No real complaints about this pension. Some may not like the public bathing facilities and shared restrooms. Others might think the five minute uphill walk each morning a bit too far. But if you are comfortable with these issues, then the cheaper price will be attractive. Breakfast was the usual Japanese fare. Both Japanese and western appetites catered for. Dinner is also available. The specialties being Japanese hot pot and sushi plates. The sushi was very good and the ¥4,000 platter should be enough for three people. Should mention the basement changing room/ski room. Very well equipped with the facilities to do minor maintenance, including waxing.

Operator does not speak English, but one of the workers (Momoko) did and she was very nice. Rooms are clean and futon blanket was very warm. Nice onsen in hotel and short walks (5-10 minutes) to ski lift, restaurants, bus. The best feature of hotel are the delicious free apples and the great sushi (best so far in Japan). Breakfast was also good and reasonable. We recommend this place.

My partner and I booked our 2 week stay at Resort In Toemu about 7 months in advance. To be honest our primary interest was price (so affordable!). When we arrived we were blown away at the charm and service of this place. The room was super cool with tatami and traditional matting. The hotel has its own onsen for those a little more shy/tired from snowsports to walk into town. It is run by the nicest old lady in the world. IN THE WORLD. Frankly she works insane h hours everyday and still manages to be super duper nice to everyone. I'll level with you. The floors are polished wood. People in rooms next to you may be loud. They might walk loudly past your room. This is a traditional hotel. It's just something you will deal with. My advice is do what you came to Nozawa to do, and snowboard/ski so hard that by the end of the day your exhaustion means you will sleep soundly. As far as location it is very convenient. In Nozawa you can either stay close to town or close to the resort, but not both. Toemu is right in between town and the Nagasaki station. In many ways this works best. In the morning it's 5-8mins stroll up to Nagasaki but you're fresh and its not far. In the evening you get a light walk downhill to the hotel and then into town. Everyone staying in Toemu was super easy going. We had no problems with the dry room or common spaces. Our host gave us a very useful map on our first day of all the food nearby in town and gave recommendations. I know some Westerners night be reticent about tatami. I found them a bit hard for the first 2 days but soon after became very happy to collapse into them. I don't know what the Toemu doonas are made from but I have a theory it's clouds and miracles because it's like sleeping in a warm hug dream machine. Ultimately if you're on a bit of budget and want a warm home-like environment this place is for you. I would and hopefully will stay here again if I can get back to Nozawa.

Clean cosy budget place, we loved our stay there. Our Japanese room with private toilet was spacious & Resort In Toemu provided sushi takeaways, shabu-shabu & Sukiyaki etc. Order 3 hours in advance for same day preparation. It's a lovely stay but feel the need to point these out to aid manage expectations: Wooden floors & thin doors meant you can hear loud walking along the walkway. I'm not heavy and at many times walked along the walkway unavoidably noisily to be greeted by my partner in the room that I sound like an elephant stomping outside. Rooms are not soundproofed, we could hear our neighbors yelling and washing up. I can also hear the vacuum cleaner very loudly when they do cleaning upon someone's check out. Room will not be cleaned during your stay - empty your own trash, beds will not be made, ask for new towels or they will not be changed. Rooms without washrooms will have to use the public washroom, only 2 cubicles and the smell wasn't very pleasant. Breakfast is a simple spread that costs 1000 yen per person per day. Coupon is the same for everyday and never once they checked us the week we were there. Western section has bread, toasters, butter & jam, coffee, tea, orange & apple juices, cereal. Japanese section has rice, miso soup & usually about 5-6 dishes of vegetables, egg (tamagoyaki), mushrooms, sausages. Each room has 2 doors and our second door got locked once, key did not work. There weren't anyone at the front desk so we had to come up with our own solution. We ended up using a card to slide against the door (like what you see in the ancient shows) and weren't sure if we were supposed to be happy or disappointed when it worked - the door opened that way. There was no safe in our room, take your valuables with you. Our room came with private toilet but we had to use the public bath for showers. This works the same as the public bath in a ryokan, getting naked & sitting alongside other people. The pool was right beside the showers at the same place. I have a huge tattoo on my back and was told that I cannot use the onsen - but showers are OK. There isn't always someone at reception, try your luck pressing the bell. There is a basket of apples right at reception that's free - they're extremely sweet & juicy! We loved the fragrant green tea at the lobby so much we bought several packs from the inn lady who was happy to spare us some. Bought that at 1300 yen each, 100 green tea bags per pack. Short walk upslope to the Nagasaka ski lifts/ gondola. Nice place to stay near the middle of the village when on a budget and to meet new friends. We used Google maps so this place was easy to find. If you are too, key in 9702 Toyosato Nozawaonsen.

Nozawa Onsen was my favorite place that we stayed during our 2 week holiday to Japan. Its a cute little onsen town where everything is within a 15 minute walk away. The staff and guests we met a Resort in Toemu were very friendly. Only one staff that we met spoke English well, but the owners were very trusting and kind. It was our first time sleeping on the Japanese bedding which was fun and not as uncomfortable as I was expecting. We had a large room with windows. It had a great heater. About a 5-10 minute walk up to one of the two main gondolas. Breakfast was not included which would have been nice. We did pay for breakfast a couple of times though and found it satisfying. It is a mix of japanese and western foods. Free tea and coffee in the hotel lobby, which was a nice communal area that you could speak with other guests. Many free onsens located within a 10 minute walk, however the hotel has its own onsen which was good for when you couldn't be bothered leaving the hotel to wash. The drying room and workshop area downstairs was good. Coin operated washing machine a plus. I really loved this place and would stay again if we are luckily enough to return to Nozawa. If you are after a swanky hotel however this place probably isn't for you.
