From the very moment we stepped inside of this ryokan, we felt so welcomed by the friendly English speaking staff. They went out of their way to make us feel at home and gave us lots of useful information, maps and brochures of what to do and see in Yakushima. The food was excellent and plentiful, and with the option of western or Japanese breakfast. I opted for the western style breakfast but they over heard me saying to my friends that I will miss having the miso soup though... and the next morning was a bowl of miso soup placed next to my western style breakfast! The location is great, just behind a sandy beach and with wooden walkways through the lush vegetation. We stayed in a Japanese style tatami room, which was spacious and comfortable, falling asleep to the sound of the rolling waves. There are two onsens, one indoor and one outdoor with sea view and soft rocks to relax on... When I return to this amazing island I will definitely stay here again. On our last day, we had a... In October of 2006 we decided to include the small island of Yakushima in our tour of Japan. We were attracted by the ancient yakusugi (cedar trees), the snow monkeys, and an island pretty well undiscovered by non-Japanese tourists.

Our problem was to find a place to stay. The standard guide books and web sites just mention Yakushima briefly, and the hotels and ryokan's web sites are all in Japanese. We took a deep breath and booked the Tsuwano-ya. What a find!

Yuko and her husband Tokuhisa were very friendly hosts and Yuko was very excited to be able to practice her excellent English. If you send an email in English, she should be able to reply in English. Ask her about her cats!

Tsuwano-ya is a ryokan, but don't worry: it's not stuffy and "difficult". Most of the guests at Tsuwano-ya are young Japanese couples keen to explore the rainforests. There are about 15 rooms, some with futon and some with beds. The three connected buildings...
