This was my first trip to Japan and my stay at Fukudaya was my dream come true. There are two hot spring baths, inside and outside. I preferred the outside as you could hear the nearby river. So relaxing. The food was absolutely amazing. Authentic cuisine, very fresh and served in traditional Japanese dishes. The tatami room was very comfortable.... More

This ryokan is very charming. The rooms have beautiful views of the river and/or garden. The two baths (inside and outside) are great and can be used privately all through the night and early morning, which is great for families. The food is very nice and includes local and seasonal vegetables and fish.

Fukudaya was such a beautiful, warm introduction to the Japanese countryside and to true Japanese culture, cuisine, and relaxation. For me as a westerner with relatively no prior experience in Japan, not really knowing what to expect, I can't imagine having a more enjoyable time than I did. The small inn is situated across a small river, and the only... More

We were warmly welcomed by the staffs upon arrival. The surrounding of the ryokan is so quiet, peaceful and beautiful as well. The room is tidy and clean. During our visit, we were told that there is a new program going on in the ryokan which is the 'kimono experience'. One special thing about the kimono is that it was... More

Fukudaya -- This gracious inn was one of the highlights of our trip. The inn has been beautifully maintained for over four generations and has kept all its traditional charm. It felt like we were experiencing Japanese culture at it’s best, just by relaxing with tea in our peaceful room above the river. The hot spring baths were exceptional (2... More

Fukudaya was excellent in every way. The food was delicious, the baths were beautiful and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The area surrounding Fukudaya was beautiful as well. The place is good for couples, with friends, and even with children. Place you must visit!

There is no place in the world that I could find more relaxing than this stunning retreat. With the lines of Kawabata's "Dancing Girl of Izu" ringing between every tree and babbling with the river, you can do no better than the Hotel Fukudaya to enjoy country side Tokyo.

I went here with my friends. This place is famous for Izu no Odoriko, a novel written about the area. I think a movie was made about the inn as well! The area was beautiful with hikes close by. The inn is very traditional and extremely comfortable. Our room was very scenic, with a river running right outside the window.... More

My girlfriend and her husband brought us here, they live in Japan and so we relied on them to pick a traditional Japanese onsen/inn and we're glad we came here. This place is known for the novel "The Izu dancer" and so it has history here. The hot springs (onsen) are indoors as well as outdoors (3 to choose from)... More

We were warmly welcome by the host and they offered us the best room overlooking the river which was really wonderful. Room that nobel prize winner Mr Yasunari Kawabata stayed before. Dinner and breakfast was excellent and the staffs there were very friendly. The hot springs were great too. We enjoyed the open air the most. Quiet and beautiful nature... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Fukudaya's 8 tatami-floored rooms boast 134 years of history. Nobel-prize winning author Yasunari Kawabata's widely loved novel "The Dancing Girl of Izu" takes place at this very inn, and over the years all six separate movies based on the book have been filmed here. Escape from the every-day as you relax to the murmur of the river; at Fukudaya you enter the quiet world of the novel. Three natural hot spring baths are constantly overflowing, and you can reserve any of them at your pleasure. The movies have featured the wooden kaya bath, open from the very beginning. You can enjoy the clear blue skies in the open-air bath or choose to relax, warm, under the stars. For those who like it piping-hot, the stone bath will keep you satisfied. At mealtime, your table is piled high with local dishes from the sea and the hills. Succulent gold eye fish cooked to perfection, deep-fried scorpion fish karaage, wild boar hotpot, and many other dishes are available. 1879 ... more   less
