Hmmm for the price I was expecting more. We must have been spoilt at our previous ryokan stays. The food was very average (we had dinner and breakfast) and there was a lot of fuss for ok quality food. Room a bit tired, ok view. Nothing special overall for the price and we would not recommend to our friends/family

This is undoubtedly a gd onsen that is centrally located within the town area - short walk to the city centre and the onsen provides shuttle to the train station. The establishment is probably closer to a 4.5 stars rather than 5 and we find there are gaps in service levels. Having stayed in numerous onsens, we find the service... More

It's a traditonal onsen hotel in Japan. Therefore I guess many extentions were carried out and, as a result, whole building becomes very comlicated. Onsen (hot spring) is very good and a dinner, a breakfast as well. Everywhere is clean. If you want to feel traditional atmosphere of Japanese onsen around there, I recommend this hotel. I think the price... More

Good location and Nice Ryokan! The price is good if you compare other Ryokan with private onsen. Food is good but not super. If you want to try Ryokan with private onsen, their price is good. The service is ok for modern Ryokan. If you don't want to pay too much for room with private onsen, you still can book... More

We stayed one night at Kotohira Kadan. This was my second ryokan experience after my trip last year to Kanazawa, so my expectations were quite high. Overall we were happy with our stay - the experience was not exactly comparable to our previous ryokan stay, as Kotohira Kadan is relatively larger in terms of scale and thus lacked the homey-feel... The location of the hotel is perfect that it is close enough to the temple area but also slightly hidden up to give the privacy. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The architecture of the hotel itself is also very interesting blending in modern and traditional elements. The room are nice and the food is good if you choose... More

The hotel claims over 400-year history and now part of it modernized in many ways for their facilities and services. The room (with tatami) we stayed was very comfortable and with great view to the city and mountain. Their out door hot spring was very soothing as well. The dinner was more in the modern flare while the breakfast was... More

The hotel occupies a favoured position overlooking a river and beautiful gardens, the hotel's own and the shrine garden across the river. Service is amazingly good and the place is stunning. Food is decent but not great. The hotel is also great value and has a wonderful Onsen.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled in the gardens lush with green, there are Sukiya-zukuri Japanese houses which use traditional Japanese architectural styles, and the Konpira Spring Kotohira Kadan, a traditional Japanese inn that has brilliantly harmonized with the modern architecture. There are records of famous litterateurs from Japanese history having lodged here, and they were able to immerse themselves in their creations while gazing at the gardens that vibrantly change with the seasons. Within the grounds, there is a Japanese-style garden that uses the sloping land of the mountain which is rare for inns and hotels, and guests can go on excursions to view the area. And, it is possible to see Mount Iino, known for the townscape of Kotohira and by its nickname of Sanuki-Fuji, from the large bath. Won't you come rest your mind while experiencing Japanese culture at the Kotohira Kadan, an inn in the gardens of Konpira Hot Spring Village? ... more   less

“The hotel provide a very high level service standard. When you book you will get a personal email from the staff and before your arrival (few days before) you will also get a confirmation email. Kotohira is a small city and traveling from Tokyo or Osaka you will need to stop at Okayama station (shinkansen station). From Okayama you take a regional JR to Kotohira. So, make sure you tell the hotel what time you will arrive and they will send a driver to pick you up. Everything you need from the hotel you can ask in advance and they will likely help you. Not all the staff speak english, so keep that in mind.”
