A traditional ryokan with a beautiful onsen in a natural, river setting. A wonderful place to experience a traditional Japanese way of life in the ryokan and then to unwind in a gorgeous natural setting by soaking in the outdoor onsens along the river.

We stayed only one night at this onsen. We made our own way which involve taking the Shinkansen to Takasaki Station, changing to a local train to Minakami Station followed by a local bus journey, but was worth the effort. Book half-board as the service and dinner is an experience in itself. The Onsen was in a fantastic setting, with...

Stayed here for 2 nights in a Japanese-style room. Absolutely loved it. Yes there are bears in a cage, which I don't agree with but everything else is wonderful. You won't regret it. The place is stunning, the hot pools themselves are beautiful and the food was incredible.

We had a fantastic time at this ryokan. Staff were very friendly, helped us with all the information we needed. Our room had a little window that opened onto the river, wonderful to sit and relax. Traditional rooms, very authentic - staff make up your futon whilst at dinner. Food was very traditional, Japanese for dinner and the option of japanese...

The outdoor onsen is really nice. the hotel is old but the rooms are very nice, looking to the river. You sleep with the sound of the river. Food is not as great as we expected but lots of courses to taste different japanese food. The staff is very friendly. We had a great experince there.

This onsen is truly beautiful, starting from the trip by the free shuttle from the station, which takes you deeper into the mountains over picturesque gorges with blue-green river running at the bottom. Then you arrive at the onsen and you're thinking 'this is it?' well don't get fooled by the look of the place from the parking lot, once...

Our trip to Japan couldn't be complete without a visit to a traditional Onsen (natural hot spring), and Takaragawa Onsen came as highly trusted recommendation from a friend, a vivid traveler and blogger, who claimed that was "the best" Onsen in Japan to be found. Now, having the opportunity to stay there I can most certainly atest to it as...

The onsen here is fantastic. We were there in March and it was snowing while we bathed. It was a fantastic setting. We even got to see snow monkeys while in the water. It is also a plus that the onsen is mixed gender. The food was good, but couldn't match the superb baths. I recommend spending a single night...

The number one attraction is the outdoor baths. They are spectacular. Do bring a can of beer or a thermos with cold sake to the baths, but do not bring any glass containers. Women are allowed to cover themselves up. Men typically do when they walk between the three pools too. In addition one bath for women only. The rooms...

Our stay at Takaragawa was unforgettable (for all the right reasons). This ryokan/onsen pitches traditional Japanese hospitality perfectly for Western travellers looking for something different to a typical hotel or guest house stay. Getting there from Tokyo was very easy. The directions on the hotel website are spot on and are very easy to follow. You can't go wrong -...
