First a real shock with these huge hotel buildings and a large shop in the main lobby. A real maze to get to the bedroon, but the corridors are best in class as far as decorations: costumes and wall paintings. The room was quite large with 2 western armchairs and good wifi. Japanese dinner was delicious. Oustanding service, hotel had... More

Enormous hotel that caters to tour groups in busses. Attached hotsprings offer many different baths, showerhead in bathroom was nice. Breakfast soso. Too much noise from hallway in American style room.

We stayed at this Ryokan for one night, only. The very spacious tatami room has a tokonoma (hanging scroll) and a bay area with a small table and two western style chairs (one wide, the other one small). It also has a flat screen TV and a safe. While you are at dinner staff will make up your room and... More

Wonderful Japanese hospitality expected with unique view from room. Good outside bath experience at top floor. Colorful and pretty meal presentation. Considering from this size and location, more bilingual signage should considered.

This is a wonderful hotel. JR Kotohira Station is within walking distance. The hotel also provides shuttle services to/from the Station. Take the package with breakfast and inner. The breakfast is of buffet type. Not fantastic but good enough. Sometimes can be a bit crowded. But the dinner is great. Not Buffet type but a proper Kaiseki Cuisine. It would... More

When we arrived we were given a western style room. It was unchanged from the fifties and the whole floor smelled of smoke. After we had a good giggle I went to the front desk and very politely asked if we could have a tatami room. For a very reasonable upgrade fee we were moved and 10 minutes later we... More

It's a huge Japanese style resort nested in the woods. The room was big with sliding doors, very Japanese, very clean. Sleaping on a tatami is not for everyone, but there were additional futon mats in the closet in the room for people who had difficulties. The pillows are buckwheat shell filled and they are incredible. There were yukatas in... More

Kotosankaku is located near the entry point of the stone steps (more than 1,600 steps to the very top) to the Kotohiragu Shrine (Konpirasan), the main reason for people to visit this city of Kotohira. Like many large-scale Japanese-style hotels, it looks like a western-style building from outside, but its inside is completely Japanese. Kotosankaku appears relatively new with a... More

This huge "ryokan" has a hidden japanese side with the japanese rooms : when you are ushered, you are really in Japan with sliding doors, tatami, kimono and so on. Staff is friendly but very professionnal. Meals are included (dinner and breakfast) and really delicious in the pure tradition. Onsen offer also a unique experience (two in two different buildings)... More
