Detailed Reviews
We got the delux room in the main building. The space was divided nicely to accommodate 4 people and having the living area with seating was nice and spacious.
The good: English speaking front desk that is open 24 hours, Dry room for gear, coffee/tea available in main lobby, microwave and coin laundry available downstairs. The front desk will readily assist with arranging a taxi or luggage transport service. The hotel was easily recognized by taxi drivers so there was never a need to provide directions.
The so-so: Our room didn’t have enough outlets so we kept unplugging the floor lamps when the overhead lights were too dark on their own; price was too high compared to other accommodations; Some staff appear to be hired for their English speaking abilities and not trained on knowledge about all the things hotels are asked to arrange.
Overall a pleasant experience but expensive for what you get.

My wife and I visited Japan for the first time last week, using the Shakespeare Hotel as a base for a week of skiing in the wonderful Hakuba area.
The hotel itself is an affordable, simple place with everything you need to have a very comfortable stay. The rooms are quaintly named after one of the many Shakespeare plays (we stayed in The Twelfth Night!) and have comfy twin beds, a sofa, fridge, and a nice clean ensuite bathroom. They also have temperature selectable heating which is great for drying out the ski clothes after enjoying the epic powder skiing. The hotel itself also has a communal lounge area with free wifi, a dry room for your ski/board equipment, and a games room/meeting area. One of the great benefits was the inclusion of daily tickets to the local Onsen. You have to try this as it is a wonderful experience, and there is no better way to relax after a full day on the slopes.
Breakfast was included in our deal, and we were treated to a lovely western style breakfast at our selected time each morning. We also tried the Japanese breakfast too which was great. The staff are more than happy for your to choose which one you want each day. They have an onsite restaurant but it seemed like this was only for people staying half board.
The location is second to none. The buses that efficiently link all of the Hakuba resorts stop directly outside the hotel, and the staff are constantly at hand to provide you with the times and directions for where you want to go. The Echoland area is supposedly the party centre of Hakuba, but is infact very quiet when compared to any European resort we have been to. The restaurants within walking distance are plentiful, good quality, and generally very good value. On most evenings we managed to eat for 2,000 - 5,000 yen for two people, especially if you can stick to one drink (drinks are pretty expensive).
We would definately return to this hotel, and it would be a pleasure to see the incredibly kind and helpful staff again. It is by no means a luxury facility, but it has everything you need as a base for a ski holiday, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay!

Stayed at Shakespeare couple of times (mainly because they have a shuttle bus stop right in front of the hotel and a ton of diners and bars within walking distance)....
Couple of better points compared to last time. It seems like bus terminal hub will be situated in front of Spicy Rental which is a 10 second walk to Shakespeare... so access is even better now.
They renovated the rooms (in the main building).. seems like the beds are softer and bigger. it was still under construction but they are building a yoga studio which is pretty cool especially for long stays... perhaps a day of Yoga is nice.
Definitely more billingual and perhaps local Hakuba staff working at the hotel this time around. Staff members are super nice.

For the price paid (SGD320 per night), it was definitely not worth the stay. It was more like an inn than a hotel. I could have stayed at a better one nearby if I knew this was the type of room I am getting.
Reviews were good online and it was just a 3 mins walk from where our friend's accommodation were, that's why we decided to book this place. Nothing, but regrets.
The bed were so bad we could feel the coil spring, my husband and I ended up sharing 1 of the twin bed that were combined together. The room was so dusty that i developed very bad rashes. I went to the reception and showed them the conditions and they didn't even bother to offer to change my room. PS: They knew we were there for our honeymoon.
Requested for cleaning and changed of sheets but it was not done as I purposely marked it so that I will know if the sheet was changed. Feedback to the reception and they came up to the room to change the sheets and vacuum the room.
I gave this one star for the help they rendered before I got this hotel booked and i appreciated it.
I would not recommend anyone to stay at this hotel, because, for the price, you can stay at a better one nearby.

I would list this as 3 1/2. The stay overall was good, they have a laundry room, and it was close enough to some restaurants and other amenities, yet it seemed a bit far away from the actual resorts. The bus system took a while so it felt like the powder days weren't taken full advantage of. Overall I think it's a pretty good place to stay if you can't find a similar hotel closer to the resorts.

I am just back from a ski trip to Hakuba Japan. I booked it very last minute to catch a incoming set of storms.
The front desk personnel were extremely helpful and took care of anything asked.
And I put them to the test.
They arranged a taxi service to pick me up in Nagano from the bullet train. The driver had a sign with my name just at the exiting turnstyle. Perfect.
I arrived very early to the hotel and while my room was not ready I was able to change and get out to some of the worlds best powder.
I brought all my gear except skis. Which they arranged and had the Rhythm ski shop come pick me up and they set me up with brand new K2 powder skis. PERFECT.
I went back to the room after a great day
And found my bags in my room no issues. PERFECT.
The next morning it was snowing hard and 18-24 inches over night left me without transportation to Hakuba47 my choice of ski resort for that day.
After a exhausting search there were no taxis available for hours. Then the front desk clerk put on his coat and said, I will take you. PERFECT!
Now this is not Vail or Aspen. It is Hakuba Japan.
The hotel is not ski in or out. In fact I did not see one hotel/lodge on par with what is in the states.
Its just an average hotel, miles from the mountain but run by great people doing there best to make people happy.
And they did!
PERFECT.

Really nice experience. All staff was very serviceminded. Nice hotel. The bus to all slopes stopped outside the door. The only downside was that the breakfast was traditional japansese with some odd dishes. Otherwise highly recommended

We have just returned from a skiing holiday in Hakuba. What a great place to ski! So much variety. We were happy at Happo One - wide runs, range of levels, lots of chair lifts and no queues. We stayed at the Shakespeare Hotel, which is in a great location in Echo Land, the free shuttle bus arrives outside the hotel to transport you to whatever resort you want to ski, and there are numerous restaurants on the same street. We ski all day so what we want from our accommodation is a good drying room, a laundry, a bedroom with a bit of space, a good bed/warm bedding, hot shower and a warm room. The Shakespeare Hotel has all of that - as well as communal sitting areas and a good hearty Japanese breakfast included in the deal. We are not concerned about two single beds being pushed together to make a double, the quality of the carpet, size of the bath or stains on the light shades. Probably the highlight was the staff. They picked us up from the bus terminal on arrival (free of charge and not previously arranged), carried all our bags upstairs, explained what was what, and greeted us in Japanese each morning at breakfast and on our return from the slopes. On the last day they again transported us back to the terminal free of charge. Great hotel. Not for those who like luxurious pampering and a pristine environment but a comfortable hotel with a great breakfast at a good price.

Stayed there for 7 nights mid January with friends. The room was very spacious and the staff were fantastic. Great English speakers. They drove us to the chair lifts in the morning and drove us to the train station. If they were to busy to drive, they booked a taxi for you. They called restaurants and booked dinner for us. They had excellent knowledge of the mountain and day trips. They were more than happy to ring tour companies for availability and book a tour for you.

Although it would have been more appropriate to be in The Winter's Tale, we were happy with The Sonnets, a cosy double room with a two-seater sofa, a small dressing-table and a decent sized bathroom with lashings of hot water. The room also had a pleasant view out over the courtyard and the mountains beyond do that we could get an early gauge of the weather conditions, and the bed was comfortable.
Staff are extremely helpful, both the younger and the older Japanese gents and the young girl from Edinburgh were friendly and obliging no matter what the request, and the young servers and greeters in the breakfast room were unfailingly charming.
As well as a decent room and friendly service, there is a good selection at breakfast (included in our rate) with different items appearing on the buffet each day and our deal also included complimentary access to a nearby onsen (hot spring bath) with towels available from reception. there is a drying room with lockers for skis, poles and boots so you can keep your gear safe (free of charge).
The hotel picked us up from the Happo bus station on the afternoon we arrived, but were too busy to drop us off on the morning of our departure, but called a taxi which came promptly and was 1,000 yen to the bus station.
The location is excellent for the bars and restaurants of Echoland and for taking a night bus to and from Happo Village, which is also well worth checking out in the evenings. it can be a bit of a bind waiting for the free ski bus in the mornings, especially to the Happo-One ski area, but this is more a fault of the local transport system than the hotel itself. In any event, there was some waiting, but we always got on a bus there and back in the end. Buses to Goryu are a bit easier. You could walk to Happo-One - easier for boarders than skiers - but you might not fancy the walk back after a long day's face-planting.
Some have commented that the hotel is a bit worn at the edges. Perhaps it could do with a minor makeover, but it has plenty of charm and if you have The Sonnets room you will be happy.
If I could give the Shakespeare four and a half stars I would. It is good value, well-located and friendly. But as we had such a great time in Hakuba, I am bumping it up to five stars.
