This is a really charming ryokan in a very wonderful setting. When we stayed here we were the only guests on the first night. There were a couple more on the second night. The manager told us that lots of foreign guests had cancelled because of the Kumamoto earthquake. It is a shame since there was no impact at all... More

This review is based on my two visits of Kurokawa and this specific onsen. It's very hard to explain how amazing are both! Kurokawa is a small village in the middle of the mountains, full of onsen and extremely green and calm. The Okonoyu onsen is probably one of the best in town. It's little be up further from the... Kurokawa is a tiny town inside mountain. It's quite unique because the whole town is full of onsen and ryokans. We are lucky to go there during winter when they decorate the canal in the middle of the town with lanterns. At night, it's magical to see the lanterns lit up along the canal. Okunoyu is very beautiful and nicely... More

After a 2-1/2 hour drive from Fukuoka, we arrived at the besutiful village of Kurokawa. We were greeted by a team of helpful people from Kurokawa Onsen. Checking into our room was easy and we were impressed with the hotel and rooms. Walk through the village was pleasant with many surprises - a small stream that explains how the village... More

This is one of the best onsen ryokan I ever stayed. The environment (in November) is blossomed with the magnificent autumn colours. The ryokan has a transfer service to pick up & drop off guests at the Kurokawa bus station. It is really worth the 3-hour bus journey from Hakata Bus Terminal. Okunoyu has several indoor & outdoor onsen for... More

My husband and I stayed in the special western room with a private onsen on the patio. This was a tranquil, memorable and relaxing experience. The ryokan staff was courteous, friendly and spoke enough English for us to communicate fine. We loved our meals here, we stayed here a total of two nights and none of the meals repeated. Even... A bit isolated from the main village but love the mountain and quiet location. Our room was nextby the water stream and we can hear the nice water sound throughout the stay. We have a small private onsen bath with excellent view of the river and the trees. We went on a rainy and windy day. Several public onsen to... More

Stayed a couple nights early in early Nov. Taking into account what we paid, this was the experience, in summary: 1) Zombie reception. No greetings on arrival. Didn't speak a word of English (which is fine by me) BUT made no effort to help when we asked about how to get around the area. Bordered on rude when we asked... More

After a few false starts we found the hotel, up a little lane next to a river - isolated and beautiful but only 5 mins from the village. We were met outside reception by the staff - someone parked our car for us, someone else showed us to our room. We were on the first floor of the main block... More

I researched many hotels before finally settling with this choice. It was not a bad choice. But for my family, we preferred something else. The hotel was very traditional, and the nice onsens were "mixed gender". I could not get myself to be brave enough to do that. So I didn't get to experience the beautiful riverside onsens and the...
