Stayed for one night in a lovely wood panelled room which gets very warm after having the heater on. Evening meal was around the dining room table with the other guests and the owner, who has a wealth of knowledge of birds and where to find them. Breakfast was especially lovely with toast and homemade jam.

We stayed in Furen Lodge for one night as part of a long birdwatching tour of Japan. This was convenient for the nature centre just a few yards away. Matsui San was very knowledgeable about his birds and also has a great library of field guides to refer to. We we given a lovely evening meal around the family dining... More

Lodge Furen is a wonderful little place, nestled on the lake shore with tremendous hospitality and Japanese tradition. The rooms are wood panelled and nice and cosy; just what you want after icy cold days out with Eagles, cranes, ducks and auks! The best thing though is the trenendous hosts, Take and his wife. Homemade jams for breakfast (including rosehip... More

We stayed here on part of a bird-watching adventure with the host as our guide. He is very knowledgable and friendly, and we received a master-class in bird-watching. The lodge is friendly and very clean, with typical B&B facilities. The hostess is also very friendly and the food is excellent. The rooms are quite large, and immaculate.

I have stayed here twice - once for a winter bird watching trip and once for a summer trip. Both times I was impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of our hosts. And, the food is exquisite. But you need to like Japanese food. I told our hosts in advance that I didn't eat sushi or sashimi and that was... More

As the other reviewers have noted this is a birders lodge for birders. Taku San is extremely knowledgeable and has a long history of watching the birds of Hokkaido. He's happy to share and encourage visitors. Taku was helpful in onward bookings for other bird watching places to stay.

This accommodation offers the opportunity to stay in the home of someone who is passionate and knowledgable about birds, speaks good English, and who can help, for example, to arrange boat trips. Our bedroom was fairly basic and the toilet and bathroom was shared with other guests. Meals are taken at a large table and the evening meals were some... More

If Red-crowned Crane and White-tailed Sea Eagle from the breakfast table sound good, then this is the place for you. In winter, when Lake Furen is frozen, you are likely to see Steller's Sea Eagles from the breakfast table too! Friendly and welcoming hosts, great healthy food, simple, but pleasant accommodations, and all within walking distance of Lake Furen and... More

Comfortable, simple-style minshuku. Owner has a great library of English books about birds and is happy to answer questions about local wildlife. Food may be challenging for foreigners, though breakfast includes toast, jam and coffee. Unusually for Japan, the owner keeps the house at exactly the right temperature - neither too hot (like most hotels) nor too cold (like some... More

My wife and I spent three nights with the Matsuos at their mishuku. We wanted to get to the tip of Hokkaido, away from cities, and do some walking and birding. Couldn't have found a better spot: right on the boundary of a sanctuary run by the Wild Bird Society of Japan, and Mr. Matsuo is an avid birder and... More
