Ryukeien provided a really good value ryokan experience. We arrived to a delicious keiseki dinner served in the traditional room and the hosts were subtle and considerate. The room had a balcony which was great to "chill out" in the cold winter night sipping on some heartwarming sake. They had both an indoor and outdoor onsen for couples. However, the... More

Very pleasant trip. Located next to a river stream, the place was well maintained and kept a very cultural and untouristy feel. Owners were hospitable and provided us with great service, yet maintaining the privacy that we desired. A memorable stay. Definitely need to... More

Getting to Ryukeien was a bit difficult, since it is not located in the Kurokawa village. We arrived by "Odan Bus" at the Kurokawa Spa bus stop, but even though we emailed our arrival time to the Ryokan, nobody was there to pick us up. Guests for other hotels were picked up, and their drivers told us we have to... More

Staying in a proper Ryokan with Onsen is usually not for people travelling on a tight budget, costing hundreds of dollars per person per night. Any cheaper Ryokans usually are not the proper experience. This place was a great find. Found on a western booking site (Ryokans usually are not), Ryukeien was by no means cheap but was less than... This Traditional Japanese Hotel is in the middle of a triangle just outside the ASO mountain park. It is 114ks from Fukuoka, 69ks from Kumamoto, 80Ks from Beppu. It is located on road 442 a couple of Ks from Kurokawa. The reason I am giving the specific location is because the Ryokan can barely be seen from the road and... More

We haven't been to many ryokans: they are just too pricey for us to stay there so often. However, we usually plan for a "splurge night" every time we go Japan, and Ryukeien was chosen to be the highlight of our Kyushu trip. Boy, it was an experience to remember. Room: the one we had was the furthest away from... More

This hotel is about 10 min drive from Kurokawa town. They came to pick up us from bus station and send us to explore the onsen town before bring us back to the ryokan to check in after 4pm. This ryokan has six private onsen rooms which you can enjoy exclusively by yourself or with family. Dinner and breakfast was... More

IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE NIGHT to spare for Kurokawa, this is the place to be for people who want to wake up to sounds of a nearby stream, chirping birds and fine Japanese hospitality. They have seven rooms in total, four with private balconies overlooking a garden. The room we had, which was large by Japanese standards, had... More

They are located outside the main town about 1.5km away but away from all the crowd and tourist which is just what I have in mind! The staff can speak a little English and have been very hospitable to take good care of us. The room balcony opens up to a garden and it was absolutely fabulous to wake up... More
