiday in Sabah particularly Sukau for some wildlife expedition and I believe this due to the vast experience and knowledge of your field guide . on the other hand, I personally went for some through investigation about the room condition as you been mention it in your review . basically, we ensure all thing been done before guest check in to the room . basic thing of cleaning . sweeping , mopping and make sure all the bed sheet / pillow case were change . Honestly , after running an homestay for almost a decade , I myself , do no want our guest to had a terrible experience in the room since 30% of your time you will spend it sleeping in the room . But , probably our cleaning standard was not good enough to ensure the cleanliness. At our home, we have 5 cats ( 3 adult and 2 kitten ) which are roaming freely as it should be like life in the peaceful village like Sukau . I put some gentle reminder note to remind the guest not to open your door of your room if you out on a field and probably some of this kitten went inside of your room and do their 'business". living in a warm country like Malaysia , there is nothing much I can do about the heat and humidity . during one of my sharing info session , I did mention , to lessen the discomfort due to the heat , one can take a nice cool shower , or stay near the fan ( probably you notice with all the fan that is available in almost all corner of our home or take a drinking water that a available 24 hours . I guess, none of this method work on some people. when I received your booking and food requirement , it mention your wife only can eat seafood/ fish/ vegetable . our cook , was preparing it and in the same time also she has to be fair to the other guest by serving other dishes and of course there were choices of vegetable as well. we just regret it that we couldn't gave your wife more that she wishes due to the time of your visit , its a one day after the Eid Mubarak and all the shop / market that nearby our village were closed . 80% of our food that we serve on the table came from people around our village . ( vegetable farmer , fishermen ) . one of the best thing that I did in my life so far , is when I decided to open our 70 years old home for an homestay . it is incredible how such a tiny organization like us can contribute to many souls and life in the community therefore when I received such a comment like this whether in dampen our spirit ? No, because we love what we been doing here and I honestly cannot ignore all the other 95% of our guest that so lucky landed in our door step and experience this place completely the opposite . Have a great day:)) Sincerely , Maria Amit . The Matriarch.

We stayed two nights as part of an 8 night tour in Sabah. The accommodation was good and sharing it with the family was great as you appreciate the local life more. Her spoken English was brilliant and she is very knowledgeable about the wildlife of the area, spotting birds, naming them just by hearing their sound takes some training. We have seen and photographed more species, birds and mammals then we could have asked for. If you are a keen or even a professional photographer you will not be disappointed. The river cruises where comprehensive and on every trip we came back with new animal sightings. An unforgettable experience.

I am a bit late writing my review, however we had a fabulous time. I expected it to be basic, however it was probably even more so than I was expecting. Once we got past that I had no complaints. Maria and her family were absolutely lovely and went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. We went with our two children (6 and 9) and they had a great time fishing, playing with the family children and feeding the chickens and ducks, not to mention the boat trips. The food was so much better than I expected and it was great for the kids to try home cooked Malaysian food. The boat trips were so amazing and we saw everything we wanted to see. On the last night we still hadn't seen an elephant which we were disappointed about, however when we were just going to bed the family heard there was one just up the river, so they called out to us and we jumped into the boat (the kids still in their pajamas!) and raced up to see it. Seeing the beautiful elephant was the highlight of my trip and I am forever grateful that they went out of their way to show it to us. The kids still talk about this part of our Borneo adventure and we all loved it. My only tip is to bring snacks with you - you get three meals a day but that is all. It was nice to have some snacks to tide us and the kids over until the next meal.
