Kawamotya just re-opened earlier this year after an extensive renovation. The apartments are very modern and have a lovely Japanese touch. The location is great, in a quiet corner of the village, but just next to one of the most popular hot springs and no more than 5 min walk from the village center. We enjoyed using the gym in the basement and to watch the sunset on the rooftop terrace. In the lobby there is a nice Cafe called Harding's that offers a breakfast menu and they also make delicious pastries and the best apple cake in town.

It was great spending time in Nozawa Onsen during the green season when the pace is slower. So nice to sleep with open window and feel the mountain breeze. We can also hear the water flowing around the house. It does not get more relaxing than this!

If you want to experience traditional Japanese accommodation, this hotel is the one. The floors are covered with tatami and you sleep on futons on the floor. You do have a basic bathroom with bath and shower, and there is an onset right next door for those who want the full Japanese experience. The breakfasts are delicious with variations every day. The staff are friendly, knowledgable and attentive.

This was my first experience in Japan, in Feb 2014, and the Kawamotoya was great. The service was excellent, the food was great. We had breakfast every morning for the week we were there and we did have one dinner at the Tamon restaurant which was exquisite. It was a little expensive but absolutely worth it, even for one who isn't keen on Japanese food. The equivalent in Australia would cost 3 times as much. I wasn't too keen on the walk up the hill I had read about but it was not a problem at all and nice to walk through the village up to the U Road, the moving walkway. We had a room on the top floor which had lovely views. The hotel onsen was well used by us and I wish I had bought one of the kimono type robes provided by the ryokan each day. I would definitely stay there again. Staff were great, including the 3 Australian waitresses!

We were meant to stay here for 9 nights, but actually only stayed for 8. We booked 6 nights through Expedia (it was cheaper than booking direct) and 3 nights direct with the hotel. If you do decide to go here, check Expedia first as the Cancellation Policy and the extremely insecure payment method with Nozawa Hospitality direct had us a little concerned!

ROOM
We booked a Deluxe Room with deep soaking bath, sink and toilet, as we didn't fancy public showering/bathing every time. We were in Room 501 on the fifth floor and after our 12 hour flight and 5 hour Train/Bus journey what we really wanted was a shower and to freshen up. This was not to be, and remained like this throughout our stay, it wasn't lack of pressure of water, the shower would start and then there would be no water whatsoever, we timed it once and it was 8 minutes with no water coming out at all, not pleasant with your hair full of shampoo etc., The response from reception was, "someone else must be having a shower"!! So we paid extra for this facility that quite clearly is a recurring problem with the hotel.
The room itself was very pleasant though, plenty of space, a water boiler so you could make a drink, a safe and TV, I didn't switch the TV on, so have no idea on channels. We piled up the futons and basically made ourselves a nest to sleep in, I loved it, Hubby wasn't as keen. The cleaning routine appeared sporadic, but the room stayed pretty clean throughout the stay. The provided nice little onsen bags and robes for during your stay, which was a great plus. Lastly, the Wi-Fi was extremely reliable, no issues whatsoever.

BREAKFAST
Breakfast was included and we thought there were great choices, it was very similar most days, and if you weren't down early some of the less popular items had cooled a little, but it was a mix of east and west every day with good hot and cold choices. Eggs, bacon, usually a risotto, bread, jams, cereal, fresh fruit and salad, miso soup and much more. The French guy who runs things was excellent and we really noticed a difference when he had a day off.

LOCATION
If you've read previous reviews, you'll perhaps be as confused as we were before our stay as to what the distance is to the lifts! As the hotel is at the bottom of the village, it is not as convenient as the majority of other hotels we saw. Hikage Gondola Station is a good 15 minute uphill hike. There is also a twin town chairlift that takes you near to the Hikage Station that is probably a 7/8 minute (again all uphill and partly on snow) walk. When we checked in these were the only ways mentioned to get to the lifts, fortunately I had read a different property review that had mentioned the free shuttle bus to the Nagasaka Gondola, some people we spoke to whilst there had no idea this was an option, so poor communication by the hotel really. The shuttle bus only involves you walking up one (4/5 mins) hill to the Chuo Terminal, it ran roughly every 20 minutes and was great. Don't get the wrong impression, we don't mind walking, but I'd emailed the hotel beforehand to ask about locker/storage facilities for our snowboards/boots etc., that was near to the lifts, we were assured there were locker facilities at the Nagasaka Gondola - I'll attach a photo of said facilities and you'll see why the bus became the preferred option instead of walking with our snowboards each way everyday. It was literally a metal grip holder for your board, and whilst it did lock, it certainly wasn't a locker. We (much) later found out your could leave your gear at Haus St. Anton for 100 yen per person per day, so I'd thoroughly recommend anyone does that, as the walk up in the morning is much better without all your gear. It also enables you to enjoy the wander back down, have a drink etc., without all your gear. Again really poor information from the hotel, that at the end of the day is catering for Skiers/Boarders. If they had shared this information perhaps I wouldn't have had the catastrophe that I had (more info later!)
The hotel is reasonably close (uphill all the way again) to many restaurants, so that was a positive.

ONSEN
They have there own in house Onsen, which was lovely, and once you got over the getting naked and washing in front of everyone, was a wonderful facility. However, going back to the no water pressure issue and the fact a lot of the rooms do not have a shower (working or not) There is a major flaw in the fact if you have booked a room without a shower, you have to use the Onsen facility and there are literally 2 shower heads available, so if you want a shower before you leave in the morning and after you're back, then be prepared to wait, because everyone else wants one too. And as mentioned, absolutely no privacy whatsoever.

So why did we leave early? Well, they do have ski/snowboard storage in the basement, which due to seeing what the Nagasaka "lockers" actually were meant we brought all our gear back with us to put in the hotel storage after our first day out. There was, what can only be described as a very large metal cabinet to be used as a drying area (I'll attach a pic) I put my boots in there and the next day they were ruined. I have no idea what the temperature got up to in there, but it ruined the custom footbeds in my snowboard boots. Too cut a very long story short, after visiting every hire shop in Nozawa and no suitable boots being found so I could continue boarding (I am a UK size 7 and the reason I have moulded footbeds is due to my heels being very narrow) I spoke to reception and emailed the Sales Director of Nozawa Hospitality to see if they could tell me if there were any shops in Nagano that sold Salomon or Burton snowboard boots so I could buy some more. They did offer to take me to IIyama as there was a big sports shops there, it appeared they were being very helpful, but apparently there were no boots in my size there. Imagine my disgust, when having decided to leave a day early after having only one full day snowboarding, we caught the direct bus to Nagano and actually passed 2 Burton Snowboard shops on the way into Nagano. I had obviously googled various phrases to try and find out for myself but had returned no legible results. So my £230 snowboard boots were ruined, we lost the £130 we had paid for the room that night, and it cost us a further £180 for an extra night in Tokyo. We didn't ask for any form of compensation/refund, but nothing was offered either. I also suggested they put a note in English on the cabinet to warn anyone else that Custom moulded liners may be affected, but nothing was added before we left.

I haven't actually taken the above incident into account when rating the Kawamotoya, if this hadn't had happened it would have still been a 3 due to location, communication and most importantly lack of reliable water to have the shower that we paid extra for, that they obviously know is an issue and keep charging extra for! We still had a wonderful time in Nozawa, it's just there wasn't enough to do if you couldn't ski/board.

Lastly, they will Ta-q-ubin your bags direct from the hotel to the Airport, so that was a great facility, it was approx 4500 yen for 2 snowboard bags, but you do need at least 48 hours. All the staff in the hotel were extremely pleasant and polite and this seems to sum up Japan as a Country.

Would I go back to Nozawa Onsen - absolutely, just as soon as I've forked out for another pair of snowboard boots!

This is my second review for Kawamotoya. We had a great experience when we stayed three years ago and thought we'll come back again. This time round, the rooms are still the same - spacious and comfortable, there's still a relatively good onsen and yukatas (robes) are still provided.

However a few things stood out as different - the daily cleaning of the rooms were really sub-par, sometimes we don't even know if it has been cleaned, until we see the bins have been emptied. The cleaning staff would leave their supplies strewn along the corridors, vacuum cleaner and their cords lying haphazardly around.

The onsen gift bag that was given to us at check in used to have shampoo, shower gel etc so we can go the other onsens outside of the hotel but this time, you only get a tiny bar of hard soap.

The breakfast was the most disappointing. There used to be a good spread of Japanese/Western breakfast options such as grilled fish, onsen eggs, miso, rice along with fruit, salad, yogurt sausages, bread etc, now there's only a small selection of western dishes. We even paid for a good breakfast at a nearby ryokan on the last day because we wanted to leave with a good breakfast.

The ski storage room used to be warmed up daily but now we only had it warmed up once in the week we were there. When we checked out previously, we were sent off with a gift of warm bread for our journey. Not any more. These are rather small things but for the same price we paid (pricey) we kinda expected at least the same service and benefits.

I stayed here with my partner and 13 other friends for an 8 day ski trip.
Staff- are very friendly and helpful. Although... There was one Aussie waitress who had a terrible cough and lo and behold 10 out of the 15 of us developed a terrible cough.
Location- probably as far down the hill from the slopes as you could get! It's about a 15 minute walk uphill to get to either the moving walkway or the chair that will take you to the gondola, terrible.
Rooms- sleeping on old thin mattresses on the floor was a novelty at first, but soon wore off with bad backs, stiff necks and aching hips ( not good after a day skiing).
Our 'beds' were also placed under the window which resulted in a very cold draft around our heads! The rooms were dusty and the mat flooring collected dirt, dust and hair which clung to our socks making them filthy. The shower was terrible with no pressure and not very hot. The Onsen in the hotel had great showers but the Onsen was a very mild temperature and nothing like the very hot Onsen's nearby.
Breakfast and dinner were good considering we were all to sick to go anywhere else.
All in all I would not recommend this hotel. I'm sure there are better ones closer to the slopes.
Check out NozawaOne. That would be the ultimate accommodation!

We just returned from our trip to Japan. We decided to go out of the main city of Tyoko and wentt to a small place in Nozawa, called, kawamotoya. Some friends of our stayed there last year and highly recommended it, so we thought we would give it a try. It was great.

The place we stayed at called Kawamotoya, a traditional ryokan located in the town of Nozawa. We had never stayed at a Ryokan before. It was an experience! After we checked in, we went up to the room. We were a little suprised to find that there were no beds in the room, just a table with some small chairs on the floor. After we dropped off our luggage, we went downstairs to find our bed. The lady at the reception was very patient and kind. She informed us that our bed would be made up when we returned fron dinner. So, we went out to a local Sushi restaurant and had dinner. When we returned to our rooms, the beds were made up. At first, i was not sure i would be abe to sleep on the fulton, so close to the floor. But it was quite comfortable and a very pleasant expperience. And the restaurant downstairs, Tamon, has some of the best food we ate in Japan. The waitress was very nice and tried to help us with our Japanese.

And Nozawa, the town, is a very nice place. There are a number of stores around the town that sell the local products (Jellies, Jams, Sake, fresh fruits). And you will always see people walking to and from the public baths wearing Yukata, a traditional robe used in Japan. You can tell which Ryokan the people are staying at by the Yukata they are wearing . And you have to try the onsens. There are 13 public baths in the town. They are the perfect way to relax and unwind.

So it was great experience. I would highly recommend a trip to Nozawa. It as a little out of the way (3 1/2 hours by train from Toyko)) but well worth the trip.

It has been 2 months since arriving home from our skiing trip in Nozawa Onsen yet the memories are still fresh in our minds as are the names and faces of the lovely staff we met whilst staying at Kawamotoya (KT).
We had a few options for accommodation in Nozawa but decided in KT as they had just undergone a renovation in Dec 2011.  The prices were very reasonable as compared to other properties and inclusive of breakfast - which is quite common in Japanese ryokans / hotels.
KT is a ryokan which is a traditional Japanese hotel with tatami mats and futons as beds - the futons are thin but there is a plentiful supply so we just stacked ours high and created comfy pillow tops - our bodies thanked us after a day of skiing. KT has a communal Onsen for bathing, yes that's right, you separate male and female, but that didn't worry us as we were the only guests in the lodge for the week days. The weekend (sat night) are the busiest with locals travelling fromTokyo for their ski weekend.
The best part of our day (apart from the skiing and huge amounts of snow) was coming home to that hot hot hot Onsen and soaking the tired muscles.

The staff and their friendliness made this trip the most memorable. Nari Kwan, Misoey and the management went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay - this became most evident when at the breakfast table. We were able to choose from a western or Japanese breakfast the night before and request the time we would time to eat it. I alternated between the western and Japanese and it was nice to have variety. The western breakfast, very loosely termed at that, consisted of eggs, salad (yep salad), potato wedges (freshly made), a tasty fruit salad with home made yoghurt and a plentiful supply of fresh juice and coffee. They were very keen on getting our feedback on each dish which, I suspect, was due to a new chef they had employed to coincide with their refurbishment. We did suggest that most western breakfasts have bread and our requests were met in that they brought us English muffins and freshly backed breads without request for the rest of our stay (6 nights).
The japaneses breakfast consisted of fish, rice, miso soup and an Onsen cooked egg. ( my fave to mix in with rice). And the acquired taste Natto - fermented bean curd - I dare you to try it.

KT was only s short walk up the hill to the carpet and I really would have no hesitation on going back there. There is a lot of choice in Nozawa but if you want a memorable traditional Japanese ryokan experience that has a modern a tasteful edge then definitely stay here.
I hole the powder is as good for you as it was for us! Oh and make sure you see the snow monkeys.

This was a lovely traditional hotel. Staff wonderful and spoke good English. Next door to an Onsen (all 13 Onsens in the town are free) and the restaurant just next door was fantastic. Was a walk up hill to ski areas although you can leave skis in locker near gondola. Many great restaurants scattered through the village

After being told of a booking error made by our travel agent, Miki on the front desk went out of her way to contact the agent to try to remediate the problem. She was always smiling and greeted us each time we passed.
The room was large and comfy, ample storage in the dry room and a short walk to bars and restaurants.
Would definitely stay here again.

Hi Julie ... in the case of Kawamotoya you can either book rooms with private bathroom facilities or rooms that rely on the shared bathroom which is basically a typical onsen setup. Google "onsen" and you'll get an idea. The motel give you a personal onsen pack on arrival. Basically in each of the single sex facilities there is a washing area (the men's had two wooden seats under shower heads.) Once washed you then hop into the hot tub. Fantastic after a days skiing. I note Kawamotoya have been refurbishing their onsen this summer. My wife wasn't keen on the idea so we had room on the 5th floor with bath facilities. I used both. Hope this helps.

How do we get there? We'll need directions
Answer from POD521
Albury, Australia551 contributions181 helpful votes
It's only a short walk from the bus station even with suitcases in tow. There are a couple of ways to get the Kawamotoya so what I'd suggest is to simply pop into the friendly information centre opposite the bus station and ask for directions. The town map is easy to navigate with and they'll direct you along the main street then a turn left down hill. Kawamotoya is next door to the excellent Akebi Tei Okonomiyaki.
