Well the hotel looks charming and is indeed well appointed with pleasant rooms, as long as you don't take one on the sea front due to very busy road and railway immediately opposite. HOWEVER, this is where the good news stops! I have stayed at thousands of hotels worldwide and never been met with such poor service and money grabbing attitude. When you call to book the room the very first question is Cash or Credit (I should have been wary at this point) - they clearly want you to book with a credit card as it helps the scam that comes later. First, almost minor point, having stayed at hotels worldwide I am use to the standard of 11.00 or 12.00 check out... not at Liar de Capitans. At exactly 10,00 we have knocking on our room door and a simultaneous call from the reception desk saying that is now past 10.00 (by a few seconds) we have automatically to pay 15 euro charge for a "late" check out... 10.00 is not late! I later checked my card report and find that they made this first unauthorized transaction within minutes of making the claim on us for a "late" check out. The biggest part of this whole money grabbing scheme comes after you have left the hotel. Within 45 minutes of departure we received a communication that due to a small scratch (about 1 cm long from the photo sent although it was hard to even see anything wrong in the picture) on the door frame leading into the room we occupied they have - without approval - charged our card for an additional 50 euro. There was no prior discussion, no pleasantries and no request - just an automatic charge for something we did not do and which was not authorised. We did not leave the hotel with our card details so they put the 50 euro charge through as an online e-commerce transaction - this was not an online transaction and it was not approved. Despite many calls to the hotel on the two days following our stay the manager refused to talk with us and would only reiterate their threats to take money as they pleased from our card via the unfortunate russian girl (I wonder is she had a visa!?) in reception. The receptionist told us that the manger said it must be us who made this small scratch because "the manger, the cleaner and the receptionist each inspect each room (obviously on their hands and knees with a magnifying glass) in detail after every guest has left" - I doubt this is true and in any case, I never even heard of such a crazy practice at any other hotel; it's clear that this is the standard pitch to defend their fraud. Though my card company is currently processing the chargeback for the unauthorised transactions we incurred as a result of this hotel's dishonest and uncourteous practice it does not address the horrific experience and considerable time needed to deal with the issue post our stay. I expect the Liar hotel to suddenly appear on tripadvisor and refute these claims but please be very aware - if you stay here then pay cash, do not leave any card details! Better to stay somewhere else though, where honest and polite customer service, not money grabbing fraud, is the hotel's priority. Please also note that we were not asked to sign any contract on arrival or departure. Also, thet the rooms do not have the normal fire safety evacuation information and route posted by the doors - something which I would assume is a legal requirement in Catalonia, as in most EU and worldwide hotels.

Dear Guest, First of all, we would like to thank you for paying special attention to our hotel. I wanted to add some details to your story. 1) Regarding check out time - when you made a reservation you were warned about check in and check out time. In addition, after making a reservation, a written confirmation of your reservation was sent to your e-mail, which also indicated the time of check in and check out. Therefore, it was not a secret or surprise for you. 2) While you were at our hotel, some things were damaged (door jamb and mattress). According to the conditions of our hotel, as well as they do hotels all over the world, if damage was caused to property of the hotel - it should be reimbursed by those who caused this damage. This is written in the information that is in all rooms of the hotel, including where you stayed. It also says that in case of damage the fine will be removed from your card. We immediately sent information to you, including photographs of the damage and a detailed description. although the cost of the fine was much less than the real value of the damage. We value our reputation and greatly value our customers, but we expect our guests to respect our property. Dear guest, all that has been done - was done with prior notice. And you were informed about everything related to your stay at our hotel. 3) with regard to hotel employees, as well as all the necessary procedures, the fulfillment of which is necessary in accordance with the laws of Catalonia - we have all the necessary documents confirming our fulfillment of these obligations. Thank you again for staying with us. Looking forward to seeing you again

We enjoyed a brief stay at Lar de Capitans Hotel is El Masnou. We had the Julia suite which is essentially the third floor with a large balcony. The suite is very large, particularly by European standards. We found the room exceptionally comfortable. The room affords an excellent view of the sea and the balcony is quite large. The property is located near the Ocala train station, a stop for regional trains. This made it easy for us to travel from Barcelona. There are numerous small shops and restaurants nearby. The street in front of the hotel is very busy and there is some road noise. The property has a lift. There’s a restaurant on the ground floor which seemed popular but we didn’t try it. We found the staff to be charming and helpful. They also spoke very good English which was helpful when there was an issue with our booking. Overall, a great experience. Highly recommended.

Dear Ignatius, Thank you in advance for all your comments through Tripadvisor. This reviews make us very happy and we will share it with all the staff. Paula room is the real jewel of the hotel with its 40 m2, the king size bed, the fantastic jacuzzi and it's big terrace of 25 m2 with sea views. It's true that there is a road in front of the hotel, but this room is in the third floor and at night it's very quiet. However, the windows have double crystals to avoid the noise. We hope you will come back soon and try our Sotacel Restaurant. Looking forward to seeing you very soon, Best regards, Hotel - Restaurant Llar de Capitans.

This is a very nice hotel set in the house of an old sea captain. Rooms were very nice. Air Conditioning not as great as you hope, but I'm American and I don't find most European AC to be very good. :) We ate in the restaurant there also and the food was wonderful. Beach is nice and a very short work to go under the street and rail.

My teenage daughter and I stayed in a large room on the first floor with a balcony overlooking the beach. It was clean and spacious with comfortable beds and a huge bathroom. The shower looked a bit unappealing but was hot and powerful - perfect after a day at the beach. The hotel is easy to get to by public transport from the airport - the A1 bus into the centre then a direct train ride out, both bus and train run frequently. We spent the mornings on the beach and the afternoons exploring the city. Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful. They offered sun shades and beach towels and even provided a coffee maker with a generous supply of coffee pods, perfect for breakfast on the balcony with croissants from the bakery next door.

This is a nice little hotel. We had the only room on the top, 3rd, floor. It has a nice deck large deck looking out at the beach. There's a road and trainline before the beach, but the trains are quiet and the road not too buy or loud. Air Conditioning in Europe is usually not too good and the AC in this room was a little better than that. The room was spacious and the people working there were friendly and helpful. Beaches were nice and the water excellent.
