We stayed at Lamp no Yado for the main purpose of viewing Sea of Clouds at Tsubetsu, as its location is closest to the Observation Site. We had a pleasant stay at Lamp no Yado. We stayed at a Low season in mid October. Pros 1) Close location to Sea of Clouds where we paid for a tour guide to take us to see the Sea of Clouds at 6am. It was truly beautiful as we had a clear sky that day. 2) Dining at Lamp no Yado is truly an experience. Noticed they were awarded Michelin status. 3) Quiet and tranquil stay. 4) Onsen to ourselves as it was Low Season. 5) Staff friendly and helpful. Cons 1) Room out-dated. 2) Beds were hard, had to request for a small mattress. Basically, our trip to Lamp no Yado is memorable. Will stay again if we visit the Sea of Clouds at Tsubetsu.

This was more than a stay. It was an experience. We drove for a while from the town of Tsubetsu till we reached the end of the road and there was the hotel! Very much on its own with nothing else around, it felt like a true escape. Luckily it was Japan though so we felt very safe being so isolated. The hotel is very low-key yet so comfy. We chose a large room with a nice view of the stream. The dinners and breakfasts were superb. Lots of details and tasty! Next time we will leave more time for the trails behind/ around the hotel. We only hiked for 30 mins but we would have loved to hike more. Just so pleasant. The road from Lake Kussharo was still closed the day we arrived. I think they still had some hazard somewhere on the road and they had to wait till it was very safe before reopening it. I suspect the road is closed for many months during the year so if you are coming from Lake Kussharo, refer to the update on the hotel website the day you arrive. Return probability = 100%

Some staff can speak English very well, I can recommend for foreign guests.

Thanks to chef and staff, we got a great diner and nice service. A creek flows by the hotel and surrounding woods make it great to stay and walk around. Clean and comfortable room helps us to relax.

If you are looking to experience Hokkaido naïve nature, this is the perfect accommodation nested in lush forest, close to mountains. The drive to the property is beautiful through Hokkaido farms, and it is also close to lakes. It is close to the observatory where you can watch sunrise and sunset overlooking the lake, as well as sea cloud depending on weather conditions. The ryokan has spaceous Japanese style and Western style guestrooms, with natural onsen, great for relaxing after a day at the outdoor. The property itself is in the forest with a beautiful landscape, so it is healing to hang out in the ryokan and relax with quiet reading too. Recommended to stay at least 3 days to relax and explore the area. There is English speaking staff at front-desk and in the restaurant, they are very warm and friendly to make you feel right at home.
