I stayed at Kiya Ryokan with a group of eight other people, some Japanese, some American. Upon our arrival, we were given a fantastic tour in both English and Japanese. The history of the building is fascinating, and its transformation into a modern (yet still traditional) Ryokan is stunning. Many famous artists and writers have stayed and left their mark all over the building. The beds are cozy, the ofuro is luxurious, and the scenery is bar-none. The little shop featured unique art and souvenirs that I actually wanted to buy (in my experience rare).

The breakfast was delicious, though light (just how I like it) with amazing fresh-baked pastries, orange juice, and great coffee.

Two features which were unnecessary but added to the experience immensely were the bluetooth speaker system (which hooked up seamlessly to my iPhone) and the automatic white screens on the 2nd floor which can be colored with a cool LED lighting system.

I recently spent a night in Misasa, in order to hike up Mitokusan the next day. Staying at Kiya Ryokan was a terrific experience. The owner came to pick me up at Kurayoshi Station (after a call from the friendly and helpful tourist information office staff) and was very welcoming; he was also good about trying to converse with me in English, as I have limited Japanese. The staff was very friendly and the dinner and breakfast very good. They have different onsen ofuros to choose from, and the room I stayed in was spacious and comfortable. The owner also helped me get to Mitokusan from the ryokan (I went in early June, which is the off-season, so it wasn't too crowded), and then back to Kurayoshi when I was departing. I would definitely stay here again, allowing more days for experiencing Misasa--one night/day wasn't enough! More

“The room I stayed in was very spacious, with a small stocked refrigerator, TV, safe, A/C, a small bathroom, and a separate (smoking) "patio" with another sink. Yukata, bath towel and washcloth were included.”
