The history of Kansyokan goes back to the Edo Period (17th?19th centuries). Having flourished as a spa retreat for the feudal lord of Tozawa-han (a feudal territory that is now Shinjo City), the Semi Onsen area retains much of the atmosphere of a traditional hot-spring town. You will be welcomed by seasonal changes in the surrounding mountains and the babbling of the crystal clear Oguni River, which you can hear from your room. From the moment you step through the door until the moment you depart, please relax and indulge your senses at Kansyokan.

We traveled from Shinjo and arrived in the evening in the middle of a snow storm, and was surprised with the spontaneous pick up from the Semionsen station. Trains were sparse at about once every 2 hours only, we were already prepared for the worst- to trot down to the hotel in the middle of the snow storm. So that saved us.

Food was excellent, the Kaiseki dinner was top notched, even the buffet breakfast was not for the light hearted.

I do understand that the facilities were a bit run down and would definitely require some refurbishment. Our room was very clean, so no complaints from us.

Is the place over priced? No if you consider the quality of the dinner.

The history of Kanshokan dates back to the Edo period. It is a large inn in Semi Onsen that flourished as the inner sanctum of the castle lord of Tozawa Domain (present-day Shinjo City).
We arrived a little early, but we were able to check in. It was a blessing that we were able to check in early, as we arrived in the heat of about 33 degrees Celsius.
The lobby lounge offers snacks and coffee, which you can use at any time (they also have tea, but no hot water, so you will have to take it and drink it in your room).
They also provide yukata (colored yukata for women), amenities such as toothbrushes, and small portions of lotion.
I chose a lustrous colored yukata that looked like a furisode, and it made me feel cheerful.
The room was along the clear Oguni River, and the view was beautiful. You could see the JR trains passing in the distance, so my wife looked out the window the whole time.
The beautiful room was spacious, with a 10-tatami Japanese-style room and a wide veranda with a sofa set.
The snacks in the room were small Japanese sweets like kintsuba, which went well with tea. The bath was a large public bath, and the open-air bath was big enough for several people. The hot spring smelled a little like sulfur.
There was an All-One in the washroom area.
Dinner was excellent. The sashimi was delicious bluefin tuna. The meat in the hot pot was pork and chicken in a tomato hotpot with a sour broth, so it was refreshing even in the summer.
The Yamagata Onsen roast beef was delicious.
The Funagatayama Masharoom Komiyaki had a slightly Western flavor with a garlic taste. The sweetfish in the lotion-grilled sweetfish had a crispy skin and plump, soft flesh. The steamed food had a shrimp flavor, and the soba noodles were herring soba noodles.
Rice, miso soup, wild yam, and pickles were served in a buffet style, but I didn't get to eat the rice. My partner said they had chicken rice, so I had chicken rice for rice.
The dessert was also sophisticated, with honey grain rusks and sorbet.
For alcohol, I ordered Hatsumagosho Ginjo sake (around 1,300 yen for 300cc), which had a refreshing taste and went down easily.
Breakfast was a buffet. In fact, I had received a paper introducing the breakfast and recommended items when dinner was about to finish the previous day, so I was looking forward to breakfast.
There were local products, and it was a pretty good buffet. I enjoyed a variety of things, such as a very thick boiled fern and shumai made with local pork.
After checking out and leaving the building, a staff member asked me if I wanted to take a commemorative photo by the board with the name of the inn and the date written on it.
I was able to take a nice commemorative photo wearing a flower hat or holding it in my hand. This kind of thoughtfulness is a nice service for customers.

This is the real McCoy! This place has been frequented by royalty, the Emperor himself, no less. It has an outdoor onsen pool as well as one inside if the weather is too rough. The breakfast was wonderful and the price wasn't as high as I expected. However, on the downside, try and find it in the first place! Our car's GPS sent us a good 10 mins drive away when we put in the address. The postcode was not use either, and Booking.com do not give out phone nos. Fortunately, a very kind local jumped in her car and guided us there. Thanks to all Mogami-Machi folk for making our stay so memorable.

Anyway, dinner was great. We were grateful for the in-room dining, and there was a wide selection of dishes, including local cuisine and Yamagata beef, all of which were delicious and satisfying.
Nakai-san is young, but he was cheerful and efficient, so we had a great time.
The open-air bath in the large communal bath was smaller than we expected.
Our room had a semi-open-air bath, so that may have been enough.
The amenities in the room were also plentiful, which was very appreciated. We were also surprised to find a Dyson hairdryer! We were so happy.
The building was old, but it was well-cleaned and we were able to relax with peace of mind.
We would definitely like to stay here again if we have the opportunity.

The food was amazing! The quality was high, including grilled sweetfish, tender roast beef, tomato-flavored hotpot, and bluefin tuna. You can eat both seasoned rice and grated yam rice. I couldn't finish it all. And above all, Nakai-san's attention to detail was very nice. The hot springs were also relaxing, of course. You could choose your yukata for free. They also lend out games and equipment for playing in the river. I was able to help myself to coffee and sweets, and I was able to spend a very relaxing time! I would definitely like to visit again in the winter, as Nakai-san recommended.

This hotel had its good days a long time ago. Walls, doors, doorsills show stains and much wear and tear. Carpets are heavily stained. Cleanliness is lacking. The spa is unremarkable. A very small outdoor bath overlooks a garden that would be nice if it were attended to. The meals are nice and staff mostly very friendly. The largest problem with this hotel is that it‘s totally overpriced. Seeing the effort that has gone into the good hotel website I felt mislead.
